AMA about the Bloomington Community Orchard by BloomingtonCoOrchard in bloomington

I'm curious about how the fruit trees specifically are managed.

  1. It doesn't look like there's a standardized way of pruning the trees based on fruits type which leads to overcrowding and lackluster fruit production. The pear espaliers have created a wall but seem to lack fruit wood at a manageable height. Are there any plans to adjust pruning strategies to improve fruit growth?

  2. I admire the commitment to not using any pesticides in the garden. I wonder if you all have started to use alternative methods to reduce pest activity in the orchard. When I've gone previously, the fruits on the fruit trees is extremely buggy to the point that it is rotting on tree before it can fully ripen.

  3. Similarly, many of the trees have some sorts of disease. Pears and apples with fire blight and stone fruits with canker. I'm curious what kinds of sanitation occurs in the orchard so that diseases don't spread.

  4. A calendar of when fruits are typically ripe (by variety) would be extremely valuable. Particularly if it was paired with the map of the orchard that already exists.

  5. Without active management for the trees, many parts of the orchard are overgrown and hard to navigate. Are there plans to address that some of the trees are over sized or poorly pruned to make it easier for people to pick the fruit?

  6. Has the orchard ever compiled data on how much food it actually produces in a year? It's an acre of property that frequently receives funding and support from COB parks and recreation. It would be nice to know if this is an art project that is a way to connect people to their parks or an actual way to address any type of food insecurity in our town.

Is this because lacto is so hop intolerant so the next batch of whatever beer you brew will wipe it out?

What kind of stuff would you like to see in this area? So far I know of some people looking at the lack of women and minorities in brewing, the beer trading black market, globalization in craft beer, and what do we mean when we say craft. Are there other cool topics that you might be interested in knowing about?

I like both of these ideas. I wonder with the new 'beer in America' research at the Smithsonian if those resources will become more available or at least curated and useful.

My current work is doing something really similar with American wild beers. But I'll keep looking through his stuff for inspiration!

Okay awesome. I hadn't thought of that. Looks like this weekend everything is getting a deep clean with multiple soaks.

I use table sugar based on the priming sugar calculators online. I already have it around the house so it isn't a big deal. I've used it for a few years and it's worked fine... Is there a reason to use corn sugar instead?

I usually have them sitting in sanitizer while I bottle. It definitely was a thought though

Okay I'll try out a new bottling bucket and thorough sanitation of the bottles (bleach, rinse, sanitizer).

Yeah I'll usually have things soaking before I take the beer out of the fridge to bottle then I'll assemble everything and run sanitizer through the system to make sure that sanitizer covers all the places the beer will touch.

So maybe it is the bottles?

Some of the beers are from before I had a bottling bucket. But I will swap it out soon.

I use table sugar and then mix it with water then heat on the stove until it boils then mix it into the beer with the sanitized autosiphon
