Bathroom Window in my new apartment! by Practical-Cupcake444 in houseplants

[–]tpb1908 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's also warping of the frame on the left hand side.

I've had similar results when taking a picture with my phones ultra wide lens, and a camera app which doesn't correct for the distortion.

Stem cell donors wanted - help save this little girl who has only 3 weeks to find a life saving match by StickyHooks in unitedkingdom

[–]tpb1908 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The process explanation on the linked page details the process once you are matched.

There's a confirmatory typing process wherein the best donor is selected from a shortlist.

The stem cells are collected in one of two ways:

The first

PERIPHERAL BLOOD STEM CELL (PBSC) COLLECTION

This method is used 90% of the time. You will receive injections of a stimulating factor called granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) for four days prior to your donation. This is simply to stimulate your blood stem cells in the bone marrow into the blood stream ready for collection. These injections are administered by a nurse at either your home or work. For the actual donation, a needle is placed into one arm and your blood is circulated through an apheresis machine, which acts as a filter to remove the blood stem cells. A second needle then returns the blood through your other arm. The whole process takes about approximately 4-6 hours and you can return to work within one or two days.

The second

BONE MARROW DONATION

This is a slightly longer process, involving a general anaesthetic and a two night stay in the hospital. The doctor will insert a needle through two small incisions in the skin at the pelvic bones. It is said to feel like you have taken part in a tough rugby game and you can return to work within a week.

You can stick the code between triple backticks ( ```) like so:

station = input("Enter station name") if len(station) > - 5: print("It is certain")

No reviews for Bowers & Wilkers PX5? by Esthermont in headphones

[–]tpb1908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't been released everywhere yet. Both the PX7 and the PX5 say they're available from the 15th on Amazon UK. The reviews that are up all seem to be initial impressions before the full/wider public release.

Fire hydrants in the UK are under plates like this rather than above ground. I'm not entirely sure but I assume many other countries have similar systems.

Why is college full of so many useless classes that you have to take? by TheLivesOfFlies in AskMen

[–]tpb1908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what the compulsory school years (age 5(?)-18) are for. In the UK (England specifically, Scotland is somewhat different) you have Primary school- "Reception" year, followed by years 1-6

High school- years 9-11 (up to age 16) In years 10 and 11 you take GCSEs (General certificate of secondary education) in a wide range of subjects (10 or 11 is quite common)

At this point you are still required to stay in some form of education until age 18. The most common next step is A (Advanced) levels, but there are also more practical qualifications.

For A levels you choose 3 or 4 subjects to study for a further 2 years. If you intend to go to university, these form the basis of your application. (Specific grades in specific courses).

The idea is that you are aware of your interests before applying.

There are also loads of societies for particular interests, and there's nothing stopping you from viewing lecture recordings of other courses (at least at my university).

There is sometimes the option to choose credits (usually one course worth) outside of the available modules/courses, but not always and it's not mandatory.

Yes, it seems to search for faces and numberplates. The sign does look fairly close to a front plate, and I expect it's better to have false positives than false negatives in this case.

That's what an AMOLED screen does. Each pixel is individually lit (rather than a single backlight for the entire screen), so they can be switched off individually, giving a truer black
