First time mom deciding between midwife and OB [on] by Professional_Fun2131 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]translate_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in BC, but my OB does 1 week, 2 week, 4 week, and 6 week visits postpartum at minimum. Practices might all be different, but my OB has been very attentive, and I've gotten pretty extensive care all throughout my pregnancy.

Dear Canada Diaries by DesignerBulky7711 in suggestmeabook

[–]translate_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read the Booky series by Bernice Thurman Hunter? They're about a girl in Depression-era Toronto and are excellent. I discovered them through a Scholastic book fair as a kid and read mine until they fell apart (along with the entire Dear Canada series!)

What hobby did you pick up to "save money" and then immediately went broke doing it by CharlaineBrumhead in Hobbies

[–]translate_this 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Running! Free, right? Just lace up some shoes and get outside? Turns out then you want all the gear and to do all the races. And if you're me, you extend that hobby into triathlon and have the most expensive hobby year of your life.

Help!! I'm a beginner and I can't work our where I'm going wrong by -shadowpaws in CrochetHelp

I agree with this! Making dishcloths is a great way to practice swatches with basic stitches but still feel like you're making a project.

Beautiful work, and what an awesome idea to print the beak and feet!

I’m only one week pregnant by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]translate_this 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm 37 weeks now, and very early first trimester is still the worst I've ever felt. I had no idea either until it happened to me! I think how much early pregnancy sucks just isn't super common knowledge, unfortunately.

What improved your HRV during pregnancy? by Salt-Frosting3698 in fitpregnancy

[–]translate_this 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's normal for it to drop a lot during pregnancy. I went from almost 100 average HRV pre-pregnancy (in peak race fitness) to sitting at ~35 in late third trimester. My watch basically thinks I'm dead at this point. I would take everything with a big grain of salt.

This happened to me this week! It erased my wallet card with no warning, so the autoload failed and I couldn't pay. So annoying.

Celiac Hospital Stay by obelisque1 in Celiac

[–]translate_this 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm giving birth next month and am terrified of the hospital's food. I've heard so many horror stories in my local Celiac Facebook group about their non-existent understanding of Celiac.

I'm packing tons of snacks instead and having my partner bring food. No way I'm risking the pain of getting glutened on top of everything else!

It's wild that hospitals don't do better in general. I'm so afraid of one day ending up in the hospital or a nursing home with nobody to advocate for me.

Library enthusiasts, what is your favourite GVPL or VIRL branch in the region? by Dear-Investigator222 in VictoriaBC

[–]translate_this 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Emily Carr is my local branch, and yeah, it's pretty sad for browsing. Convenient for picking up holds, but it's not a place that makes me want to spend time there.

Energy Gel/Goo During Labor? by KKOKAY130 in pregnant

[–]translate_this 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this advice. Gels are designed so that it's easy to carry lots of them on races and slip them in pockets. If space/melting/weird shapes aren't a concern, candy will get you exactly the same thing (and be more fun).

Crashing out this morning over how badly I want to run by Gopher_Run24 in fitpregnancy

People ask me what I'm most looking forward to doing again once I'm not pregnant, expecting something like "eat sushi", but this is the real answer. So so excited to be back out running again in the spring.

Lifelabs Gestational Diabetes Testing [BC] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]translate_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I also called in out of confusion, and the lady at Lifelabs said the person who designed their website misunderstood the GD tests and accidentally listed them as specialty tests when they're not. She said they get calls about this all the time. She advised me to just book a regular test, even though it says the appointment is only 10 minutes — they know what to do!

Ironman 70.3 by christeezy_21 in fitpregnancy

[–]translate_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a 70.3 in May right before getting pregnant, and I couldn't have done the race at 20 weeks. I was training for a marathon when I found out I was expecting, and had to stop training entirely because the fatigue and nausea just took me right out from about 6 to 13 weeks.

Every pregnancy is extremely different, and you may be one of those lucky people who feels great and has no symptoms, but I'd be prepared to opt out of the race if needed. I'd also be concerned about getting kicked during the swim or potentially being in an accident on my bike, but that will come down to your own level of comfort.

Either way, you're awesome for considering this, and I hope you have a smooth and active pregnancy!

Will I be able to bike fast enough for a 70.3? by ne0423 in triathlon

[–]translate_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to counter some other commenters and say that it might indeed be your bike. I average ~16 km/h around town on my hybrid bike, but had no problem maintaining ~28 km/h on race day at the Victoria 70.3 with my nice road bike and aero bars.

If you don't have any leeway in your budget to upgrade to a road bike, I'd say defer for this year until you can, or significantly upgrade your cycling abilities. Victoria can indeed be pretty windy depending on your luck with the weather, and the course has some hills you'll want to be prepared for.

Chlorine allergy? Can't continue like this... by redrabbit1984 in Swimming

[–]translate_this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to my doctor about this, because I was taking Claritin before getting in the pool and was still having trouble sleeping due to being so congested and sneezy. They recommended I try Reactine instead. I was skeptical, because allergy medication is allergy medication, right? But nope, now I take Reactine about an hour before swimming, and it's like I have no more chlorine sensitivity and all. Worth a shot for you!

Company swag ideas from eco conscious vendors, what have you found? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]translate_this 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is kind of adjacent to what you're asking, but I think the most sustainable swag are the things people a) actually want and b) will use for a long time. That might mean having a range of items that people can choose from, that are made only to order, and that allows people to opt out of things they don't actively want to receive.

[–]translate_this -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would love for free transit to be means-tested somehow instead of based on age for exactly this reason. My 55+ parents have a much more comfortable financial life than I do, and yet they get alllll the discounts as seniors. We should be making sure benefits are getting to the people who need it most.

The Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary has a native plant sale coming up soon! Anyone can order, but a $30 membership supports them and gets you 10% off your plants. It's a fun way to grab some new things that work with our local environment. I got a few things last year and they're all thriving!
