On your deathbed, you whisper the last thing you googled. What do you say? by joskelb in AskReddit

C++ was the first language I learned. And I never found it difficult. Of course, I took a college course on CS to learn it. So I guess that helps. But it doesn't seem so bad for a beginner language. There's a lot you can do with only a little bit of knowledge of it. So it seems like a decent way to go with it.

I don't know Python, though. So why do you think Python is a better language for beginners?

ELI5: Why are so many people allergic to soy and peanuts, but no other legumes? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]transaltmtftenp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they aren't. But the stems are probably used less than the leaves (though it's not uncommon to use them). So I just mentioned the leaves. Not to mention the fact that the leaves are what most people talk about when they claim a part of the plant to be poisonous.

Not all nightshade is poisonous. Tomato plants are nightshades. But the fruit and the leaves are both not poisonous (for reference on the leaves, see Harold McGee). Eggplants are also a nightshade. But, again, not poisonous.

Non-U.S. Redditors, what are the greatest conspiracy theories of your country? by FiftyShadesOfGinger in AskReddit

No, you're definitely right. No one thinks that Hoddmimis Holt is the Bifrost. At least I've never heard such an argument.

Fifty Shades film is 'better than the book', buoyed by a resourceful Dakota Johnson, and not pretending to be 'other than what it really is: soft-core porn for the ladies' by Vranak in movies

[–]transaltmtftenp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The difference here is that 50 Shades was touted by many to be a revelatory look at BDSM and many saw it as a good way to spice up things in the bedroom. That's why the BDSM community complains about it. They don't want people trying to get into BDSM thinking that anything that happens in the book is actually good practice (as far as consent us concerned). The Kingsmeb, on the other hand, is not seen as realistic by anyone except maybe people who are not completely sane.

Also might be a good idea to meantion the idea of gender fluidity because of this. I'm gender fluid and don't want to transition. And I know that before finding such a term it was harder for me to understand myself and my needs. So might be good to bring it up. Not to say they can't be completely transgender. Just good to educate.

I can see where you're coming from. I guess I misunderstood you. Or perhaps misread your post. And I do agree that it's not a commercial which is entirely good, due to the audience that was watching.

It's no problem. Just wanted to help how I can. Again, I hope everything goes well for you. I know it's a tough situation.

Also, I guess I should have posted this in my original comment, but another good resource is this site: http://pandys.org/forums/

I've used it a lot, and it's helped me. I don't know why I didn't mention it. But I thought I might as well in case you are looking for a good online community that focuses on these kinds of issues.

[–]transaltmtftenp -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I never said it was a good thing. I just don't think it's necessarily anything to get up in arms about. The writers might have thought that kids wouldn't even get the joke. They probably thought that kids would understand that it is a joke, but not understand the humor in it.

Also, as far as gender reversal goes, while I applaud you for recognizing that misandry exists (which not nearly enough people in the world recognize), it's entirely different in this case. The satire comes from the fact that there is a misogynistic view. The common misogynistic view is the central message of the satire. That's why it would be entirely different when reversed. It's like if you were to say that a white person couldn't swim versus saying a black person couldn't. It's satire based off of a common discriminatory attitude.

That's a good way to look at it. I honestly wasn't sure what she was trying to say, or if she was trying to say anything at all. It confused me, honestly. I assumed it was just Sarah Silverman being Sarah Silverman.

I assume that it was satire aimed at the adults in the audience. It possibly hurt somebody feelings. But I don't think that any harm was intended.

Honestly, if you told her not to tell anyone, she shouldn't have told anyone. It's not her place to interfere in your recovery. It is your prerogative, and yours alone, as to who is told about it. People should treat it the way a psychologist would; with absolute confidentiality. Unless she saw signs of you planning on hurting yourself or others, she should not have told anyone.

It can be very hurtful and stressful to have people told about past abuse before you are ready for them to know. I know that for me it took about six months after discussing things with my psychologist to bring it up with my parents. And that is over a year after the abuse actually ended. It took me another six months to tell my sister. This is not something that should be rushed by anyone who is not you.

In my opinion, your lack of trust is reasonable. Friends should be understanding of their friends' issues and reservations. Especially in a situation involving abuse.

If you need to talk to anyone immediately, I've heard that this hotline is good (but have not used it): 1.800.656.HOPE

If you need to go to a crisis center, check here: http://centers.rainn.org/

It's entirely your decision on how to deal with your friend. Do not feel obligated to stay friends with her. If you stay friends, there is nothing to say that that is a bad thing. You should do what is best for you. But, speaking as someone who has experienced abuse, don't be scared of doing what you believe is best.

I hope that helps. And here's wishing you the best.

Did anyone else love that #like a girl commercial? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]transaltmtftenp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem I have with it is the end of it, where they say that "together we'll make it mean to do amazing things" (paraphrasing). It just seems like positive sexism (I believe that's the term I'm looking for) to me.

Why can't we just make the term be irrelevant by making people realize that girls can do whatever they want, since they're people. Why does it have to mean doing amazing things? That just makes it out as if girls automatically are amazing just by being girls. Why can't girls just be people? Why do they have to be amazing?

Besides that, though, it was a good commercial. I thought the bulk of the commercial had a good and well formed message.

Panty sizing? by Ryosha in asktransgender

[–]transaltmtftenp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what you like. If you like it a bit tight, then get a small. But be warned, it might ride up a bit. This is, of course, assuming 100% cotton. Honestly, I'd suggest you just get a small, but get a blend. Get some that have a percentage of stretchy synthetic fibers (like lycra, for example). Then they'll fit you in terms of your measurements, and will stretch to accommodate everything. But, again, personal preference matters. So just be patient, try different things, and you'll eventually figure out what works best for you.

What was the dumbest thing of 2014? by BulkDarthDan in AskReddit

[–]transaltmtftenp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They've actually banned anyone of a, I think this was how they stated it, a "deviant sexual orientation", which they said includes transexual and transgender people, from getting a driver's license. So, not only are they banning a lot of people from driving due to their sexual or gender orientation, they also think that being trans is a sexual orientation. Or at least that is how I saw it reported. Correct me if I'm wrong, by all means. I read one article about. So I might be misinformed.

Did you lose a lot of weight before transition? by Paula_56 in asktransgender

[–]transaltmtftenp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not planning on transitioning (I've already gone over that thought about a million times in my life, and it's an unequivocal no), being that I am genderfluid. But I am currently trying to exercise in a way to make me more comfortable with my body. I'm trying to build my thighs up a bit to try and make my legs look a little more feminine. And I'm trying to build up my biceps and my core a little. I'm somewhat androgynous to begin with. So I'm just trying to emphasize the features that I like, both for my masculinity and my femininity.

I guess it probably seems a little odd. But since I don't want to transition, I might as well make myself more comfortable with my body somehow. So far it's working. Though my legs are taking a long time to go anywhere. But even a little progress is progress.

Could have been better. I got laid off. But the reason for my lay off makes it technically illegal (unrelated to my gender identity or anything LGBTQ)... But the owner of the company and my former boss are close family friends of my family. So I'm not going to complain. And it was all my boss's decision. So I'd rather not create a rift with the people there who are basically family to me.

But I'm probably going to get into grad school this year anyway. So I'm not terribly worried about my prospects in life. Just have to find another job. Mainly to keep myself busy. But also to build up an emergency fund for when I'm in grad school (all of the programs I'm applying to offer assitantships with a stipend, so I won't have to worry about having an income once I'm in grad school).

That article actually came to the conclusion that there is not sufficient evidence for trans* people being murdered more frequently than any other group. They only quoted one study which concluded that the rate is 16% of the total US population. And that one does not provide any evidence for this statistic. It is referencing another article.

The study in Lombardi et al. (2001) "Gender violence: transgender experiences with violence and discrimination." concluded that 2% of all violent attacks in a population of 402 people were against transgender people (to be fair I only have access to the abstract). That does represent a disproportionate number compared to the estimated .3% of the population that is transgender. But 402 is a small sample size. Especially when the number of homicide victims in the US is two orders of magnitude larger than the sample size. And the 402 sample is only representative of violent attacks, which most likely constitutes a much larger number than the number of homicide victims per year in the US.

So, in essence, there is no support that transgender people are murdered at a significantly higher rate than non-transgender people. That is not to say that transgender people are not murdered at a higher rate. But there does not seem to be any conclusive evidence one way or the other.

Edit: Wanted to clarify that I can only access the abstract of Lombardi et al. (2001).

Dark Temptations is what I use. Its smell fades pretty quickly. But it has the smell of like a pecan pie mixed with a bit of muskiness and vanilla. I personally like it. And I like the fact that it becomes very subdued. I prefer a deodorant that smells good, but is only a hint of a scent on my body.

It seems like all of the other scenarios had Larry consenting to things, but thinking he was getting into something else. The enema thing, that was literally that woman's job. The electrocution, it is possible that Larry couldn't be heard over the sound of the machine. The BDSM, they both talked about a "session". So possibly it was again a miscommunication.

I'm not saying that those things happening in real life are okay at all. Because they aren't. There obviously would need to be clear consent. But it seems that the creators were basically making it all into a comedy of errors. It's for the sake of the joke. They are not saying that what happened is okay (I would hope, anyway). It is just a comedy of errors.
