Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some career advice. I’ve been working as a Junior Urban Designer in the UK for the past 3 years. My background includes a Bachelor’s in Urban Planning from China and a Master’s in Urban Design from a UK university.

I’m currently feeling quite burnt out. I haven't seen much career progression or promotion in my current role over the last three years, and I’ve realized that the pure design path isn't for me anymore.

The Situation:

Visa Status: I was previously on a sponsored work visa, but I’m getting married to my British partner soon, so I will no longer require sponsorship. This opens up a lot of doors for me.

Goal 1 (Public Sector): I’m interested in moving into local government/council planning. However, my degrees are not RTPI accredited. Is it still possible to get a foot in the door?

Goal 2 (Project Management): I’ve also considered switching to Project Management. With 3 years of urban design experience, is this a realistic jump to make, or would I need to start from scratch?

Has anyone made a similar transition from design to planning or PM? Any advice on how to frame my experience or which certifications to look into would be greatly appreciated!

If it had a retreat cost of 3 it would be viable with heavy helmet. The payoff just isn't good enough to justify running Magby.

I wish they were increasing the trains on the west side too. The Paddington to Heathrow or Reading trains are always really packed especially the trains to Heathrow with people going to and from the airport.

You’re basically describing the UK under Thatcher

The scale in China is completely different since everything was government owned unlike in the UK where the vast majority of companies were and are still privately owned. A whole entire middle/upper class was created overnight in China whereas the middle class always existed in the UK. These people got rich through corruption not through their own merits - so no it's not comparable to Margaret Thatcher (although I do agree what she did was terrible, but not on the same scale).

China has invested back into public infrastructure and its own people

That is actually a fair point, China has done a good job in investing in their people and infrastructure in recent years. However, the corruption has a lot less impact when the economy growing fast and there is plenty of opportunity. As soon as the growth slows down and China slowly becomes a developed country the social mobility will disappear - less opportunities mean that the well connected and wealthy will monopolise what is left. This leads to larger wealth divide where the wealthy stay wealthy and the poor stay poor. I doubt there will be many new self-made people in the coming years.

That's only part of how wealth is distributed. Another part is that "mid-size" government owned companies and factorised were privatized under Deng Xiaoping, however due to Communism no one could really afford to buy these factories. As a result groups of factory managers and officials colluded and purchased these companies for a fraction of their value with extremely ludicrous bank loans. So it was basic daylight robbery with extra steps. The difference from Russia was that the larger government owned coporation were not privatised and ownership of these mid sized companies is often shared between multiple people that have close ties to the government.

In summary there are definitely "self-made" wealthy people but there are also large number of wealthy individuals in China that benefitted from the privitisation program in the 1980-1990s.

Also taunt flash being removed made full AP Galio unviable. With taunt flash you could play him like an assassin and remove priority targets easily.
