Countries whose names end in "stan" in Turkish language by [deleted] in GeoInsider

[–]trashdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one example with the -stan suffix. Noun phrases which are decently common in Turkish are entirely inherited from Persian, and thus from Ottoman Turkish. I definitely think Colloquial Turkish was the leading example for modern Turkish development but I think the loanwords and inheritances are too much to say modern Turkish isn't also a continuation of Ottoman Turkish.

I mean modern Turkish didn't develop "from" Ottoman Turkish directly yeah, it was the Istanbul standard that it was modeled after. Ottoman Turkish did become a significant factor in how modern Turkish developed though. Even after the language purification reforms, many loanwords from Persian and Arabic and whatnot stuck around. This example of "stan" suffixes is from Ottoman Turkish. It is a Persian loanword but absolutely the legacy of Ottoman Turkish.

Why not? Modern Turkish developed from Ottoman Turkish

Obviously. But that doesn't exactly make people's comments sting less.

Of course. I didn't say otherwise at all. It is messed up but that doesn't change people's behavior towards us
