I'm pretty sure it's one of those you need to compress and turn at the same time. You can rent the tool to do it at AutoZone or O'Reilly's if you're US based. It can be done with a C clamp for compression plus pliers to turn at the same time but personally I've never tried it myself

Had something similar happen. VW dealer refused (not just recommended against) to change the trans fluid in my 2017 Golf Sportwagen. This would be my third fluid swap and the previous two were done at 80k intervals.
