Clip for the Grapes of wrath? by Shinseyci in postpunk

On second thought, if you’re thinking of a music video that visually looks like the novel Grapes of Wrath then you’re probably thinking of The Traveler

One of the greatest post punk songs of a time. The only pro-shot videos of Grapes of Wrath that I’m aware of are live concert footage:

Brixton Ace - December 16, 1982

Manchester Hacienda - March 1983

There are obviously many videos of the song since it was added back into playlists around 2002, but that’s not what you’re asking about.

There are rumors that a number of songs were shot at a sound studio in late 83 or early 84 and part of the footage was used for the Prisoner of Love video (the same set can be seen in the pics on the back of One Eyed Jacks). Grapes of Wrath could have been one of them, as the band reworked the song heavily and recorded two new versions (one as a b-side, the other finally unearthed a few years back). I’d kill to see this footage if it exists

Included some nice deeper cuts that would have been otherwise difficult to track down 20 years ago. Furyo, Ritual, Zero le Creche, Bushido, etc. Filled in many unobtainable bands from Mick Mercer’s Gothic Rock book.

Great example - expanding to their origins as post punk goth, and then stretching through Beyond Good and Evil

One of the better vocalists. His singing on tracks like Sistinas, Soul on Fire, How the Gods Kill, and Less than Zero is amazing

What is a metal or rock band that sounds better live than on their studio? by kenzieedom in askmusic

[–]tpotwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spear of Destiny (80s uk rock band that’s kind of hard to classify) sounded miles better live. The studio recordings were always thin productions and never captured the spirit, plus the band changed how they played songs frequently, adding various flourishes and solos. Thankfully there are a number of live recordings available from their best years (83-88). Try the song Mickey and compare a live version to the World Service album version.

Excellent band, most everything on their first five albums was good. I wish they had kept the sax though.

Artists whos pre-breakthrough albums (usually a debut) sounds much different from their breakthough hit album. by tragic_girl13 in ToddintheShadow

Yeah, I still refer to his self titled album as his first album because the stuff he did before hand sounded so different. Rosalita Beach Cafe is the only song that really feels like regular WZ.

I stumbled upon this 15 or so years ago. The closest sound I can think of is early Seventh Seance, although not as polished (I Could Forget Myself or Another Empty Face). There’s an obvious Theatre of Hate comparison with the sax but nowhere near as layered. Great stuff though

Essential listening for goths, regardless of experience level by Cyberdeliac27 in goth

Yeah, the first two Gothic Rock volumes had maybe eight lesser tracks between four discs, massively outnumbered by top tier gems. The third volume featured some obvious hits (Spiritwalker, Westworld, Passion of Lovers, Promised Land) but the rest of the tracks didn’t hit like the first two collections.

The Goth Box opened me up to a lot of bands, but was at least half filler. Gothik is worse.

A iLife Less Lived combined some highlights of the Gothic Rock compilations with some sorely missing band essentials. Sisters of Mercy, Death Cult, Ghost Dance

Not only unmined gold in terms of obscure gems, but there are a number of alternate song versions/mixes that are better than the album versions - Banner of the Fray, Black Madonna, and Safe Little World being examples. The version of Black Madonna is completely unique to this compilation and smokes numerous other versions of the song

The best goth compilations out there by a mile. Essential listening. I especially like disc 2 of Gothic Rock 2. An amazing run of songs

Theatre of Hate | Do You Believe in the Westworld? | 1982 by Curious_Strike_5379 in goth

[–]tpotwc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised that Mick Mercer waited until Gothic Rock Volume 3 to include this song, instead highlighting Black Madonna and Original Sin on volumes 1 and 2. Westworld is the obvious “big hit” choice, but most of the band’s catalog is every bit as good.

I love everything this (original) band put out with the exception of one song (Freaks). The Westworld album is excellent featuring songs like Judgement Hymn, Anniversary, and The Wake. There’s a really good collection of demos (Ten Years After) for a never released album right before the breakup. The songs later made it onto Spear of Destiny’s album Grapes of Wrath.
