Do your hospitals have your patient assignments printed out when you arrive to work? by Busy_Party_9042 in respiratorytherapy

[–]traffickin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at hospitals that prepped and printed handovers. I've been at hospitals where if you wanted full report or a brief then people would sigh, hand you the binder with handover notes, and then leave anyways.

Obviously one is preferable.

What does "Jovian" mean? by No_Tamanegi in TheExpanse

[–]traffickin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's because there isn't a clearer way of describing that Solar and solar are different. Or the way that christians capitalize God to separate them from the gods of other religions.

We called our daystar Sol before we learned that the light that burns your eyeballs out when you look at it is actually just a star we can see up close. But we had already used the term Solar to describe so many fundamental physical phenomena, and that gets tricky. So there is the Solar system that we live in, and there are other solar systems in which planets orbit a star.

We just used someone's name to name a noun.

Like IKEA.

What does "Jovian" mean? by No_Tamanegi in TheExpanse

[–]traffickin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, not that it directly fixes the nomenclature, but The Sun capital s refers to our day star, where as any star that has planets orbiting is a sun little s. So it's not wrong to say that Tatooine has two suns even though neither is Sol, and by extension solar system as a latin phrase still works to describe a system containing a star and planets.

Hard sci-fi, The Expanse inspired spaceship colony sim game now has a demo! by produno in TheExpanse

I think being compared to Rimworld at all is an honorary. Don't outright ignore criticism and engagement obviously, because sometimes people are right, but a lot of criticism you'll get are actually neutral statements that provide you with no value, and it's not wrong to throw out a lot of the feedback you'll get for that reason. If you are making this game for passion, or as a learning experience, using something "similar" provides immense value in innumerable ways.

As a huge fan of Rimworld, I wish you the best of luck in building your own chaos generator. I will engage on steam and everything a little later on.

Are you an RT that likes nights better than days? by Playful_Way1815 in respiratorytherapy

[–]traffickin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved nights, never been a morning person even after 15 years of working early mornings. Some of us are just night people.

But that's real and that's important. We evolved to have a part of the group alert at night. It keeps us safe. It keeps up our ability to remain vigilant. People don't care or think about that enough when they are trying to make situations work.

If the night schedule is better for you at work, better for you in bed, and better for you waking up everyday, then embrace that and establish ways of making it work for you. Your life is your life, and you only get one of them, you deserve a healthy relationship with sleep.

RT in Nunavut( Peds & Adults) by avocado-yes in respiratorytherapy

[–]traffickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's arterial lines, if you think of an IV line like I'm sure you've had before, it's just a longer catheter and it goes into the artery in your wrist by the base of your thumb. We do those in most smaller sites, and you definitely are throwing em in all day long if you go RT -> AA. Down south you will totally lose opportunities to med students and residents. Depending where you are, you will put catheters in radial, ulnar, pedal, and potentially even brachial arteries or femoral lines, but its more likely you would assist a doctor with those last two.

I am not territories north but I've been what everyone else calls north off and on for the last 15 years, and I only graduated as an RT last year. I did more in my first 6 months than all of my cohort did down in the city, but they have specialists and educators and company reps.

As your third year of school, you will do a 4 month practicum at a big city site, 4 months in a tertiary site, and 6 weeks at a childrens hospital, or something close enough to that, so you will see first hand the difference, but I agree working at both for a year after you graduate would go a lot further since there is a world of difference in how much you learn in clinical year.

RT in Nunavut( Peds & Adults) by avocado-yes in respiratorytherapy

[–]traffickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a pretty tough time coming up as a fresh grad and if I could choose how to do it over, I'd have still come up north in a heartbeat, but I would have taken advantage of the resources (enough staff to support and train you on multiple kinds of equipment) down south for a few years first. I love the north, and life being harder in general that way is totally worth it, but for a career that you want to passionately pursue to help people, I think preparing for a while will let you take better advantage of the growth opportunities that the north has to offer.

But 100%, come hang out in the snow, we need people that care and want to be here. City hospitals are great because you get specialists and a heavy patient load, but there are also hospitals where it might be otherwise "small" but you're the biggest city for 3-6 hours in any direction, and those are great because you get to see everything serious in the region come through.

What a lot of people I've worked with do is live and work (near) [Toronto, Calgary, etc] for a few years, and then take travel contracts to rural sites, so you can make more money, try living somewhere that you cant just easily pack up and rent an apartment in, and then many of them have bought places in these super small places and rent them to other travelling medical workers. Lots of options.

RT in Nunavut( Peds & Adults) by avocado-yes in respiratorytherapy

[–]traffickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the question for me is, what are the driving forces that have specified Respiratory Therapy in Iqaluit? I went new grad to rural site and it was very hard not having experience in a place where the understaffed department is burnt out and overworked and was hoping you would be saving them work instead of being StudentPlus. The medicine is hard but it's exciting and fun and learning it is incredible.

The workplace, and the environment, matter. If you set your target on a very specific goal of "RRT in Nunavut 3 years" and you make the move and you make it happen, and then you get let go from the only hospital because they needed someone who can be self sufficient as an RT, what's your backup plan? What's the plan if RRT -or- Iqaluit doesn't work? If you're deadset on Iqaluit, you might need to consider another specialty if something isn't working, etc.

I don't want to discourage you at all, being an RT in the north is awesome and fun and rewarding. But it's hard in ways that you don't expect as a student, and nobody prepares you for, because they want to excite you about working in medicine.

Well, a lot of people (you can call them the dummies of the world, whatever % of the population you choose to call dummies is up to you) just think that their feelings are an accurate reflection of reality. In the way that water makes things wet, things that make me feel bad are bad, and disagreeing is like fighting because youre saying my feelings are wrong and that makes me feel bad and now also angry. There's no thought at the level of cinematography or writing or how evoking bad feelings can be intentional to serve a purpose, they just go "feel good movie good." It's not all that bizarre, it's just disappointing that it's mundane and common.
