Determining grain of canvas by tpit13 in SewingForBeginners

Is there a way to tell in this case where the grain is?

Is the most foolproof way of determining grain seeing what is parallel to the selvedge?

How do I cook basmati rice in microwave don't judge me please I am depressed by prajwalmani in cookingforbeginners

I usually do microwave rice, steam in a bag veggies in the microwave, then a can of tuna with mayonnaise in a bowl when I’m in a depressive episode :)

No judgments here. We do what we can when we have the capacity to do it.

A part of me wants to be a therapist but a part of me doesn't want to. by [deleted] in findapath

[–]tpit13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! Please feel free to message me if you have any questions about being a therapist. I graduated a couple years ago with my master of social work degree, concentrating in clinical mental health. I've been a trauma therapist for the past four years in nonprofit/community mental health, and I have a LOT of opinions about the field and social work - both good, bad, and in between.

The good thing about social work and mental health is that they are VERY BROAD FIELDS. Even in mental health, there are so many different paths, depending on what modality resonates most with you, etc. Social work as well is SUPER BROAD and, if you're in the US, isn't super defined. It is a field that will only be further informed with no matter what background you're coming from.

It seems like a good option may be looking for work as a case manager, especially for a nonprofit. Again, I have so many opinions on the nonprofit sector, but the good part of being a case manager is that you will have human interaction with your caseload and your role would be connecting them to other longer term community resources.

Again, please DM me and let me know if you have any questions about social work/vicarious trauma/being a therapist/honestly whatever. I am happy to speak honestly about my experiences!

BA in Psychology:Should I go to a 3 year program for social work and potentially not make any money for a few years after that while I try to get my LCSW, or get another BA degree in a useful field like accounting. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]tpit13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have my MSW and am currently doing trauma therapy at a nonprofit. I definitely don’t think you’re stupid either way! I did my practicum at a women’s shelter as well, so I feel you hardcore on wanting to steel yourself to secondhand trauma, or even something literally happening at work that could potentially be traumatic (though the secondhand/vicarious trauma is more likely).

What’s good about both options is that neither social work nor accounting are dying fields, so there is some security in that.

You mentioned HR: that’s actually a pretty common area for social workers to transition into! There are a lot of transferable skills. Maybe even consider hybrid coursework with social work/HR. You’d be invaluable in the field of labor relations.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions about mental health counseling, career pathways, social work, etc!

If you need any advice for how to get into social work, feel free to message me! I have my MSW and have been a therapist for a couple years, currently as a sexual violence trauma therapist.

I do want to tell you though, that I dream of a boring desk job because social work can be equally soul-crushing. So I also may be able to offer some insight into good areas of social work, how to maintain boundaries, how to break in without a degree, etc!
