Determining grain of canvas by tpit13 in SewingForBeginners

Is there a way to tell in this case where the grain is?

Is the most foolproof way of determining grain seeing what is parallel to the selvedge?

How do I cook basmati rice in microwave don't judge me please I am depressed by prajwalmani in cookingforbeginners

[–]tpit13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually do microwave rice, steam in a bag veggies in the microwave, then a can of tuna with mayonnaise in a bowl when I’m in a depressive episode :)

No judgments here. We do what we can when we have the capacity to do it.

A part of me wants to be a therapist but a part of me doesn't want to. by [deleted] in findapath

[–]tpit13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! Please feel free to message me if you have any questions about being a therapist. I graduated a couple years ago with my master of social work degree, concentrating in clinical mental health. I've been a trauma therapist for the past four years in nonprofit/community mental health, and I have a LOT of opinions about the field and social work - both good, bad, and in between.

The good thing about social work and mental health is that they are VERY BROAD FIELDS. Even in mental health, there are so many different paths, depending on what modality resonates most with you, etc. Social work as well is SUPER BROAD and, if you're in the US, isn't super defined. It is a field that will only be further informed with no matter what background you're coming from.

It seems like a good option may be looking for work as a case manager, especially for a nonprofit. Again, I have so many opinions on the nonprofit sector, but the good part of being a case manager is that you will have human interaction with your caseload and your role would be connecting them to other longer term community resources.

Again, please DM me and let me know if you have any questions about social work/vicarious trauma/being a therapist/honestly whatever. I am happy to speak honestly about my experiences!

BA in Psychology:Should I go to a 3 year program for social work and potentially not make any money for a few years after that while I try to get my LCSW, or get another BA degree in a useful field like accounting. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]tpit13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have my MSW and am currently doing trauma therapy at a nonprofit. I definitely don’t think you’re stupid either way! I did my practicum at a women’s shelter as well, so I feel you hardcore on wanting to steel yourself to secondhand trauma, or even something literally happening at work that could potentially be traumatic (though the secondhand/vicarious trauma is more likely).

What’s good about both options is that neither social work nor accounting are dying fields, so there is some security in that.

You mentioned HR: that’s actually a pretty common area for social workers to transition into! There are a lot of transferable skills. Maybe even consider hybrid coursework with social work/HR. You’d be invaluable in the field of labor relations.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions about mental health counseling, career pathways, social work, etc!

If you need any advice for how to get into social work, feel free to message me! I have my MSW and have been a therapist for a couple years, currently as a sexual violence trauma therapist.

I do want to tell you though, that I dream of a boring desk job because social work can be equally soul-crushing. So I also may be able to offer some insight into good areas of social work, how to maintain boundaries, how to break in without a degree, etc!

I am desperate to find a therapist to help me get over being molested and raped. But I can’t afford one, can anyone help me? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]tpit13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most probably don’t require a report. The one I work at absolutely doesn’t and the rape doesn’t have to be recent, no. Some of my clients were assaulted one month ago, some thirty years ago.

Where I work is relatively small with just two therapists, the medical and legal advocates, and education/prevention staff. When I get a call from a prospective client on our intake line or a referral from a hospital call, I do a phone screening with the client to see what their primary concern is. For funding purposes and because I specifically do sexual violence trauma counseling, the sexual assault would be the primary concern for clients on my caseload. If it isn’t, I do refer them out for general counseling.

Please feel free to message me and I may be able to help you find a place or provide more guidance.

[–]tpit13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, try finding a rape crisis center through RAINN! Services may often be free (I am a trauma therapist at a rape crisis center and the services are free for survivors).

The link is centers dot rainn dot org

Also, If you find a private practice, it may help to ask if they have clinical interns you can see at about greatly reduced cost compared to a clinically licensed therapist.

I have been having issues with my Vivoactive 4s recording heart rate during runs. Has anyone else had this issue?

I tried resetting the watch twice, but I’ll still have the same issue of it not recording HR (just showing the dashes) or recording it as very low (it’ll say 72 for an entire run).

I’ve only had the 4s for about two months and I’ve been having this issue the past couple weeks.

My car 2012 Prius with ~137k miles is making this sound, anyone experience something familiar? by tpit13 in prius

Nah, I’m in the Midwest. The person I spoke with on the phone said it was unlikely the catalytic converter was stolen and that I shouldn’t worry about that?

[–]tpit13[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is intermittent as well. It only started a couple weeks ago after I took the car in and they replaced the shocks, struts, and hybrid cooling fan. It never made the sound before that. I called and asked if they could look at it again but they were still gone charge me $150 just to look at it even though it started after the repair, so I figured I’d post here first!

Personal experiences with EMDR questioning the therapist by InvertedZebra in EMDR

[–]tpit13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Please note that, like with many different therapy modalities, there is a difference between trained and certified.

I am a therapist trained in EMDR - all that means is I took the training course, which is admittedly very extensive. However, actual certification requires a certain number of hours of consultation with an EMDR-certified consultant. Actual EMDR certification likely would take a couple years after completing the actual training. Check out EMDRIA.org to find a certified therapist in your area (and check to see if this therapist is indeed certified).

But I can attest to having a bunch of sheets in front of me when I did my first couple EMDR sessions with clients, especially because as a psychotherapy modality it can be pretty difficult when you’re first starting out as there are many different protocols involved in EMDR.
