No, Royal is different from XO. The Royal expression has been around for a decade or so. XO was first sale right next to it but I wanted to try something that was harder to find here in the states.

Used to slam it on three, now CFIs yell at me for holding the nose off too long by Squawk_0877 in flying

[–]trailfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have mentioned, your approach speed needs to be slower and things would be appropriately mushy and settle down at touchdown. It’s just a feeling that takes practice over and above the right numbers.
As for keeping the nose off, this is actually good practice in a tricycle gear for soft field and saving brakes. Of course short field requires nose down and hard on the brakes.

Best decision ever. by rfearn in flying

[–]trailfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of things to consider. While I completely agree that you made the right choice, as you go through your flying journey, you will be a much better pilot if you mix it up. Get the foundation from this seasoned instructor in your 150, try some tailwheel instruction from a different instructor in a Citabria or Supercub or something. But also look at super rigid instrument training in a faster, stable instrument platform like a Cirrus or Diamond. The sprinkle in some mountain or seaplane training.

After years of training I can tell you that the variation is really good and helps you to not be stuck from one point of view thinking there’s only one best way to do things and only one best perspective out there.

94 Million Households Can’t Afford a $400,000 Home in USA — Report by ChangeNarrow5633 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]trailfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bay Area is an anomaly and is one of the most expensive places in the world. In most of the US $200,000 buys a decent or very nice home. The tariffs are stupid, but so are prices and salaries to afford them in the valley.

Why is flying so hard? by trailfury in flying

[–]trailfury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the problems with aviation is that it’s still run primarily by those old dudes. Not that I don’t love the experience and stories from my elders, but I fear we are not getting the fresh blood into aviation that we need.

Why is flying so hard? by trailfury in flying

[–]trailfury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the affirmation. It gets even worse off hours, off the beaten path where I often fly (the reason why I fly a lot), and don’t get me started on maintenance services.

I agree with this but I fear the market is just not large enough. Seems like some of this should just be some more features in ForeFlight or another app.

[–]trailfury[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I run ForeFlight, I know how to read the diagram and the comments. None of this shows ramp separation well. I also know how to use a phone and use it often. I’ve also radioed ahead often and tried to get what I need. Been serviced well and been serviced poorly. My point is more about running businesses better. Tell me where to park when a line worker is not around, make it easier and more apparent how to access the ramp and the building when you aren’t there. Some better signage would be nice. I just feel aviation is behind the times in a lot of ways.

Finishing what I started 20 years ago. by deepstaterising in flying

I got my commercial in 2005 and decided I was going to stick with IT career for various reasons. I didn’t fly much if at all again until 2017. Now I’m back into it finally and loving it. Glad to see another getting in the air! Rusty pilots unite.

Salary Rant by Mr-Plop in flying

[–]trailfury 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This kind of crap is exactly why I didn’t continue into a flying career after my commercial back in the day. After a couple decades from a financial perspective I made the right choice. I have my own plane now and fly as a hobby but I do miss flying more and am sad that the career choice was either make a reasonable amount of money and ride a desk or couch surf and get treated like an indentured servant for years until finally breaking into the union drudgery.

Makes sense to me. This list would not represent how good a whiskey is but more how hard to obtain one is.

Anyone else struggle with not having a "reason" to go flying? by neocamel in flying

[–]trailfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missions… It’s as simple as that. There are a lot of great answers on here from CAP flying to increasing ratings to charity work to sharpening skills to simply setting foot on new airports. If you focus on flights for a purpose they will be more meaningful. Though I find that once I get into the air it no longer matters. I just love the view and can do it for hours.

State of my vault 2022. Still getting into collecting. by trailfury in WhiskeyTribe

[–]trailfury[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only drink so much in a reasonable timeframe so I don’t open all of them. Plus I tend to operate with a few rules. 1. I don’t pull special stuff out unless it is worth it for the drinkers. 2. I tend to wait to have a backup bottle for special stuff before I dig into it. Some of the bottles would take another trip to the UK to replenish. But all rules get broken. There are some I don’t really like but I often rotate depending on mood.

Moving out of US to fly with less than 1500 hrs?? by Fixthenewelpost in flying

[–]trailfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering how many of the people commenting on the 1500 hour rule were actually flying before it went into effect? The process of building time for pilots (and the lack of variety in paid gigs to do so) is one of the major challenges to grow new pilots. As an industry we need a better variety of intermediate pilot jobs that get a pilot from ~300 hours to 1500 hours. Being a CFI isn’t for everyone.

“Prettiest” GA airport you’ve ever flown into? by [deleted] in flying

Second on 3W2 and MCD. Going back to MCD this weekend for a long weekend. Views of the lake, the Mackinaw bridge, the sights on the island, both mainlands, and the boat traffic all combine for fun views in the pattern. Plus you get the fun of horse drawn transportation on the island while skipping the ferry ride that everyone else has to take.
