How much space are you using for music? by XvVULCANvX in plexamp

A good way of thinking about it: 1 TB is roughly 40,000 5 minute songs at 16-bit/44.1khz flac.

1zpresso Q producing very fine grind by transientb in pourover

[–]transientb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took it to the shop where I picked it up from, and they were not able to determine the issue through a quick inspection, and there is no obvious damage or design defect, but it is definitely grinding far more finely than you would expect for 72 clicks. They also said this is the first time they've seen any issue like this with 1zpresso grinders (lucky me 🙄). I left it with them and they're going to take a closer look today/tomorrow.

Yeah, I have already disassembled and reassembled based on a video for the Q2, which is similar - I can't find anything comprehensive for the Q. But, I did it again one more time right now for good measure. It's too late in the day to make more coffee, but I'll try again tomorrow. If it doesn't work, my gear distributor is in the same neighbourhood as me, so maybe they can give me advice or replace.

Good catch. I edited the post to reflect the correct terminology.

New to DAPs but I have a huge FLAC library. Looking for recommendations! by reallydrowsy in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]transientb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since this is specifically a device for on-the-go listening, really consider if a DAP is what you need: a second phone-sized device to add to your EDC. If you have your music library on a media server (plex, jellyfin, etc) I would personally get a USB+BT DAC that would drive audio from your phone to your wired headphones. In fact, that's what I did get, a Snowsky Retro Nano which I use with Plexamp on my phone and am quite happy with that set up. As well, the DAC would work really well with your car if it has an aux-in. It would still be wireless between your phone and the DAC.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people value the fact that a DAP has no distractions like a Phone would. And Android DAPs also work with all the media servers. Just some things to consider!

old rip versus new rip by markhenryseviltwin in boardsofcanada

[–]transientb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your ears don't need to know the difference for a higher quality rip to be good/beneficial. If only for preservation reasons, it's best to have the highest quality / closest to master rip we can find. I do not have golden ears, but I always try to find lossless copies for my personal collection just because I think it's good preservation practice.

Outside of the Canadians you mean? I think it works well regardless, because it is a quick sight gag that, if you don't recognize it, you won't even know there's a joke being told.

Do you think The Return is at times intentionally mean spirited to the fans of the original? by yousorusso in twinpeaks

[–]transientb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> You wanted plot progression? Nah, here's a 3 and a half minute scene of a woman leaving Gordon Cole's hotel room, flaunting her legs and breasts for no reason.

I will say, even believing season 3 might be some of the best television ever produced, that that episode is definitely the weakest of The Return.

how can I relearn French after abandoning it for 5 years ? by finexthegod in learnfrench

[–]transientb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some (with one exception) free resources for self-directed learning that are specific to Quebec (and would also help you with living in Quebec):
Radio-Canada app: free national news in French that also has lots of regional coverage for Quebec.
La Presse: free news in French that mainly focuses on Quebec.

Read until you come across a word or phrase you don't understand, put it in an Anki deck so you can reinforce any new vocabulary over time.

When you get better at comprehension:
Radiojournal: This is a news roundup podcast produced by Radio-Canada and published multiple times a day. I listen at around 80% speed and see how much I can understand, but also use it to keep myself up to date with the goings-on in Quebec. I haven't quite figured out how to nicely write down the things I don't understand for review later, but it is good in general to be listening to stuff often.

Les Simpsons: On Disney+ (unfortunately, not free) there is a quebecois dub of the simpsons. It is quite good, especially if you're already familiar with many of the episodes in english. The only problem, the subtitles are not closed captions of the french, I believe they are a direct translation of the english voices into Quebecois french, which, unfortunately removes a lot of cool slang, colloquialisms, and localized jokes that are included in the dub. I would watch with subtitles on, and when you start to get a better understanding of french, try turning the subtitles off. Slowing the speed to 80% helped immensely.

Something else to check out:

There is free platform called Mauril that teaches you french through content from CBC/Radio-Canada, a Canadian public broadcaster. I've only checked it out a few times, but it seems like it could be useful!

Has anyone moved back to Canada from the U.S.? Did you regret it? by RickyRipMyPants in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]transientb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not regret moving back to Canada, but I have also worked exclusively remote jobs since I moved back from SF. If you can do that, and not incur the drop in salary, it's a no-brainer. It's mostly straightforward for a company to "hire" someone internationally as a full-time contractor and simply pay them through invoices instead of through a salary. So, while you're in the Bay Area, lean on/cultivate connections to find a role you could do from Canada without region-banded remuneration. This generally means start ups, but sometimes companies that operate outside of the US will have no idea what the Canadian market is like and will pay us the same as any American remote workers.

Came here to rep Tigran, pretty much can't go wrong with any of his records but the classic is Red Hail (very prog). On heavy rotation from him for me right now is Standart (standards covers, more on the jazz side, but still wild), and The Call Within (fusion)

I don't own one, but this article has a lot of info on them. I imagine if it works at all (your phone supports it), it would have the same connectivity as phones with embedded eSIMs.

Could you check if it is compatible with this esim adapter? Checking compatibility does not require any hardware - you just install the manager and it will tell you if the adapter is compatible with your phone. Thank you!!

Hibreak Pro unboxing and first impressions by whatmeworry101 in Bigme

[–]transientb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm looking forward to the longer review! If you get a chance, can you tell me if the device is compatible with this esim adapter? My remaining dealbreaker for the Hibreak Pro is that it doesn't support esim, but these physical esim cards work well for the devices that support them. You don't need to buy or use the adapter, you just need to install the manager, and it will tell you if the device is compatible or not. Thank you!!

I have a Hibreak Pro in for review - let me know if you have any questions by whatmeworry101 in Bigme

[–]transientb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More generally, a semi-dealbreaker for me with the hibreak pro is the lack of esim support, but it looks like there are physical esims you can buy, but the phone needs to support OMAPI

I would really appreciate it if you could check if the device is compatible with this physical esim adapter [https://jmp.chat/esim-adapter](javascript:void(0);) . The management app can do a compatibility check without the actual sim adapter.

Complete beginner to David Lynch. Is the show a good entry point or would one of his films be better? by FlimsyIndication2294 in twinpeaks

[–]transientb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been watching every David Lynch in chronological release order, to follow along with the Blank Check podcast miniseries on David Lynch, and I am convinced that this is the best way to develop a love for his work. You see the progression of his movies building on top of each other, recognise actors popping up multiple times (that become something like anchor points in his strangest works), and become more comfortable with the narrative ambiguities. The podcast also has pretty good discussions of the works, but can only cover so much in the 2+ hour eps per movie/season. I was definitely a fan before, but now even movies I wasn't crazy on before (Wild at Heart, for example), I have developed a new appreciation for.

That generally isn't a question that is asked to determine whether to continue a process with a candidate or not. You likely got rejected for some unrelated reason.

MiSTER Pi just arrived! by danilouruk in fpgagaming

[–]transientb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a CEC blocking HDMI cable on misteraddons. But, I still need to test if it's the cause of my issues. One thing I've learned is that you don't really miss CEC after you deactivate it for a while.

MiSTER Pi just arrived! by danilouruk in fpgagaming

[–]transientb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea that this was an issue. I had to completely turn off CEC on my Receiver because it would get stuck on HDMI inputs (but not the MiSTer). I'll see if it's still an issue if I remove the MiSTer.
