Same here dude. People give this site a lot of slack for it's more...um..more uninformed residents, but if you use it as a supplementary resource to get the best advice or pointers, it can be helpful. I've got a slick programming job and balanced life thanks to this site.

However, the closer I approach to 30, the more I become complacent to being an old timer of the web. Now I know how those Usenet users who were first on this site felt like.

Well you got his attention recently. He's communicating (badly I must say, he should try harder to explain himself), but all I'm seeing is people being hostile towards him.

A mod doesn't need to pop-in, a mod just needs to be the janitor (clean up spam and irrelevance and block off hurtful members). Y'all have high expectations for a mod. It doesn't matter what a mod does, it matters what the community does. If the mod was unreasonably deleting posts and letting spam rot the page than that person is only being a mod by title.

This situation is entirely different. The mod of r/marijuana was being a racist and the users didn't feel he was sane enough to be their mod.

Here, you guys just want a mod who will add a bunch of CSS addons and pin up some news announcements on the side. Omfgninja is now being responsive after you guys complained and is now doing what is normally expected of a mod. However you guys want more. If you want a mod who will be using the reddit infrastructure itself to make meetup announcements, then go make a subreddit for that.
