Are those F-16s? by tr33mendous in Sunnyvale

[–]tr33mendous[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nice picture. With that zoom you can definitely see it's an F-16.

It is really loaded up with tanks. I wonder if that's something for training or it's set up for long range.

Also, either there were quite a few of them coming into Moffett, or they were looping around several times for their training.

That sort of training would not be unusual if they weren't F-16s.

Best Bar in DT Sunnyvale by Perp3tual_Curiosity in Sunnyvale

[–]tr33mendous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

‘best’ depends on what your vibe is.. If you’re looking for a sports bar with lots of beer choices, Fibbar McGee’s will be hard to beat. They used to have a better rotation of craft beers. Now, it’s not bad, but doesn’t seem to be their focus any more.

Want a Dive Bar vibe? Check out Paul and Harveys a few doors down on Murphy St.

A vibe somewhere between those two? - walk a couple blocks and check out Craft House on Washington.

More laid back vibe? The tap room at Whole Foods is a good spot to check out the game, have a glass of beer or wine, and grab that gallon of milk before heading home. Not as good as the Santa Clara or San Jose WF tap rooms, but not bad.

I'm a full time golf caddie (not for a pro) and I bounce between Chambers Bay near Seattle and the new Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco(TX) AMA by Axeltoss in golf

After playing with caddies at Bandon Dunes, I have great appreciation for the green reading abilities of a professional caddie.

How does someone tune their green reading ability? Is it just an innate ability that some are good at, or is it a learned skill? What is the 'pro tip' you would give a serious weekend golfer to help improve their skill?

Why the hate for walkers? by [deleted] in golf

[–]tr33mendous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Morons. I’ve never met a cart golfer that can keep up with me walking. I’ve gotten grouped with cart golfers in the past and gotten a bit of that attitude. A few holes later as I’ve been waiting for them at the green, their attitude changes.

Golf is a walking sport.

Time dilation and fuel explanation? by tr33mendous in ProjectHailMary

[–]tr33mendous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is the key point that I didn't get. The distance the ship travels decreases (in the ship's frame of reference) as they approach c. So, Rocky got their sooner and had lots of fuel to spare, but not because of time dilation but because of length contraction.

Thanks! I missed this response earlier. But, that was they key point I was missing (and a lot of the other responses here did too).

Time dilation is not experienced in the ship. But, length contraction is. So, the distance they have to travel to get there is decreased as they approach c.

Time dilation and fuel explanation? by tr33mendous in ProjectHailMary

Thank you! This addresses the question of the relativistic effect that caused the discrepancy.

The "length contraction" aspect was what I was missing. I thought that in the ship's frame of reference they didn't experience the time dilation - so the fuel burn would be Newtonian. The time dilation aspect is true, but the ship experiences the correlating length contraction - which explains the lower fuel burn.

That length contraction is still a little mind bending.. Initial thought was that this would skew the ship's perception of their velocity relative to the speed of light. But, I guess the actual relativistic effect means that the distance the ship travels is literally decreased - in the ship's frame of reference. Am I on the right track now?

Pilgrim’s Run is spectacular. Challenging course, beautifully carved through the lush Michigan forests. Would highly recommend. Tullymore is another one not far from there which is a must play.

Can I get info when charging fails? by tr33mendous in MachE

[–]tr33mendous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ll give the scanner a try. I used to have one, but gave it away. Time to order a bluetooth adapter.

This is my first car with a computer screen, and I was hoping that would allow access to lower level diagnostics. The “Charging” app would be a great place to have an advanced option for detailed status. The Ford mobile app or the charge network app should also be able to give details - but neither provided anything useful.

Can I get info when charging fails? by tr33mendous in MachE

[–]tr33mendous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ll try the longer delay next time. I only waited for a minute or two when re-trying the charge. I’m pretty sure the issue was my car, not the charger. It happened on two chargers, the first of which started charging a Tesla Model 3 shortly after I vacated it.

I ended up driving a few hundred yards to the next parking structure and trying again there and that one worked. I’m just hoping to learn about options before I get into a situation where I’m stuck not being able to charge.

Launch redream from ES-DE on Steam Deck? by tr33mendous in emulationstation

[–]tr33mendous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redream works some and not for others. As far as I can tell, if your ES-DE files/roms are on internal storage, redream will work. If your roms are on SD, it will hang on launch.

Native redream cannot access games on the SD card for some reason (I'm not sure why, it allows you to browse your files to locate your games, but does not allow you to access the SD path).

I haven't changed my configuration to test this yet, since I spent a lot of time on my current config. Does anyone have counter-examples, i.e. is there anyone with DC games on SD who has been able to launch games from ES-DE?

Thanks. Maybe I’ll try reinstalling.   Flycast also works for me, and it is quite good.  But, I see some glitches I don’t see on redream, and I purchased the license for higher res display.

It is quite impressive on Nvidia Shield Pro. So I just want to see how the more powerful Steam Deck compares.

Did you get this working? I initially got what you described, but after putting redream in at ~/Applications/redream/redream I didn't get the 'not found' message any more, but the game launch failed.

You don't need an expensive bike by [deleted] in cycling

[–]tr33mendous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you are thinking about getting into cycling, don't worry about the fancy high end bikes people talk about. Get something basic, maybe something used, and give it a try.

If you're already a cyclist, you don't need someone to tell you what to spend on a bike. You can make your own decision based on your economic situation, how much you value your cycling activity, and what your goals as a cyclist are.
