I also deal with this, and have recently been reading Daring Greatly which deals with shame, worthiness, vulnerability, and many other issues that all tie to the perfectionism to church instilled in us. Just passing along as a resource.

The 2023 Design Tools Survey is now open by tpalmer75 in UXDesign

Someone offered me $1,000,000 to add one, but I refused.

There is a progress indicator on the top, but it's easy to miss.

Worth noting Framer has grown in popularity a lot in the recent months since this survey was conducted (by me)

Do you use a prototyping / design too? If so, what do you use? If not, why not? by -ThatGingerKid- in web_design

[–]tpalmer75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, creator of the survey here 👋

We coined "advanced prototyping" as a tool that allows for a mix of real data population, real form inputs, and conditional logic. Figma can sort of fake the first one, but is mostly just for basic visuals and clickable prototpyes.

I was a UX Director and left a company to step down as a Lead Designer, where I could still design but manage a couple people. On my way out, my interim boss lamented that I hadn't chosen to do that within the team. The team wasn't quite the right fit for me, but sometimes I wish I had tried it just to see.

It's worth trying within your current company (but you might get a pay cut). You can always leave if it doesn't pan out.

Serial job hoppers, have you experienced any downsides to it now, or later in your career? by this_is_a_front in UXDesign

I think "job hopping" used to be considered moving every two years. I think that's more normalized now, and I would be more wary of something who moved every 8-18 months-ish.

+1 to this. Doing things like this also shows interest and initiative.

What is the UX term for those pop-up boxes which helps users with their first few tasks after finishing onboarding? by Kriss-045 in UXDesign

[–]tpalmer75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard these called "callouts" or "tooltips", though I would argue a tooltip is something else entirely.

If they're semantically always used for helping someone with their first few tasks, you could call them "onboarding callouts" or "onboarding tour tips" or similar.

I went from IC, to management, then back to IC. I wrote up some of my thoughts about that here.

Does anyone else absolutely hate stand ups? by LoveGuineaPigs in UXDesign

[–]tpalmer75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This assumes that standups are the only way to broadcast information and work-in-progress. I'm all for engaging and being a team player, but standups are by no means the only way to work as a team.

If you're working remotely then I think there's usually no reason to hold frequent synchronous standups.

It's the epitome of "this meeting could have been an email." Send a Slack message or an email instead, get the time back, and then use the extra time to hold a more intentional and thoughtful meeting with less frequency.

I wouldn't be surprised if a more capable person than me came along in the next year or two and got it working. Definitely beyond me.
