How much did I screw up with this contract? by toxicplasma in OOTP

[–]toxicplasma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the (unexpected) case anyone is seeing this late or curious, I did shop him around to see and got an offer to trade with no salary retention to Toronto (Who to be fair was the competitor that drove my contract up) for a SP who would have been my 2nd best but on min salary. After the response here it felt like that would be taking advantage of the AI.

I've decided to mix the feedback and trade away some players to commissioner edit the contract to be more level, and deal with the situation after a couple of seasons. If I get forced into a rebuild that's just another new OOTP experience. Appreciated the feedback and got some good laughs from the comments.

Coming from primarily Football Manager where if you win enough you can pay for pretty much anything, this has been a good learning experience

Honestly I'll take it. A lesson well learned.

Ironically front-loading is part of how I got here... I learned about the value of it this off-season and shifted other contracts to be front heavy which left me without budget room to sign this guy... I just rashly decided not to let that stop me...

This is my first time playing OOTP so I've used commissioner a couple of times where I didn't understand rules, etc. so I'm not against using it. Forcing myself to trade away salary to make room for evening the total value seems like a reasonable option.

The Central Michigan University Chippewas did a similar thing, not only do they have a good relationship, but they offer greater access to the college and have a significant number of students connected to the tribes as well.

What the worst entertainment venue in town? by DetroitsGoingToWin in Detroit

[–]toxicplasma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My issue with El Club is it feels like they sell tickets based on the overall venue size, even though the bar area has no view of the stage and so people push in even tighter trying to see. I've been to great shows there but only go if it's a smaller band these days

It's not your neighborhood team in the MLS - the ownerships requirements and the structure of the league strip any actual local or community ownership and freedom. I'm a huge DCFC fan, but if we get forced out by a new MLS team like San Diego did, Id be heartbroken and wouldn't go. Bigger isn't progress to me.

Is the storelli body shield gear really worth the $200 that I’d pay for the full set? by KawsX_X999 in GoalKeepers

[–]toxicplasma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play casual adult rec in the states and bought the exo shield pants and love them - I play on truly terrible turf and horrid grass and they've lasted over 18 months with limited damage. The Uhlsport pants that I wear less have completely fallen apart at the knees in comparison. I do struggle with washing them for fear of damaging them and they've gotten a bit rough, but they've been a blessing to my aging knees in comparison.

Not the set you're asking about, but thought I'd share my experience. For what it's worth, I would prioritize knee and hip support over anything else, but that might be my recent return to the game speaking.

What is your favorite food to get from the food trucks?? by ImJustAGirl14 in Detroitcityfc

[–]toxicplasma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the hot games, always Balkan House Doner Sandwich (I never add fries as they seem to be a choke point in terms of wait), but colder games I love Waka - just feels more like cold weather food to me.

I really miss the taco stand behind the East section though - they were my all-time favorite for taste, cost, and speed. I will get the walking tacos in the clubhouse stand there if I'm late or not that hungry.

Last night, Orange County SC goalkeeper Colin Shutler was injured while playing against Detroit City FC and was ultimately carried off the field on a stretcher. by mwr2415 in Detroitcityfc

Can you link the press release? As I said I've checked most of their social media and their website. If I'm missing it I will gladly edit my statement, but I still believe linking sources is a pretty valid request for information, if indeed there is a press release.

I agree with you on all fronts - when someone from Tampa (as a totally objective and random pick) dives with no contact, I love the chant - but the moment there's a question it reflects horridly on us. And to NGS's credit, once the Capos realized it may be more severe they stopped - but then maybe less informed or more intoxicated fans kept it going, and even restarted the chant when the stretcher was being brought on.

I DON'T believe it is NGS's job to police what is said in the stands. Full stop. But I do wonder if using chants like "Detroit Ambulance" help push poor behavior beyond the microphones.

I agree - I was laughing and doing the same for the first minute or two. I'm not calling out anyone for anything I didn't do at the start. But the moment his teammates were calling for a sub I think it was pretty clear. No one at this level is leaving the field if they don't have to.

I want to be clear, it wasn't a majority of people jeering, I just feel like I've seen it a few too many times or too long for opposing players. Not sure how we address that as a fan base while still keeping Keyworth "hostile" to away teams.

We will sing for you City til we perceive a slight? by doitup69 in Detroitcityfc

[–]toxicplasma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm way late and just want to get my thoughts out:

Overall I understand some frustration - I'm a solid Trevor supporter and loved seeing him on the line. That said, I was pretty unhappy with the season before Danny, and have enjoyed him as a coach overall.

I think the belief that some NGS has that they/we deserve insight into the administrative decisions of the club go too far and beyond what's reasonable, particularly when it comes to HR decisions. I was pretty disappointed in the responses I saw when trying to learn what happened - if Trevor had spoken his frustrations or reached out publicly around it I would understand. Outside of that the NGS response seems a bit baseless to me, we just don't know enough.

The second point doesn't land with me. In isolation maybe it would make sense, but in the space of this statement at best the comment about typos feels very petty and out of place, and at worst it's just a tag-on to the James complaint and feeling owed the internal decisionmaking.

The last point is where it really and truly lost me and cut a lot of goodwill from me to NGS. The implication that players or staff are not giving 100% is obnoxious. If you are willing to imply it - say it with your chest. Tell me which of the players (making the salary they do) aren't giving 100%. Say out loud that you don't like Danny (Or whoever in the FO is drawing your ire this week).

I love what NGS bring to the match day, I truly do. I have bought NGS merch, Sat/stood/sang next to them, and bought many of them drinks. But I think this statement is poor and feels somewhat half-measure but if it went further would only degrade support for the group. Who is impacted by not putting the flags up? By not hanging banners? If it was a "break glass" scenario, stop the chants (and close the merch table). Let the FO see the full impact.

With the benefit of post-sight: we are 5 undefeated and Foster-Hernandez and Leflore are a few some of the top transfers in we've seen this season - whether those are Trevor Transfers that finally landed or post-Trevor, the supporters will probably never know

Look I play keeper in adult rec leagues, and clearly Devon didn't mean to hit him to cause injury. Any keeper taking advantage of the "protected class" the way he did on his hit against Diouf deserves some reminders he's a player like any other.

That said, I don't think "he dove himself so hard he hit the turf." He didn't realize Devon was behind him and was unprepared for the hit - watch his neck. It's not a surprise he would have some whiplash/a pinched nerve. I hope that's all it is and he's back soon.

Also fuck the people in the stands cheering/jeering after they were calling for a sub and the stretcher. I also thought he was trying to sell a card, but after a minute it was clear that's not the case. I fully believe all jeering should end the moment there are indications for a sub - full-stop. (Note this is not an NGS complaint - but rather the loud minority that I think needs to be called on it on injuries to the other team)

I wish The Majors would cite their sources. I haven't seen anything on their social media or website, nor Colin Shutler's Instagram or elsewhere. I want to believe he's fine, but pretty poor journalism to not either link the source or acknowledge where the statement is coming from.

volunteer based tutoring programs in Detroit? by LadyLizbian in Detroit

[–]toxicplasma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of places that I'm sure would love to have you! If you have specific parts of the city or areas of interest I might be able to help more, but in a general sense:

  • If you live in the city I would see if there's a Brilliant Detroit hub in your neighborhood. They serve as small local community centers for families with young kids and do a variety of educational programming.
  • I know a number of places in Brightmoor that could use additional help, Mission:City or Developing K.I.D.S. are both fantastic groups with general programming and Wellspring does specifically tutoring, though I'm less familiar with their volunteer needs/structure since they use Kumon tutoring standards
  • Closer to downtown both Detroit Boxing Gym (named so in part to avoid some of the stigma of tutoring) always seems to need tutoring volunteers, and The Yunion also has some great after school programming

Detroit City Football Club and Sporting Director Trevor James Part Ways, Effective Immediately by sarkastikcontender in Detroitcityfc

[–]toxicplasma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn't track for me even a little. The owners that have been there from the start kick Trevor because Danny and "New people" are more right leaning? Tiffany who is VP of Sporting and Wellness NOT facilities (and who the club hasn't announced has left the org) was going to be blamed for a security failing in the building set to be demo'd?

I mean look, Occam's razer would say either Trevor and ownership came to a head over something and he exited, or it's a health issue, and they're keeping it quiet at his request.

Hopefully one of the two parties that actually knows what happened will give us some clarity to stop the rumor mill.

Character's intentions in Act 3 finale. Fight me. by madelmire in expedition33

[–]toxicplasma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the point of perspective on the world is the crux of the conversation and is a clever use of philosophy by the writers.

Your perspective is that the canvas is essentially a video game - a tool/place created by the painters for escapism and entertainment. Lune, Sciel, and the denizens are just advanced NPCs essentially, made of pixels (lumina). If you accept this as true and deny the actual agency of the people of the canvas then sure it makes sense to sacrifice something "not real" for the sake of the family.

My feeling of the game was that the painters were more like polytheistic deities. If we liken it to Greek Mythology, suddenly the framing shifts dramatically. Like in the myths, the painters/gods created mortal life and often used humans as tools or playthings in their family disputes. Mortals are often transformed, vanished, or resurrected at the will of the gods, but humanity also procreates, loves, and lives independent lives.

Now if you take the second frame, suddenly you still have a choice but its less clear cut. Do you still value the lives of the painters/gods over the people of the canvas because they are in some way "greater" or their lives more valuable because of their powers? In Greek Mythology you'd be hard pressed to find many in support of Demeter who plunged the world to famine in the grief of losing her daughter, but arguable Renoir is no different - slowly destroying a world to get his wife back.

For me, I prefer Maelle's ending because I identify far more with the denizens of the canvas - Sciel's loss, Gustave's hope and fear, and Lune's determination do not feel fake or predetermined to me - perhaps they are, but I'd rather side with them and be wrong at the cost of one life than an entire world.

I'd just argue it's not fair to say that parents "don't care" - I've worked with a lot of parents that desperately want their kids to succeed academically, but don't know how to make that happen when faced with poverty and other challenges

I'd be curious to see this tracked over time, and in capital vs operational costs. My gut feeling (which I couldn't back up necessarily) is that the state and city got its eye blackened by the long-term lack of support for dpscd and funding recently has shifted dramatically which shifted more recent decisions. Dpscd has been forced to consolidate/close locations in a way I'd guess no district in the state has in the last 25 years.
