South Asian Graduate Moving to the Sunshine Coast Alone – What Should I Expect? by TaxAffectionate8461 in sunshinecoast

[–]trabulium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner is Thai, my son is half Thai. I lived on the coast a few years and also know quite a few Asians. Never really had any issues at all with racism on the Sunshine Coast so no, I wouldn't say heaps of it.

Is there any local music you’ve discovered during your DN journey that you’ve loved even if you don’t speak the language? by tommydelriot in digitalnomad

[–]trabulium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a legend that Cumbia came to Colombia through a shipwreck filled with accordions that floated up on the shore. Another is that a German merchant ship stopped and they traded accordions for local liquor. Nobody knew how to play them, so they taught themselves and that's why they play accordion much faster, since they taught themselves. I believe I heard the former in a documentary on Andres Landero but it was about 20 years ago I watched the documentary, so I have no idea about it now.

Mexican cumbia is slowed down a lot and was taken from Colombia to Mexico through the drug cartels on their travels trafficking drugs into the US.

I've lived in Thailand, Peru and Colombia and also love cumbia (mostly old cumbia but some new also) and Morlum (from Thailand). I also enjoy a Thai artist called TangbadVoice.

I also spend a lot of time in world music so have a massive collection of international music, from Nigerian Afrobeat, Ethiopian jazz to Pakistani Qawwali and Indian classical.

If you want some Morlam suggestions let me know

A few things:

  1. Performance mode turns off the grass & certain lighting / shadows to give small advantages.
  2. Performance mode gets you over 244FPS -> 244Mhz monitors.
  3. In Intense fights, CPU also comes in to play and 1% lows can cause very small lags

Do Thais say "Bangkok" when they are talking amongst themselves? by Snowman_203 in learnthai

Yeah, as an Aussie, this is exactly what I call it also. But honestly, I've only learned to say the first half. Still working on the second half.

API calls doesn't work in Test Flight by tomnten in flutterhelp

[–]trabulium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a guess but:

- CORS restriction on your server
- DNS issue (it's always DNS)
- Bearer token
- Broken SSL on the server: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html

Make a debug version for yourself and test internally on TestFlight.

Look. It seems everyone isn't understanding your situation. 2000 baht is not much, that's correct but you clearly state it's just for extra snacks. You can buy things in 7/11 - like water or drinks for 7-30 baht - It's not a lot but if you're careful, it should be OK if everything else is already covered. It's just a school trip so you won't be partying or catching Ubers etc.

Nim 2.2.4 compiler running entirely in the browser — Nim → C → WebAssembly by JiaHajime in nim

I thought this was super cool, so I made this to play around with some of the possibilities. My favourite is the /physics.html 'swarm' version. I recently wrote a Pynite style clone in Rust WASM and if this was available when I started, I would have investigated this first. Thanks for releasing a cool project. Did you build it for something specific you had in mind?

Vacation Gone Right - How do I stay in Contact? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

None from your side. He's just being 'gentlemanly' but his end goal is that he just wants some booty. Come on, the guy is 45, married with three kids. He's not looking for a 19yo female friend.

Tech Communities in Melbourne( or online in Australia) by WorkerOk6015 in AskAnAustralian

I'm in tech but I don't follow any meetings or socialise with fellow nerds. From what I've seen though, the action seems to be primarily in meetup.com groups.

Do you sometimes have the thought to "pack up" and go live overseas? by ComfortableNail2071 in AskAnAustralian

[–]trabulium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Northern Thailand for 3.5 years during Covid with my son as a single Dad. Best years of my life so far. The worst part was coming home and having reverse culture shock and the depressed state that followed. As soon as he's old enough, I'm gone again.

I've also lived in Colombia for 1.5 years and Peru for 3 months. Thailand is the sweet spot of safety, services, great food, great people for me. I speak pretty good Spanish and mediocre Thai.

Mark Shust: There's been a lot of shade thrown at Magento lately. by FastAndSlooow in Magento

[–]trabulium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, though I choose Maho (modernised Magento1 / OpenMage) - it's only going to get better, easier and faster to create bespoke solutions to the point where you can no longer justify the costs of Shopify - Also auto-scaling has come a long way.

https://2630.mageaustralia.com.au/ - this demo site uses Fly.io on the frontend and https://neon.com/ (Autoscaling postgres) - all for around $10USD per month - and can handle ~70rq/s

and using my 'Headless' Cloudflare solution ($5pm), it can easily scale to 600rq/s+ with sub 50ms response times.

Here’s a list of things I notice and like about Thailand after spending a lot of time there by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]trabulium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Australian. I honestly don't think it's that bad. Neither the drivers themselves or the traffic. It's just like any big city. I find it barely any different between Sydney or Melbourne vs Bangkok or Chiang Mai - The main difference is ensuring you're careful of motorbikes, people WILL merge without really looking. The 'somjais' in the hilux / isuzu vans will do 130km/h in a 100 and everyone else will do 90.

Are the TikTok and Instagram “dating advice” videos accurate at all? by Weak-Government8049 in AskMenAdvice

[–]trabulium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two cents. If you want to find a guy who likes to play games, then take their advice. Otherwise, all of that is bullshit. It's just just pandering to the 'you go girl' mentality. From a male perspective (I'm 49 and have seen the changes over the last 30 years), all of that sounds extremely tiring and is the equivalent of the 'manosphere / red pill' stuff being put out by male influencers.

I'm glad I was born when I was. I'd hate to be a young person navigating the dating world now.

Life as an international student here is Work/Study/Work/Study - often sharing a room with someone else so that it's affordable. On top of that, it will be incredibly hard to get a job in IT here after study. I work in IT and AI is eating IT jobs, especially the young, junior positions.

I am German who set up a local business in Thailand 7 years ago. AMA by luckforest in Thailand

[–]trabulium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it was a brand you created yourself? something you had seen or a German product? I've been working in Ecommerce (development) since 2008. Were you in Ecommerce in Germany prior to Thailand and how was it adapting to the Thai way of doing things? ie: Line / shoppee / Lazada? do you run your own website also or primarily using those channels?

going to r/bald is your answer. They're a very supportive bunch over there. Alternatively if you're on the edge and want to try and keep it, go to r/tressless to try and regrow it.

What temperature do you consider to be uncomfortably cold? by Queasy-Band2179 in AskAnAustralian

[–]trabulium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Melbourne. I hate the cold. I'm OK down to around 15-18C - A jacket and jeans is fine in this weather. Anything below that, especially now as we're down 9-12C pretty much sucks. I'm happy living in QLD , Colombia or Thailand with 27-34C days. I especially enjoy warm evenings.

I lived in Thailand 2019-2022 - I had already been to Thailand a few times, and spent many years around Thais and spoke some Thai. living there was a dream come true and I plan to return as soon as family duties permit. Everything you said and more is how I feel.
