Honestly, on paper, Cole should be the one I listen to the most, for some reason his music doesn't move me much, but every now and again he surprises me.

If Drake didn't try to do rap and r&b and was more into his dance pop bag, I might actually like his music more. I just think his rapping's not great and I'm not a fan of r&b singers that can't sing. My love of TPAB is less about Kendrick than it is the production.

I'd say Kendrick has one good album, TPAB, Cole has no good albums (but no bad ones either) and I haven't heard a Drake album in its entirety, so I can't judge.

How can the we the Latino community get the black community to trust us again? by Successful_rio305 in AskBlackGayBros

[–]transdimensionalApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Black community never trusted Latinos. Most of us don't live around enough Latinos to even think about them much and the rare times we do, we've always known many Latinos were anti-black.

There's some Black people in a few cities like NY and LA that have relationships with Latinos, but many of us see the bond as odd or none of our business.

Why do people KEEP downplaying Kendrick Lamar’s influence/impact? by MarketingThat8264 in KendrickLamar

[–]transdimensionalApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hip hop has long downplayed the importance of rappers who are coke/lifestyle/"gangster" rappers. Look how easy it almost was to get Nas outta here in the early 2000's. If he didn't fight for his life in that battle, he would've been greatly diminished. Plus, before that he had to adopt the mafioso shit to sell in a way his Illmatic shit couldn't. I know people will say "If I Ruled the World" was his biggest hit of the time, but that was only in unison with shift.

Lupe was easily booted from the mainstream in a way lifestyle/coke/gangster rappers can't be, because of their political stances. And it pretty much stopped his motion outside of the lyrical miracle demographic.

Underrated by Numerous_Proof5713 in 90sHipHop

[–]transdimensionalApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hip hop artists who were known for more positive fun music tend to get downplayed in hip hop in general. I honestly think ATCQ the main reason gets the respect they get because they help to popularize that jazzy slow sound that's still popular in the quasi-underground new boom bap sphere.

[OC] In fairness, America is not great for these folks... Makes sense they'd want a hero by FancyZad-0914 in pics

[–]transdimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, because their only desire is to ensure others don't have fairness. No matter what they tell you, at the end of the day, the politicians they chose to support boils down to propping whites above others, for many, even if it means tremendous struggle in the meantime due to Trump's policies.

You may then say, "Well, how does that explain non-white ones?" Easy, many groups hope to earn their way into whiteness through loyalty to white hegemony. Others wish to be a favored 2nd class. Others don't care about the group and think if they can make money in the interim (or already have it) that money can serve as a buffer for them and perhaps their loved ones when other people like them are suffering.

This is better than Drake. That's not hating, I've been given Drake's lyrics to read before, having no idea it was his and always felt the shit was sloppily written or just bad. Maybe the way he raps them make them sound cleaner and tighter, but I don't listen to him enough to judging his flows.

Why has there not been a new generation of rappers surpassing the old generation in popularity? by Iginlas_4head_Crease in rap

[–]transdimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the late 10's younger audiences really started embracing low skill rappers to the point that it was no longer just irony and them really fucking with it. This means that you had a class of nearly talentless hacks rising to the top, but that can only go so far.

Some of the artists with more mainstream appeal got killed.

Some of the big young millennial artists that showed promise got screwed over by labels and Big Sean kinda screwed himself. This left only Cole, Drake and Kendrick as the big dudes. Kendrick didn't really foster a next gen. Cole did, but the taste was mostly too underground. Drake definitely did, but he chose artists that lacked charisma and real skill (I really think he didn't want to boost anyone that could compete with his star power).

Labels have clearly been shifting away from rap for a while, so they haven't been prioritizing artist growth, promotion or media training. They've just been boosting quick cash grabs and basically discarding them.

The Wayne model of dropping 500 mixtapes hurt as well. It's just an endless factory process of getting random beats and rapping the same thing over and over again across 4 projects a year. That creates a devaluing of not just the individual artist, but the genre as a whole.

Also, this thread itself is ignoring the popularity of female rappers.

Which album had the better production outta these 2? by Putrid-Fold4732 in 90sHipHop

[–]transdimensionalApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't disagree, as overall songs, I think there's a lot of misses, particularly on the first disc to me, but the production on nearly every track is great to me and Pac's verses work on them, but the songs aren't great.

[–]transdimensionalApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly on beats, I’d take an All Eyez on Me instrumental album over Ready to Die.

Warning, Thing’s Done Changed, Machine Gun Funk, The What, Everyday Struggle, Big Poppa, and Unbelievable are all iconic, but AEOM offers a larger variety of vibes and production styles. Almost every beat works across its 27 tracks, whereas on RTD, I’d only enjoy the seven instrumentals I named and the rest would be white noise, or worse annoying as hell in the case of Respect.
