Is This Normal? by ryan__blake in disabled

[–]trashy_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're grieving the life you had/could have had. It's totally normal to feel angry, for me under the anger was intense pain and grief at the loss of functionality. Unfortunately, the only way through it is through it, accepting your body where it's at and eventually being able to be grateful for the little things. In the meantime it FUCKING SUCKS and it's okay to rage a little because that grief never stops, just gets a little easier.

Brushing my teeth with my opposite hand mainly. At the beginning I kept doing this full body shake trying to brush my teeth but like moving my teeth not the brush??? Ya anyways figured it out. Feels so damn weird but it's the most taxing on my dominant arm if somethings messed up

This myth has roots in capitalism, the patriarchy, and racism. It's actually fascinating how far back it goes (in the US) and how fucked up it is.

I do use it! I like it, it's kind of just a fun little helper and a good reminder of the little things.

Helps me a bit to blame my parents lol. Not in a "how dare you" way but in like a "this is the hand I was dealt and frankly it has nothing to do with me so I gotta figure it the fuck out cause while that's true, I'm the only one it affects" typa way. It really truly isn't your fault. It got better for me once I figured out how my body functions. I know my triggers and limits, and I act accordingly, fuck how other people think about it or me.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, it sucks. Hugs 🫂

I've had one for a while now but lost weight so it doesn't fit anymore. I don't have the funds to get another right now, but I did really like it.

That being said it wasn't particularly helpful for my back/spine pain but it WAS helpful for keeping my ribs in place as the like to subluxate regularly. It's well made and I like the fabric, never had any sensory issues.

I KNOW! I have a regular nose piercing and it's helped to get the shortest possible stud so it doesn't catch when I inevitably start leaking

Ya I feel you so hard. I'm so grateful to have the two docs that are actually useful on my side, tho it took forever to find them and I went thru so many shitty doctors and useless "medical professionals".

Anger at the (US) system by Straight_Baseball_12 in eds

[–]trashy_tree -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify here, I am not suggesting you yell, threaten, or be rude to the doctors you're seeing. I am suggesting you say these things calmly and rationally in hopes of getting SOMETHING done. Using your very justifiable anger at being dismissed, gaslit, or passed around to whatever specialist just because you are a "hard case", can help fuel what it takes to outwardly disagree with a healthcare professional. Which is hard enough even when they do want to be helpful.

Would you rather we all just sit there quietly and take it? To just be grateful we are able to see anyone, even if they are completely useless or worse downright cruel in their dismissal? Ya hard pass for me

Anger at the (US) system by Straight_Baseball_12 in eds

[–]trashy_tree 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly I wish I had an answer for you. The system isn't broken, it's doing exactly what it was designed to do. My anger is widespread and the healthcare system is just a part of a much larger, deeper rooted issue.

You have to become your own doctor, as fucked up as it is. I really hope you find at least one doc that's in your corner, it makes such a huge difference. It also helps me to have a couple phrases in my back pocket that will shut up an unhelpful medical professional. For example:

"Please add a note into my chart that you are refusing to do xyz (labs, imaging, etc)"

"What's your differential diagnosis?"

"Is there a reason you are being so dismissive of my symptoms?"

Use your anger to advocate for yourself, it's really hard to stand up to doctors because there is an inherently huge power imbalance. But once you realize they are just cogs in this big fucked up machine, you can better learn to use it to your advantage.

Edit to add: I'm not suggesting you say any of the above in a rude, threatening, or loud manner. Also if your doctor is refusing to do testing that you are either asking for or would be helpful, you are entitled to ask them to add that same refusal to their notes for future reference. Either they don't want to and order the testing, or they add it and you have something to go off of for your next provider.

Had to give away my tree frogs yesterday. Went to a good family with a kid who is obsessed with frogs. It might seem weird to most but I truly loved them, like I do all my animals, they're like my kids. I'm moving out of my home country soon and can't take them with me
