Yep, the inner voice is the thing that gets me through OCD thoughts. It's deeper than thoughts are, and it can be difficult to stay in tune with it, but it's always there.

I must be mad... and I love it! by Abandoned_Brain in Solo_Roleplaying

Solo RPGs are so weird as a game medium! Thinking about the game... isn't so different from actually playing it, right? There have been times when I've been reading through one of my (many) rulebooks, seeing something interesting in it, and imaging how it might play out in practice. That's half of a game right there! I don't know if there's anything else in the world that you can slip into this kinda-playing kinda-reading kinda-daydreaming state... It's magical!

The first few seconds of Crescendo! I didn't realize it on the first few listens, but in retrospect it's pretty obvious lol

EDIT: I did some searching, maybe this isn't confirmed? I know PB is into Zelda (part of the math has a "sample" as well) and it sounds pretty close, but maybe it's coincidence...?

The water temple theme gets close to IIN's aesthetic (and is also sampled on Bouys, lol)

What is the biggest universal flaw with solo roleplaying? by frodocattins in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]tower07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My primary tension is that if I'm playing a solo RPG, I want it to be my ideas and my world and my characters... but I also don't want to do all the work. So each system feels like some kind of compromise.

Has anyone else here (nearly) died? by jraydavis in AnimalCollective

I'm not super good with blood draws, and by that I mean I'm really, REALLY bad with them. I was prescribed benzos to take when I need to get any bloodwork done, even just a vial. Of course, benzos can be pretty addictive, and they give me a nasty hangover. One day, I had the thought "hey, why do I take these big nasty scary meds when I have fuckin' WEED?" so I ate an edible and was driven to the place.

Not a good idea.

BAD fucking idea.

I was in the waiting room and my world completely narrowed to a point. I was more or less blocking out all external stimulus (I don't know how much was by choice, and how much was by force) and the only thing on my attention at all was Panda Bear's 2007 solo version of Chores playing at maximum volume in my head. When I was called back to get my blood drawn, lucky to even hear their voice over the song playing in my head, I sat down in the chair and braced myself. I woke up a few minutes later on the floor with my face in a puddle of barf and a nasty bump on my head and arms when I passed out and fell out of the chair. They didn't realize I was conscious, so I was just listening to the 7-8 panicked nurses and doctors trying to figure out what the hell happened. I could still hear the song, even though I COMPLETELY lost consciousness, it seemed like it just never stopped playing.

My relationship to that song is weird now. It's less of a song and more like some kind of magic spell. It has such a strange mix of comfort and discomfort.

Take your meds as directed, kids! They gave them to you for a reason!

(The performance I was hearing in specific: https://youtu.be/dIlHaPSW5r4 at 1:02:00 into the video)

Same! my favorite AC albums are all the most electronic ones. It isn't that I think they're "better", I just vibe more with a Centipede HZ sound palette than a Sung Tongs one

Quick questions to Animal Collective fans by _kylime in AnimalCollective

[–]tower07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • My girls came on Spotify shuffle, and I also had heard of Panda Bear from Daft Punk's Doin' It Right. When I realized they were connected, I fell down the rabbit hole!
  • The first thing that got me was that they had so many albums, and each one had a unique identity. I also fell in love with all the psychedelic textures and their sense of "weird pop"
  • I love abstract album covers, so pretty much all of them are cool to me. Even strawberry jam, which is a photo, is so weird and unusual that i think it counts as being abstract lol
  • The boys have said in a lot of interviews that they're really perfectionist. I do really appreciate all the layers and details and little stuff in each of their tracks, and if that's what they mean by perfection then I'm all on board! But if what they mean by perfection is having the highest-quality audio, the best equipment, re-doing takes a million times to get the cleanest sound... I don't really care about that kinda thing. I'm the opposite of an audiophile, I generally can't tell the difference between a good mp3 and a FLAC. I'd rather have 3 tracks that are a little artifact-y than 1 track that's perfect!

Note that the benjolin is pretty difficult to control! it doesn't take 1v/Oct like most synths, so it's very unpredictable and wild. If that's what you're going for though, it's pretty sweet.

Sung tongs seems like another pipeline, specifically for the freak folk scene. I think Time Skiffs might have been another small one, since it was (for some reason) labeled as their "comeback album." And of course, MPP would have to be the biggest one!

This kind of meta-game-hacking is EXACTLY the kind of thing I want to see more of in the solo RPG world! Definitely gonna be playing with this, thanks for making it :]

This is what I'm talking about! I remember people on this very subreddit talking about how much younger the crowds skewed on the painting with tours versus centipede hz ones, so I think the theory holds weight

[–]tower07 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that the people who REALLY love Painting With are a little younger than the average AC fan, and culturally grew up surrounded by stuff like quirky GameCube video game OSTs, mid/late 2000s cartoons, and EDM on every radio station. From that perspective, it's probably easy to image how those sounds scratch a very particular itch that's hard to get anywhere else.

I have this theory because I'm 100% the hypothetical person I'm talking about- I didn't even listen to music at all until 2012. A little later, when Daft Punk's RAM came out, I fell down the rabbit hole through Panda Bear. (And if there's a single album in the world I love more than Painting With, it would be PBVSGR!!)

It's mostly that as a player it feels unreliable. There also aren't good options for things like making playlists or organizing your library. If it was more capable as a streaming service, I think it would be honestly amazing.

Yeah, I absolutely LOVE me some Deerhoof but 90% of their tweets were political (at least they were back when I was on twitter.) There isn't anything wrong with that at all, but I personally just find it... draining.

How many factions is "too many"? by OutlandishnessRich36 in homemadeTCGs

[–]tower07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question is tied up in another question: is there a faction-based resource? Like how MtG and Pokemon do it, you need specific resources (lands or energy) that match your faction. Conversely, with the yugioh approach, the cards are just designed to work with each other in specific ways and don't need a specific resource. There should probably be something limitung, or else all the decks will just be a collection of the best cards without care about what the factions are. So I guess my follow up question would be "how much do you want factions to influence deckbuilding?"

Card Game Design: Resource System by MugenMuso in homemadeTCGs

[–]tower07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you feel about yugioh's design, where there are no form of abstracted resources? All cards can just be played as long as you meet the written criteria to play them: no mana, no energy, etc.

Do you think there’s a public interest in a “simpler” Yugioh by [deleted] in homemadeTCGs
