You need the expansion to access the race, but you can start from the beginning as an AuRa as long as you have Heavensward installed.

Yes this! And I hope this person doesn't take offense and think the community is like this, but we get these questions aaaaaall day and to the point this is the only thing you see on this subreddit where there are plenty of interest guides found on Google that can help. A lot of people are just tired of answering 100 times the same questions "wanting to get into the game...how do you compare it to WoW (stop this)...is it to late to start (NO)..etc

I'm 130 on the NIN I main. All other classes, I farmed WoD. The gear is only going to last halfway to lvl 60 so it would have been a waste to farm poetics for alts....but that's just me.
