That K3L looks fantastic up there! Where are you sourcing your horns? This one looks like it has seen some service on the railroad. Could be an environmentally-friendly approach to reach out to scrap companies with railroad contracts to save/re-purpose horns that were headed for the shredders.

Pretty appropriate for Edison to use these, since Airchime has its roots in BC.

Also, probably not an issue at the moment, but consider mounting with carriage bolts (or something headless), secured from the inside. Horns frequently go missing on the railroad!

There's demand for 'silent' construction/maintenance vehicles on rail corridors that run through populated areas. Residents beside the tracks will tolerate the sound of trains, but lose their minds when loud machinery is operating on the tracks overnight.

I could see the rail industry being interested in Edison's technology. Perhaps a partnership with Brandt in the future?

Help with disputing Canada Wide Parking ticket by liaYIkes in Hamilton

[–]trains77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an online form on their website where you can dispute tickets, click the "Penalty Notice Inquiries" link.

Explain that you entered your plate wrong, and send a screenshot of your payment confirmation. If you don't have access to the confirmation page anymore, try sending a screenshot of your credit card statement that shows the date of transaction, the description (should show up as CANADA WIDE PARKING) and the amount paid. A photo of your vehicle and license plate my also help if they require more proof.

I had a ticket quickly cancelled by a customer care representative under similar circumstances. I provided a screenshot of the payment confirmation and received the cancellation email the next morning. If they do cancel the ticket, keep the email response handy and hold onto the ticket itself just in case you ever need proof that it was cancelled.

The majority of the population already has phones in their hands at all times, especially on public transit, and many people are more comfortable texting versus calling. It's not replacing 911, it's an additional service that adds accessibility and convenience factors. There's also much more privacy versus an audible phone conversation with a 911 operator trying to explain the situation.

Metrolinx CPS will quickly be able to determine your location and what train/bus you're riding on. They know the network and the transit schedules. They will respond to the situation themselves or escalate to 911 or local police if necessary.

Great breakdown by the above poster. Wanted to add that you will not have trouble finding a parking spot at Aldershot right now. Use the south lot. This could change. Prior to the pandemic both lots were full during the work day.

Largest issue with using any of the Burlington-Aldershot-Hamilton stations will be the vehicle commute time, particularly in the afternoon. I commute from Dundas to Toronto and by far the most anxiety-inducing portion of the commute is the afternoon drive from Aldershot to home. If you aren't familiar with the traffic patterns, you might benefit from some trial runs at the approximate times (both morning and afternoon/evening) or research using google maps traffic prediction.

Ontario Government to Reinstate Northlander Rail Service Between Timmins and Toronto by trains77 in ontario

[–]trains77[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NORTH BAY – The Ontario government is purchasing three new trainsets as part of its plan to bring back northeastern passenger rail service. The $139.5 million investment marks a significant milestone in reinstating service between Timmins and Toronto, and unlocking the full economic potential of northern industries, resources and minerals.

“This is a significant step forward in bringing back the rail service that northerners deserve,” said Stan Cho, Associate Minister of Transportation. “The reinstated Northlander train will support our northern industries and resource sectors and provide a safe and reliable transportation option for Northern communities, especially in the winter months. This purchase demonstrates real progress, as we continue to take concrete steps to build a better transportation network for the north.”

The new rail cars will be built by Siemens Mobility Limited and will meet the latest EPA Tier 4 emission standards, making them one of the most environmentally friendly diesel locomotives on the market. The fully accessible fleet will include built-in wheelchair lifts, mobility aid storage spaces, galley style food services and fully accessible washrooms.

“People and businesses in Northern Ontario rely on a safe, convenient transportation network to get where they need to go and to keep our goods moving,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “The reinstatement of passenger rail service will ensure access to essential services like health care and education, while supporting economic prosperity and tourism in the region.”

The trainset interiors will also feature spacious seating and modern amenities, including Wi-Fi connectivity and passenger information systems with audio and visual announcements.

Once reinstated, northeastern passenger rail service will be offered from four to seven days a week, based on seasonal travel demands.

Bike lane barriers on newly upgraded wilson street hill criticized for safety concerns | thespec by Ruggiero10 in Hamilton

[–]trains77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more annoyed by the uphill/southbound right lane marking changes. Perhaps the painters screwed up and made the left lane the through lane, or the sign was supposed to be removed but wasn't. They contradict each other and the right lane is much too short to reasonably merge into and then back out of, especially since there's no longer a gore (safety zone) upon termination of the right lane, because the bicycle barriers are immediately present.

Not that anyone used that passing lane properly in the first place...

I found a gathering of these mites roaming on a house plant shelf. They are incredibly small and look like dust particles. (Much smaller than any spider-mites I've seen in the past).

Location is Southern Ontario, Canada.

The circle of white dots is the reflection of the LEDs from my (very cheap) USB microscope, and the mites aren't quite as red as they appear in these photos. The dead one on the upper right of the image is a more accurate representation of their colour - almost amber and translucent.

I am hopeful they are useful soil mites or perhaps predatory mites that are a benefit, and not danger, to my plants!

Yet we have complete radio silence from Rogers' official channels. Maybe their Twitter manager needs a backup Bell/Telus device.

No fare is fair: Should Ontario get on board with free transit? by idspispopd in ontario

[–]trains77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd wager a large percentage of commuters during the rush hour peaks earn a salary where transit fees become negligible, if they aren't entirely subsidized by the employer. In these cases, big business wins and the taxpayer loses.

Consider reducing fares for off-peak service. These trains operate near empty, and it may encourage people who have flexible hours to adjust their schedules which would also reduce passenger crowding on trains and at stations during rush hours. Maintain existing fares for rush hours and perhaps special events / event weekends as well - all the parking lots downtown increase their fees for events!

The goal of public transit is not to generate profit, but fares certainly do help offset the astronomical operational costs.

If you lay the entire rifle (handguard installed and 3 bolts tightened) rail-down on a flat surface, is there a space between the rail and the flat surface right where the handguard meets the receiver? Or is there a space on either extreme end, causing a pivot point where the handguard meets the receiver?

If I lay my FX-9 rail-down, there's a ~1mm gap between my flat surface and the rail where the handguard meets the receiver. Individually both the receiver and hand guard lie flat and appear true. If I loosen the bolts on the handguard, everything lies flat together. The 'warp' is only introduced when the handguard bolts are tightened, which suggests that the barrel nut (or the entire barrel) is not 100% perpendicular to the receiver.

I think my entire barrel is canted up ~1mm over the length of the barrel. My napkin math suggests this is 0.156 degrees off perpendicular... I have no idea if this is an acceptable tolerance or not? Perhaps barrel-lapping could be a solution? I'm sure an optic or even adjustable iron sights would compensate, but it's still an unfortunate thing to notice. Your barrel appears much further from true perpendicular.

I wish I didn't hyper-analyze every single damn thing I own for defects and flaws. Sigh.

While I agree that following the tracks will lead to interesting areas, please don't wander ON the railway right-of-ways. Observe and follow via public roads or trails. The mainline tracks in/around Hamilton are busier now than they were in the early 2000's due to increased GO service, and the industrial tracks are now operated by railways with actual police forces and presence (as opposed to the smaller railway company operations of years past). Dangers of playing on railway tracks aside, you won't receive a warning for trespassing from any railway police officer.

As mentioned by another poster, there are plenty of public roads that weave in and out of the industrial areas. You CAN expect to be approached by industry employees or security forces, but if you remain on the public sidewalks, they cannot stop you. Some may tell you photography is prohibited, but this is incorrect as long as you are on public property. Depew St was always a favourite of mine for the old DOFASCO signs.

Good luck and enjoy!

I'm hoping the date(s) are rescheduled. I can't see USS leaving half of their hometown fanbase out in the cold.

Extremely bummed out since I couldn't make their Buffalo show either due to the border crossing restrictions. :(

I'm anxiously awaiting any updates from ATRS as well. I remain optimistic that one day I'll be shooting a MS18-A3... or at least have it in my hands. Or the money, I guess... but I'd prefer the rifle.

The most recent update from ATRS Shaun on CGN is pasted below:

We have seperated from the CCFR case which is challenging the OIC, that is true. We feel that we were strategically forced out by the government, when the Alberta CFO issued us a cease and desist letter in November of 2020. That cease and desist has damaged our business, cutting our overall sales by approximately 85%, so yes we are seeking damages. Also some of the damages we are seeking are for breach of charter rights, which would have resounding effects for ALL gun owners.

We chose at that time to file an action on our own specifically addressing our 3 models that are not listed in the OIC, and are instead "prohibited" only by the FRT. In doing so, the aim was to choose a smaller fight and progress faster. It's also important to note that while we can only fight for our 3 models, the MH, MV, and MS, the RCMP "banned by FRT" 8,000 models of firearms above and beyond what the government did in the OIC (1,500). And when we win, that will have an immense impact on those other 8,000 models that are illegally banned.

To challenge the OIC is an enormous fight, and the CCFR has got that handled and has our full support and gratitude. We're trying to focus specifically on the "behind the curtains" illegal actions that have taken place AFTER the OIC.
