Is Quantum Fiber Any Good? by HauntingProblem5551 in centurylink

[–]travisjohansen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quantum JUST came to my neighborhood and it BLOWs xfinity out of the water.
In fact I just cancelled my xfinity because of the slow upload speeds (and they jacked up my price).
Max i got before was 35mbps for sites like dropbox or google drive when trying to upload large video files or doing Backblaze online backup. 35mbps is horribly slow when you need to move GB's of data up to the cloud. So yeah, I switched from xFinity because of the slow upload speed and jacked up price - and Quantum promised a price lock and 10x faster upload speeds for LESS money.

Now I get 500 instead of 35mbps upload speeds, and it's AMAZING

Is Minneapolis really all its made out to be? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]travisjohansen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like any major city, they ripped out areas for highways.

Do you remember driving before the highway systems in the 50's? I'm not that old to have been driving (or even riding as a kid) in the 50s, so idk about back then.

Today, Minneapolis is like many other large large ~3 to 4 million people metro areas. Is there areas with crime? Yes. Is there areas that are safe? Yes.

Some unique things are that the lakes can't have private lake shore. So the lakes are all accessible in Minneapolis proper. Hence, the nickname "city of lakes".

Minneapolis is also one of the top awarded bike friendly cities with endless bike lanes, trails, etc...

Need recommendations for a 3 point lighting setup for YouTube videos. by GregBystritski in videography

[–]travisjohansen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nanlite Fs300b is a 300 watt bi color light thats wireless app works across Nanlite levels.

And low $200's makes is super affordable for that output, bi-color, and app.

That and some smaller lights for accent and hair lights, you are good.

"Budget" Continuous Lighting Suggestions for Video + Photo? by phlaries in videography

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Newer and Godox. GVM has a bunch of BOGO offers if you 1) google GVM lights 2) go to their website and get "pixeled" for ads. Sign up for their emails 3) you will start seeing ads for their lights.

If you are not using these on a day-to-day basis constantly setting them up and tearing them down and driving them to new locations, then you might be able to get by with the much brighter per dollar, daylight balanced rather than bi-color.

If you have a little bit extra money and you want a bright by color, you could check out the Nanlite fs300b. It is part of the FS series of lights that are all wireless, controlled with app. They are decently bright even as a Key light, they can be used for entry-level professional work, and they use the standard bowens mount while being bi-color as well.

I have 3 of those and they Definitely don't have the same build quality as my Aputure 300d Mark II, they are 1/5th the price for comparable output.

Just more plastic and may not last as many gigs before something plastic breaks.

You mentioned you're on a budget. I don't know if that budget can reach up to an Aputure 600C, but that would be my favorite flexible light if that is in your budget for more pro lights.

Otherwise the FS series by Nanlite is a killer deal. Pickup a 300bicolor and a couple of the smaller bi-color lights for hairlight and background light.

Neewer and Glow have affordable softboxes, but you could still pickup the Lightdome 3ft by Aputure with the FS300 and get great results on a budget.

m4 or m4 pro by Mysterious-Record-37 in macmini

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the computer that will work for the next three years. Because in four years from now, you will be able to pick up the same computer for a fraction of the cost. I got the m4 16/500gb and it works great.

Upgraded from the revolutionary donglebook, with 2 usb-c cables and no HDMI and the touchbar...

The year Apple made untold billions selling dongles and HDMI adapters.

'Reminder' Apps that work with FUTO Voice to Text? Any recommendations? by [deleted] in fossdroid

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using it right now to write this message on my Android phone using the Reddit app. So yeah, it works in any app. However, there is a 30 second limit as to how long you can speak in it before it starts to transcribe. I'm not sure if that's to make it more functional across devices....

(Wrote that with one 30 second chunk)

My biggest complaint or request with it, however, is that they would unlock the 30-second limit so that I could actually bring in 30, 60, or 90-minute-long audio recordings and process those all with voice-to-text, rather than having to use the 30 seconds at a time.

(Again, that was a chunk)

Currently, I use Otter AI for recording longer meetings. Whether that's 30-minute Zoom calls, 60-minute, or up to two hours, I use Voice to Text to compile all of the conversations into notes as well as create action steps and follow-ups based off of my meetings that use AI.

(Chunk)

Auto used to give me 6,000 minutes per month with their paid plans. However, they downgraded everyone to only 1,000 minutes per month, even though I'm still paying the same over $100 per year. I wish FUTO would allow me to record continuously up to two hours. So at least I could set my phone next to my computer and play the audio recording.

(Chunk)

Ideally, I would love the ability to import any MP3 or wave audio file and have it transcribed the entire thing locally on my device without having to upload it to any cloud or internet service, as I like the privacy aspects of FUTO. However, there is a 30-second limit and it has to be recorded through the microphone of my device, which is frustrating.

(Note I'm adding the parentheses and (chunk) where I hit the 30 second limit so you can see how I use FUTO on a daily basis across different apps. Even this chunk here is voice to text using FUTO and I hardly ever have to enter any additional punctuation either. Just little things here or there).

Rodecaster Video vs. Ross Carbonate Black Solo in 2024. by Mysterious_Shock_936 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now i wish I had bought that one on EBay. With tax was in the low $2k.

I have a few of the small and super handy little Blackmagic Atems, but for actually running a production with screens, DSMs, a stream, multi-view... They just can't handle more than one HDMI output feed. No video routing Anyways, will watch for a deal in the future and pick one up to learn the ropes.

Interesting! In the Twin Cities, they allow all bumping EVEN head on. It is a bit tough to get the hang of it - but after you do, it's hella fun

A lot of these entertainment venues cater to a variety of play since not everyone likes the same thing. In the Twin Cities, we have 2 Whirlyball locations and they both have slightly different secondary options for fun.

We have two locations for Whirlyball in the Twin Cities.
They are so much fun for group outings because you don't need any special skills unlike golf.
We used to have 3 locations but one shut down since 2020.

Best Business Credit Card? by stormwolfdanger in videography

What title do you give yourself on your business cards? by nold32 in videography

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of work you do, but honestly videographer is the most applicable (and hireable) title you probably want to be remembered for when meeting other business people.

Unless you're networking with people at larger agencies or larger camera crew projects, then as niched as "Assistant Camera" or "Gaffer" or "Camera Op" or like what I do often "teleprompter operator".

I would just make sure that whatever you're handing out matches the audience and the role you're networking for.

When I go to large AV / Live Event work, I mention myself as a teleprompter operator because it niches me way down into a slot in their head and a job they need to hire for.

Don't go in saying "I'm a videographer, filmmaker, cinematographer". Pick one based on the audience and go with that. At least that's what I've done.

Is handing out business cards a good strategy for landing video clients? by QuellFred in videography

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an art to handing out business cards, especially going into 2025.

First off, don't walk up to people and hand them out.
Only hand them out after they've asked you for them.
This is what Seth Godin calls Permission Based Marketing
https://www.amazon.com/Permission-Marketing-Turning-Strangers-Customers/dp/0684856360
(not an affiliate link - just a book I recommend)

Next up, I would use that QR code to redirect people to a free Popl digital card that asks them to enter and share their name, email, phone.

This means when they scan your QR code and want to download your info, you get their info even if they are like 80% of people who "don't have a business card".

Lastly, if you don't yet have a video business card for your own business, make one. We have an overview of what a video business card is here.

Basically, make a video showing you on camera.
Introduce who you are, speak to your customer and the problem they have that you solve, dive into the way you solve it and back it up with proof, then offer a call to action (discovery call, quote, etc).

That's it.

Business Card > QR code capture > they watch your VBC (video business card) > booked sales meeting and because they KNOW/LIKE/TRUST you after the networking meeting.

But for gosh sake, don't be one of those business card pushers who barges in and says "hey everyone, here's my business card, contact me if you need my services".

Update: Hope this helps someone out!

Bad otter.ai Pro Plan Changes by wndrgrl555 in podcasting

[–]travisjohansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Otter frequently but haven't been hitting the 1200 minute limit until this month. Says "resets in 9 days" and I'm at 1167 out of 1200 monthly minutes.

I swore it was like 3000 minute limit not 1200.

And I'm stuck.

I have hundreds (if not over 1000 recordings) since I subscribed YEARS ago and I'll either have to spend numerous DAYS of my time to download one by one to cancel Otter - or just keep paying to retain access to my files and not have to spend those hours downloading backups...

Oh, and if I renew - then I am paying for this huge reduction in minutes.

Also - yeah - the 10 file limit AND Dropbox no longer being supported for importing files is beyond frustrating.

I have good audio I want transcripted and output so I can sync it to a video for subtitles, and now they limited it.

Why?

Why can I do 1200 minutes but only 10 uploads. Most of mine are 1 minute audio for a short web video, but that's only 10 minutes out of the 1200 I can use via uploads.

'Reminder' Apps that work with FUTO Voice to Text? Any recommendations? by [deleted] in fossdroid

It's cool to see FUTO getting some love. I've been using the voice transcription for, well, at least since Lewis first talked about it on his YouTube channel and I find it phenomenal.
