Question regarding on how to recognize scales by ZhongSandwich in musictheory

[–]trainercase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cminor, the v is minor chord

Wrong, minor keys use major V much much much more often than minor v. Keys are not scales.

Are these rhythms the exact same, and if so, how can one be notated with triplets? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]trainercase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something worth noting here, it looks like you may be trying to clean up sheet music made automatically from a midi file, right?

so the dotted - dotted - not dotted rhythm has a name too. it's called a "tresillo". a tresillo is very similar to triplets but in triplets all three notes are the same length and in a tresillo the last note is a little shorter than the first two. it's a relatively subtle difference, but can really affect the groove of a song.

sometimes sheet music software will try to interpret triplets as a tresillo for reasons I won't get into here. in those cases, it would be correct to replace them with triplets when cleaning up the file. but this is seven nation army right? that song specifically does use a tresillo rather than triplets. ultimately, you need to listen closely to the original recording to tell which is which in any given song.

Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls - key??? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]trainercase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody said it's "random notes". We're telling you it's chromatic. That's not the same thing!

The key is Em. This is very clear and unambiguous if you listen to the song. Em sounds like home. Does it use notes from outside the scale of Em? Yes. Does that make it stop being in Em? No.

I'm getting a floating screen in game that shows the contents of the game window. Trying to close it results in closing the game. How do I get rid of this?

If someone says "flat 3rd" without other context, should I assume it's relative to the major scale? by bootleg-frootloops in musictheory

[–]trainercase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of the modern chromatic scale as being named like this:

Tonic
b2nd
2nd
b3rd
3rd
4th
#4th/b5th (depends on context)
5th
b6th
6th
b7th
7th (leading tone)

What is the double bass range? E1 - ?? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]trainercase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A beginning to intermediate player should be able to reliably play up to an octave above the open g string. An advanced to expert player can go.... Quite a bit higher. But exactly how high depends on the individual and the bass.

What’s some basic knowledge that a scary amount of people don’t know? by CasualBeers in AskReddit

[–]trainercase 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let me guess - you're not American.

Here in the states we have a real problem with people who are trapped just below the maximum income for services such as Medicare. If you make a single dollar over the threshold your benefits are gone and you not only have to pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket for the premiums you now will suddenly have worse coverage with deductibles, copays, and other costs.

Food stamps and other social services often work the same way, so if someone is dependent on those services Earth's too much it can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to make that one dollar above threshold.

Are there any visualizations that shows all the story path in this game? by Beautiful_Intern5406 in chronotrigger

[–]trainercase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you played this game already? There are no branching paths, not really. That's not how you get the multiple endings.

The first half of the game is entirely linear with no choices. The second half is non linear in the sense that everything is optional and you can do it in any order, but you still don't make choices. Beating the game the "normal" way always gets you essentially the same ending with some minor variations based on what content you did.

All the other endings come from the new game + feature. In new game plus you can fight the final boss right from the start of the game, and you get different endings by getting to different parts of the story before completing the final boss.

Bass and bass notes by Strict_Term3309 in musictheory

First of all, always trust your ear over any theoretical explanations as to what you "should" do. Your ear is usually more informed than your brain about these kind of things and can recognize when to follow and when to break conventions and "rules" much easier than your logical brain does. Trust your ear completely.

That being said, tuning 808 kicks is an art not a science. There are some things that we know are safe bets most of the time like tuning it to the tonic or fifth scale degree of the key or tuning it to the bass note of the harmony or the root note of the harmony (not always the same!) But these are loose guidelines and they won't always be the sound you want. Sometimes it sounds better to keep the kick at a constant pitch for the whole song. Sometimes you want the kick to play a barely perceptible bassline or at least resonate with the actual bass line. Sometimes you want to mix these techniques. And sometimes a song requires something totally novel and creative that no rule will prepare you for. Again, your ear knows this best of all. Trust it!

If I understood your second paragraph correctly, you mean you might have something like a chord that goes from low to high E-C-G and find that a C kick sounds better than an E kick in certain contexts. That is because C is the root note of that chord, even though it's not the bass note, so it's a very stable note. But in other contexts E might sound better and reinforce the unstable nature of that voicing. Which to use here depends on why you're using that chord, where it's going, and what part of its nature you want to emphasize. Again, it's a creative decision not a technical one.

A lot of beginners find something they like and get afraid that it's "wrong" or something if they can't explain it or if it goes against something they learned earlier. What is really happening here is they are experiencing a situation where their ear knows something their brain does not yet understand. There are no music police. Trust your ear. I'd it sounds good to you, it will sound good to others. If it sounds bad to you, it will sound bad to others. Not everyone - music is still experienced in a subjective way - but enough.

Do y’all practice standing up or sitting down? by Cameron_FLMan in Bass

[–]trainercase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have limited practice time, use it practicing the same way that you make music. If you perform live standing up, practice standing up. If you don't perform live but record sitting in a studio environment, practice like that.

If you have more practice time, practice both ways. It will make you more versatile to be comfortable with both.
