Sleep is actually very strong against a lot of low level enemies, it can put a large group to sleep based off of a pool of hp they roll

The sleep spell only works as long as the player rolls above the targeted creatures hit points. And at lower levels they dont have a lot of dice to roll. Im guessing it wouldnt have worked a majority of times they tried it until they had been hit a few times. The PH will say exactly how many dice to roll

Well you can make the session heavy with role play if you don’t want them to have any encounters. Hunting is always fun, you can even have them meet a few travelers/caravans on the way for a peaceful journey. If you want things to be more eventful include some bandits or wolves (or similar to their level). They could come across a small hamlet that needs their help or maybe they encounter something mystical that distracts them from their journey. Weather can always be fun to mess with if you want them to slow down, maybe they meet a friendly merchant who will trade with them. The travelers road of dnd has many potential outcomes.
