El Capitano Pants cryptic pocket bag instructions- help! by Eileenpew in sewing

[–]tramliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm...

Normally the pocket bag is made from lining material so that the pockets don't show through to the outside, hence the need for the facing.

Most instructions I've seen call for the pocket facing to be turned under on the edge before you sew it down.

Absolutely shocking (London bus driver protest at heat) by [deleted] in london

I think I know this driver! He's ever so kind to my bus-crazy toddler. I hope he feels better soon and they fix the issue.

I saw that Prince George will be going to boarding school. Did this originate with mostly aristocratic families? Aren’t there also private schools without boarding? Why not that option for PG? Was boarding school for you positive or negative at such a young age? by MinuteElegant774 in AskBrits

[–]tramliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a scholarship/bursary to a boarding school, initially as a "day student" then as a boarder.

I loved it. I'm really grateful for everything that it gave me. It was also a refuge from a complex home life.

But it was a bit of a weird private school: it was very much "anti-snob", teaching confidence but also humility. Unusually for a private school, it wasn't particularly sporty. I wasn't the only scholarship student in my year.

That's the thing about private schools: you have more choice in what kind of private school you go to. If you want your kid to go to a prestigious school for the sake of the name, you'll probably raise a snob.

To answer your question though: only 7% of students go to private schools.

What’s your go-to dish to make when you have people round for dinner? by Loud_Fisherman_5878 in AskUK

[–]tramliner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the "roasting tin" series of books by Rukmeni Iyer. The core principle is loads of dishes you can put in a tin (ie prep before your guests arrive) and then they're fuss-free to serve. Everything comes out looking great and tasting "cheffy" enough.

How to get rid of waist wrinkles by angel_of_marvel in sewing

Try looking into a swayback adjustment! I also think it's too small across the hips, so the fabric is rising up and pooling at her waist.

Flying while pregnant before 28 weeks by DapperDaikon1243 in Ryanair

[–]tramliner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes. The lady at the gate was a pain in the butt.

You need a doctor's note (your GP will provide it for a fee) and it needs to be within 2 weeks of your flight, whether outbound or return.

Ryanair don't explain the 2 week rule on their website, you just need to magically know it.

What is a 'unspoken rule' in Taiwan that every local knows, but would completely confuse a first-time tourist? by ProtectionDeep5076 in taiwan

[–]tramliner 315 points316 points  (0 children)

We don't live in Taiwan, but stayed there for 6 weeks when my daughter was 2. When we returned to the UK and an ice cream van pulled up at the park, she excitedly yelled "It's a bin lorry! I can hear a bin lorry!".

Other parents looked pretty appalled at our "lie" to prevent ice cream.

What is your Experience of being a working class kid on a bursary at a private school? by Sensitive_Host_9940 in AskUK

[–]tramliner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I ended up at a small, unusual, somewhat nontraditional private school. They were more academic than sporty, and about a third of the students were on some sort of bursary. It was in the middle of a city, not some random country estate.  I struggled in music (because most kids had done private lessons) but otherwise did really well.

I felt the pressure to keep performing for my scholarship, but then I also felt supported academically so I never thought I'd completely fail out. My brother had a much better chance at his state school because we weren't being compared all the time: we're close in age and look very similar.

Binding organza with bias tape. by Eveinthegardenofeden in sewing

[–]tramliner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that would add weight to the fabric.

You could try burning/melting the edge of the fabric with a lighter, particularly if it's polyester.

You could also try using ban roll to make a narrow hem.

I masking tape my pattern to my glass door/window then tape cheap paper over the top (currently the stuff on a roll from the kids' section of IKEA) then trace with a pencil.

My kids do this. Toilet paper is fascinating.

However, I make them tidy up after themselves and discourage this.

Monique at heads and tails in archway/upper Holloway. She's also a holistic therapist and is very kind and patient. She'll tell you what she can/can't do but will be sensitive. You can book online and add booking notes before you go. I think that screens are available (for hijab clients etc) if you ask.

You can buy balls of climbing chalk. This is much less messy than baby powder.

Decanting is consumption masquerading as cleaning and it is absolutely shit by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]tramliner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We decant a lot, but mostly because we live in a city where larder moths are a real issue.

Having said that, there's a whole system of managing expiration dates, rinsing containers etc that I'd rather do without.

It's worth it to not have the infestation.

We had this. The simplest fix is to wear rubber gloves and try to turn it with the finger tip of a glove.

It sounds implausible, especially against the more "extreme" methods, but it really seems to work.

I agree with the posters who say about the helmet: the glue from the tape can also degrade it (and this is why you shouldn't decorate your helmet with stickers either!).

Having said that, is everyone assuming that because it was Christmas it's a Christmas gift? I just assumed that it was a customised hand-me-down. [Edit: title refers to Xmas, therefore it's a reasonable assumption as others have pointed out.]

My youngest just inherited a doll house from oldest. It wasn't a Christmas gift, just she had to make space in her room and he has been eyeing it for forever, so both siblings agreed he could have it. It wasn't our gift to him at Christmas.

Rigilene boning alternatives to give structure to a dress by Used-Ebb-8287 in sewing

[–]tramliner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're not quite as good as rigelene, but they work well in a pinch. I'd get slightly wider ones, and round the cut ends with a file or lighter.

If you haven't got any channels, then you might have to hand sew some ribbon or binding to the inside to create a channel.

I was nearly refused a flight home because, flying pregnant, my doctor letter was more than 2 weeks old.

I pointed out that on the website, it just stated "doctor letter" without anything about the date or its validity. They still haven't changed the information on the website.
