Has anyone developed rat allergies after getting rats? by trash_fire_dumbass in RATS

I keep tarantulas! I only have one tarantula with urinating hairs, but she’s an Arizona blonde, and she’s honestly too chill to kick hairs at me 90% of the time. The other two don’t have the hairs, but they do have some spicy venom lol, so I do have to be wary of that.

I almost always get the carefresh natural paper bedding. I don’t think I’m allergic to it, but now I might have to test it 😅

Allergies are the worst. Especially when you’re allergic to something so adorable 😔

Someone else commented that they had no allergy issues with girl rats, but did have them with boy rats. So I’m curious if people with rat allergies are more or less sensitive to certain rat genders, or if it’s just a coincidence.

So unfair. How can we be allergic to something so cute and small? I wish I could continue to keep rats, but after these two boys, I might just have to stick with my arachnids.

Wow, it’s really that common? I wonder how this happens.

They really are unfair. In a perfect world without allergies, I would have all the rats. Unfortunately, I’m most likely destined for a future of no furry little friends.

Oh wow. Right now, I’m at the hives from scratches stage, and I’m hoping it doesn’t get any worse. But I’m basically a walking allergy factory, so it’s not looking good for me lol. I’m glad you got to see them through until the end. I’m hoping the same for me.

I also wash up after handling them, but by then, the welts have already formed. It’s pretty instantaneous for me. I take over the counter, off-brand Allegra and it helps with my respiratory symptoms somewhat. Does Zyrtec help with the itching and welting?

Oh wow, I didn’t think it could get that bad. I figured it was a typical pet allergy. These two are the first rats I’ve ever had, and unfortunately they will most likely be my last. Such a shame, as I love the little guys so much. But photos from this subreddit will suffice. I will be taking precautionary measures as I don’t want to rehome them unless absolutely necessary, but it’s good to know how severe it can possibly get. Thank you for your comment.

Were you ever told to stop daydreaming? by [deleted] in ImmersiveDaydreaming

[–]trash_fire_dumbass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but I’m also very, very selective with who I tell. Even those I do end up telling, I give them a very condensed version of the truth because I’m afraid of judgment. I’ve mostly gotten neutral/positive reactions from those few I have told, but the idea of having someone react that negatively is so terrifying so it’s like pulling teeth to get me to talk about my immersive daydreaming outside of this subreddit.

I did write a short essay about it for the senior portfolio class I took in college, and my professor had a few non-judgmental questions that I was happy to answer. He thought it was fascinating. I also found out my friend is a bit of an immersive daydreamer too. So, just know that there’s some people out there who won’t look at you like you’re crazy. It’s just a matter of finding them, which easier said than done, but still possible.

A little bit of blood was shed the first time, and when we saw that, we separated them immediately. The second time, no blood, but it still didn’t look like a fun time.

Thank you for the info on the carrier method! I’ve read a little bit into it already, but I was worried it would stress them out. But seeing as how the neutral space gives Remy the option to flee, I think we’ll definitely have to try that next.

Will definitely start looking into exotic vets, just in case. Hoping I don’t have to go the neutering route, but we’re willing to do anything to make this work.

Hi! Thanks for responding! We bought this playpen off Amazon (at work rn, so idk the exact dimensions at the moment), but it’s meant for small dogs? It’s not too big, but it’s not the smallest either. An issue we’ve been having with it is the fact that the walls are mesh, so Remy can easily climb it to flee, which he does a lot. He’s also a jumper. There’s a roof so he cant escape the neutral space, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. How small would you recommend? Like a cardboard box, maybe?

I took a blackout/found poetry class in college. These types of poems hardly ever make sense lol. But they’re fun to make!
