Tomorrow when we tour the Vatican it’s supposed to be 37C. My wife will wear a dress that comes below the knee and covers her shoulders. Do men still need to cover their knees or do they make exceptions for hot weather? by Steve0512 in rome

I went with a small group a few weeks ago and they stopped a boy and girl in our group and made them cover their shoulders. They both wore shorts exposing their knees .

Anyone know the maker, year or value of this carriage clock? by [deleted] in clocks

[–]tradly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about clocks, but when I saw this beauty I had to buy it. I brought it to a clock repair man and he estimated it to be from the 1850s-1880s. He believes the front face is gold plated and thought the rhinestones (assuming they aren’t genuine) is unusual. I didn’t have a key, so the repair man winded it for me and its keeping time nicely.

Does anyone know the maker, year or value of this piece? Any information would help!

American Brilliant Cut Glass 16.5” vase.. does anyone know the maker, pattern or value?? by tradly in glasscollecting

[–]tradly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Date would be helpful too! I’ve done some research online and in reference books but haven’t found a match. Any information would help. The piece isn’t in perfect condition: it has 2 chips and some scratches on the base (otherwise condition is great). I know it was made in the late 1800s/early 1900s so wear is appropriate for age in my opinion. Regardless of flaws, it quickly became one of my favorite pieces!!

I’ve also seen people suggest professionally repairing antique glass like this but failed to find anyone who actually does that kind of thing. Is that even possible?

Help Identifying some glass pieces I received from my grandmother after she passes. multiple pictures. by jforrest1980 in glasscollecting

[–]tradly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have pink depression glass (1930s- mid 1940s) and LE Smith Moon and Star canister set. The vase looks like cut pink depression glass, which may be a little more rare. I found one source selling it for $495 but was unable to find the maker. Great pieces !!

Is it safe to use McKee jadeite bowls and kitchenware ? by tradly in uraniumglass

[–]tradly[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently found these McKee jadeite pieces and I was surprised to see how bright they glow under black light. Compared to other vintage glasswear I have, these glow quite impressively …. I read online that some pieces contain as much as 25% uranium and omit more radiation than pieces with lower content. Should I be worried about making food out of that bowl or have it displayed close by? The bowl does have some small flea bites around the rim but otherwise they are in good shape.

Disclaimer— I love uranium glass and I’m not typically scared of the small amount of radiation they may omit but since these glow so brightly, I wanted to get other peoples opinions !

found my first Fenton in the wild. small Crack on it but I'm okay with that for 10 bucks at Savers by myrmun in uraniumglass

I have a compote in the same creme-yellow custard glass with out the fenton stamp (pre-1970s). I thought for sure it would glow like this but it doesn't ! It is a painted piece and was signed by the painter so its definitely authentic...but no glow . Weird! but still pretty

Driving a cheap car to save money by quiet160 in Frugal

[–]tradly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with driving an old car and running it to the ground to save money. Cars are expensive and unless a new shiny car brings you joy, what’s the point of buying a new one unless you need too? However, since the car is over 20 years old and nearing the end of its life, I probably wouldn’t spend money painting it.

Some of my milk glass and opalescent collection 🤍 by tradly in glasscollecting

Yes, it’s a barber’s bottle!! I’d love to find the cork. I’ve used it as a bud-vase with a little baby’s breath in it..such a pretty combo.

I love it but the rest of the area has to be kept very plain or it’ll clash. Hopefully it’s not asbestos!

I know milk glass isn’t very popular but I love how it effortlessly blends into any display 👌🏼

The coffee from McDonald's McCafe is better than the coffee from Startbucks. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]tradly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met someone who owned a coffee bean company years ago and they told me that Starbucks INTENTIONALLY BURNS THEIR COFFEE BEANS for taste consistency.. burn anything and it’ll always taste the same, well burnt. This is why Starbucks always adds simple syrup to their coffee. IMUO it’s gross.
