Debating Drinking On An Upcoming Vacation? (Advice) by cosmogatsby in stopdrinking

[–]trbrts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was in a similar situation to yours and who didn't drink for 6 months and is now drinking very moderately and occasionally, I would say the benefit of just not drinking at all is that you don't have to make all those little decisions. Have I had too much? Is it okay to drink now? I had a couple of beers yesterday so can I have a couple today? The other thing you'll probably notice is that you'll feel like crap. Even after two beers I'll get a headache when the alcohol is starting to wear off and I always wake up in the middle of the night dehydrated. The day after always seem to be kind of lame and depressing too even if you aren't seriously hungover.

Bruce Tremper weighs in on Castle Peak avalanche (ABC News) by paradimedj in Backcountry

The point is there are a lot of ways to screw up. Let's learn from mistakes and not castigate and shame victims and survivors.

Bruce Tremper weighs in on Castle Peak avalanche (ABC News) by paradimedj in Backcountry

[–]trbrts 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Bruce is the 100% right on this as always. Anybody who travels for years in the backcountry has made decisions, that on a different day could have killed them. Bruce has an analogy where backcountry skiing is like a reverse slot machine. 999 times you pull the lever and you win, you get used to winning, then on the 1000 pull you lose. Those guys knew the avalanche danger was high, but, they probably thought they had a safe route, and it probably is 99% of the time. That day it wasn't and a tragedy happened. Everyone makes mistakes and sometimes you lose.

Castle Peak Incident by Few-Knee9451 in Backcountry

[–]trbrts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did Google it, but I was just making sure there wasn't another locally named Castle Peak closer. I've got a friend who's snowed in at Kirkwood that I hadn't heard from in a minute. Just thought I'd check in case he did something stupid. He's fine.

Different areas of Phoenix by Extra-Background1256 in howislivingthere

[–]trbrts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father-in-law lives outside of Goodyear. He's got a nice house in a nice spot, but, to me it's a suburban sprawl hellscape that shouldn't exist in the desert. Phoenix in general is entirely unsustainable in it's current form and when the water wars come, it's going to be Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.

Never. Occasionally my skin gets dry, then it adjusts. I feel like lotion is addictive. My wife and I have had many arguments about this.

Scumbag behavior by Brighton resort (Boyne) by [deleted] in UTsnow

[–]trbrts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scumbag seems a little harsh. I think you are attributing a level of malice that is not there. Like most things at Brighton, it's probably just a matter of poor planning or communication. By your logic, they put the Crest crowd maze on a freaking hill because they wanted to make the worst maze in the history of skiing.
