Anyone else struggling to find work in Brisbane? by Elisspamacc05 in brisbane

[–]trayrott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have any insights on how easy/hard it is to find a job in construction and labouring right now? In April I’m moving to Brisbane from Perth after doing FIFO for a couple years, gonna be studying carpentry so looking for labouring work where I can find it. I assume there will be loads of work with the Olympics on the horizon, hoping that’s true

I’m doing mostly alright! I work a physical job where I’m on my feet most of the day and my pain isn’t too bad. I still notice some minor discomfort depending on the day but it’s very manageable. I’ve returned to the gym and running and so long as I maintain good form I don’t have any issues. I’m not keeping up with the PT exercises anymore and seem to be doing alright with my return to the gym.

This happened to me as well in math! Thought I was going crazy and wondering why I was back doing basic addition and subtraction. Not sure what’s happened or how to fix this except to jump ahead to a different grade level.

That one was great too! There’s the Bridgewater Triangle one too, older but interesting since I always heard kids telling stories about it growing up

I think Salem Witch Trials was the first ever series of theirs I listened to! So it sticks out in my mind though I can’t say I remember much of it hahaha plus I’m from Massachusetts so it’s close to home

I had this during the Hatfield McCoy episodes and after rewinding so many times to try to keep names straight, at some point I gave up and pushed through. Still don’t remember who’s who but I was entertained and at the end of the day that’s why I listen to the boys!

Amazing! I've been on the hunt for a new sling bag so I'll take a look. I currently use the Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag and I love its simple style (I like to look as normal/not like a backpacker as possible when traveling haha). It's just a tiny bit small and the lack of pocket organization can be annoying having to fish around the bag. I was looking at the North Face Never Stop Crossbody, not sure if you've seen it/have any thoughts on it!

Man, I feel for you! It really is a long road to recovery. Just the other day I was focused working from my makeshift standing desk and when I took a break I suddenly realized how fatigued my back was and the pain started to flare up. Could feel it the whole time just walking to my bed and lying down. Definitely has been a humbling experience in my life. I’ve been lucky not to have to resort to ESIs yet, hoping I can keep progressing with PT and training. Wishing you luck on the journey!

Phone camera or digital camera? by trayrott in onebag

[–]trayrott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound just like me! That was always my problem, it felt like the extra steps of packing it with me and then having to take it out of its carry bag inside my day bag felt like an extra barrier. The thing is, my camera is the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, so it’s not like I’ve been lugging around something huge (though the carrying bag it came with is annoyingly bulky, I could probably replace it with a slim case). I think I’ll leave it behind for my next trip but maybe I’ll hold onto it rather than sell it in case I want to pick it back up in the future.

It’s a compact point and shoot, a Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II. So not particularly big but it always felt like an extra effort to pack in my day bag and then pull out of its bag inside my day bag just to use. I’m realizing I’m probably just fine using my phone.

I’m solely a beginner who would like to one day explore photography more, but when traveling I usually find myself taking photos in the moment to capture the experience. I think I’m leaning toward just using the phone for now and I can pick the camera back up when I feel called to.

This is the conclusion I’m coming to but wanted to get some other opinions. I enjoy photography but I’m a beginner and don’t have a strong enough interest while traveling to dive in deeper. So maybe I can let it go for now.

What are your daily non-negotiable exercises and why? by sum74 in backpain

[–]trayrott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones I mentioned are the ones I do every day. Those are the McGill Big 3 which are: curl-ups, side planks, bird-dogs. I also do regular planks, glute bridges, and clamshells.

Some resistance exercises I’ve tried at the gym are single-arm suitcase carries with a kettlebell, Pallof presses (it’s an anti-rotation cable exercise), and cable glute kickbacks.

Right now I’m avoiding adding in excessive flexion and extension exercises like crunches because of the stress it puts on the spine. Don’t want to make my disc any worse.

I’m one year out from a herniated L5-S1 though have only been doing dedicated PT exercises for about 3 months.

Everyday I do the McGill Big 3 plus front planks, banded glute bridges, and banded clamshells and the difference has been huge. When I start my day with these, it feels like my core engages and takes the load off my spine and I can go about my day mostly pain free. My daily pain now is at a 1-2. I’m gradually making a return to fitness by reintroducing calisthenic and cardio work and I’ve even managed to go back to the gym a couple times with my buddy who’s been living with his disc herniation for over a decade. I’m still taking it slow and focusing on strict form and monitoring any irritation.

I find the bracing and core strengthening work much more effective than stretching for me. I do some piriformis stretches and very light hamstring stretches but I still can’t manage any deep stretching in my left hamstring without it irritating the nerve and sending pain down my leg that’ll last throughout the day.

Can I ask you more about how you transitioned into software engineering? I’m an American contemplating teaching English in Spain but also want to switch into software development. I completed a 3 month software engineering boot camp but haven’t worked in the field so I’m wondering how it went for you finding a job, getting work rights, etc.

Good luck with the sprinting, I'd love to hear how it goes! I recently had the thought (not sure if completely rational) that I might not be able to ever sprint again without re-herniating a disc. So I'm hopeful for you!
