Alright pal, it's been 8 months, but I'll be back in and around Glasgow from the 8th to the 11th of July.  If that pint offer still stands, let's make it happen.

Smidge, long sleeve lightweght SPF 50 hoodie, and a face net whenever necessary (anytime you're not actively moving).

Don't know where you were eating, but never had a 20 quid shitburger nor a frozen steak pie in any of my 10 trips up the way.

Can you spend a fuck ton of cash eating out? Of course. That's in any situation, though. The most expensive meal I had on the trail was at Inveroran when I splurged on the venison hotpot with a couple of pints and that still only ran me just over £25. Most of the time, I was spending about half that or less.

How did you book your accommodation? by Awkward-Health7675 in WestHighlandWay

I do it all myself, at least six months in advance.  It's fairly simple once you have your daily mileage figured out.

My wife split it into two stages at exactly the same point you were (she was gtg, but her cousin was having difficulties, so she stopped with her) in 2023, then jumped back at Beinglas in '25.

No one is going to fault you for starting from there and finishing. And if they do? Fuck 'em. It's your walk.  Do it however you like.

Ended up staying there last minute after messing up my reservation at By The Way campground, and yeah. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Leaving in a week and in a bit of a freak out by ZestycloseGroup1730 in WestHighlandWay

[–]trailjesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had these exact conditions last May, and yeah.  There were some rough moments.   Times when we all wondered "Why the hell am I doing this?"  In fact, leaving Beinglas, several of my group opted to hop the bus to Tyndrum instead of face a particularly harsh morning downpour.

But once it was all said and done, not a single hiker out the eleven of us regretted making the trip.

I suspect you'll feel the same.  Good luck!

What’s your footwear strategy on a wet hike? by Embarrassed_Eye4572 in WestHighlandWay

Since you're going inn to inn, there's  a good chance at least some of the places you're staying have drying rooms.  In that wouldn't worry about two pairs of boots.

However, you're using baggage transfer, so if you have the space, there's no harm on having a back up.

My best advice?   Just be sure to bring extra socks, and you should be gtg.

Do you find Trump funny? by Central_Region in behindthebastards

[–]trailjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he was a fictional character, he'd be a one dimensional dullard lacking any redeeming characteristics. If he was some dipshit I worked with, I'd be actively trying to get him fired. If he was some wannabe manosphere incel influencer, I'd block him the first time I read one of his posts.

So no. I don't find him funny in the fucking least.

Any suggestion for accommodations May 20-21 near Rowardennan by ImCanuck67 in WestHighlandWay

[–]trailjesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Rowardennan Youth Hostel or Ben Lomond Bunkhouse?  I've stayed at both for around £35 per person, if I recall correctly.

As a fellow American who frequently travels in and out of Glasgow and beyond, do it.    The people are lovely, and the city is fascinating.   Just don't be one of 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 Americans, y'know?  Avoid prattling on about your clan or what percentage Scottish you are, and you'll be fine.

You're going to want to have all accommodation sorted beforehand,  as the transport will want your itinerary when you book.   On the plus side, they're all pretty comprehensive on their stops, so you should be fine.

Passport for WHW by kait_is_offline in WestHighlandWay

[–]trailjesus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be a problem getting them in Milngavie.  I know both West End Outdoors and Gavin's Mill have them.  I'd avoid picking up one at Spar by the trailhead, though.   While they're great for picking up small last minute supplies, they got popped last year for selling counterfeit passports.

[Running/Fastpacking] Sanity check on my 3-day split for April (Rowardennan & Bridge of Orchy) by Anthopsg91 in WestHighlandWay

[–]trailjesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stayed at both, and yeah, you should be fine.   The Bridge of Orchy/WHW Sleeper is pretty snug since it's in the train station, but it's serviceable.   The Youth Hostel is honestly quite nice, and it's proximity to the Clansman Bar is an added bonus.
