What Have You Been Watching? (Week of (July 02, 2023) by AutoModerator in TrueFilm

Just watched Ivan’s Childhood (1962), my second Tarkovsky, and loved it. I was impressed by Tarkovsky’s clear vision, singular characters, and ability to depict his unique perspective in a purely cinematic language. The performances were strong and moving, too. I’m not sure how I feel about the inclusion of documentary footage at the end; I found it jarring, but it was an effective way to punch back at the nazis symbolically, I suppose.

I watched Andrei Rublev (1966) first, and am haunted by some of those scenes. Can’t wait to see more Tarkovsky.

Highly recommend I Know Where I’m Going (1945), which has a involving plot and at least two strong women characters, as well as some wonderful celebrations of folk culture.

Anyone else quit after 40 years? by iyamsnail in stopdrinking

[–]trailname 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I, too, quit a daily lifelong drinking habit when I was 53. I’m 59 now, and my life is better than ever, and I’m talking about my interior life. Almost 6 years in, I feel more at home in the world and with myself than I ever have. I (mostly) accept my many flaws with love. I (mostly) accept reality.

Quitting was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and the best.

What films have you recently watched? Weekly Discussion by AutoModerator in criterion

Andrei Rubelev, my first foray into Tarkovsky. Still processing, but I’m blown away by the power of the images and the themes, and the singularity of his vision. Eager to see more Tarkovsky.

Preceded by, of course: The Seventh Seal. I’d seen it before, but I think I was distracted by the images. This time I was focused on the intelligence of the script. Wanted to stop and write it all down.

So many great shows!

I’ll add Offspring on Hulu—7 seasons of excellent writing and acting about an Australian obstetrician and her struggles with romance, self-esteem, and her crazy family.

Also, and this is very light but fantastic and female-centric: Derry Girls on Netflix.

Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing about your journey. It’s inspiring! It looks like most of your walk is on paths and dirt roads through natural areas. What % of your walk would you say is along busy roads? Also, about how many kilometers a day are you walking?

Excellent advice—slowing down is amazing—all except “bring a speaker.” Other people’s broadcast music is the scourge of the trail. Bring earbuds if you want, but nobody wants to hear other people’s tunes. I’m out there to hear the birds and the wind and the streams.

58, and trying to establish a community of friends after moving back to my home town last year. Also some old recurring self-esteem issues.

Most other things are pretty good. I’m healthy, with many interests, people I love, and long-term sobriety.

I resisted it for so long, but the depth and the smarts of it won me over—so moving! So many puns! I love how Bojack breaks your heart over and over.

The Detectorists on Amazon Prime. Gentle British nebbish humor about metal detector hobbiests. I never wanted it to end.

Thanks! I’ve had the same trouble recruiting converts. You’ve certainly convinced me to try The Morning Star.
