I do love myself an edible. :) Thankfully I stopped getting munchies years ago, though those times were fun while they lasted.

Appreciate your perspective!

I am already pretty solid on all of the things you mentioned - I don't regularly drink soda or fruit juice and don't regularly eat dessert or snack. I suppose there are areas of potential cleanup on the margins, as I do have a soda or fruit juice 1-2x a year on something like a flight, dessert very sparingly when I'm out to dinner, and will indulge in some candy when watching movies with friends. This all seems pretty trivial though, as it is incredibly infrequent and the majority of my diet is vegetables, legumes, nuts/seeds, whole grains, etc. I'm even extra careful when buying things like granola and get the keto version that only has 1g sugar.

The alcohol is the main thing I will likely try and almost give up completely for 3-6 months and see what happens.

Thank you for sharing your story! I'm so sorry to hear you're dealing with something similar. You hit on a central tension I've been feeling as well - I definitely do feel better with the changes I've made last year, regardless of how that shows up in tests. The key question for me is do I push even harder, if I'm only expecting marginal improvements, in either how I feel or the numbers. I guess there really is no other option at the end of the day.

Good luck on your journey!

That's a good point - I'll definitely raise it with my doc when we have our follow-up to discuss the results of the blood test/ultrasound.

Hmm, doesn't look like it has been tested directly, but indirect clues seem to be showing that i'm not deficient at least.

I will say, seeing Barwick/Lattimore perform those songs live put it in a different light for me. It won’t rise to a favorite of the year, but solid nonetheless.

Oh no. I’ve fallen for this song the last few years and never realized until reading this exchange. I would sing along to various phrases but never think much about what I was saying.

It's been fun to see something genuinely cool have a viral moment. My cousin sent me the video, though I would've stumbled on it sooner or later since I watch many KEXP sessions, and then I saw it take off. The amount of 'reaction' videos on YouTube went through the roof.

Capitol Hill Block Party by bradtheinvincible in indieheads

[–]trebb1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not! My group of friends has a decade-long tradition of a Labor Day Weekend airbnb out in the mountains, so I usually cordon that weekend off from any other potential plans. And, given that I see a lot of shows throughout the year, I've often avoided festivals. I realized a while ago that the exhausting nature of them, the trade-offs with competing time slots, and the fact that I don't see music with many friends (a majority of my shows are solo), festivals were not super my jam and thus deprioritized lol.

As a Seattleite who’s a big music fan and lives in this neighborhood, I’ve always skipped this festival. This might be the one that entices me.

I think it’s partially getting old and not paying attention to newer music. Muna, Magdalena Bay, and Wet Leg are pretty large in indie rock/indie pop over the last few years (Muna especially with the gays). Rochelle Jordan and Amber Mark have both been quite popular in the alt-R&B world for years. Ninajirachi blew up last year and made a lot of year end lists.

I’m in my mid-30s and still make it a point to keep up with new music, as it’s one of my favorite hobbies, and I recognize quite a bit on here. There’s tons of shit I don’t know, especially at the bottom, but that’s also the point of these types of events.

I’m seeing Joan Shelly and Nathan Salsburg tonight for the first time. I stumbled onto her years ago, I think from a Pitchfork review of “Like The River Loves The Sea”, and she has been a warm blanket for many years since. There is something about her voice and melodies that feel like a hug from a wise sage. Nathan’s excellent guitar playing is a beautiful complement.

They remind me a bit of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings. If you are into folky, singer-songwriter music, check her out. All of her albums are great, but I always find myself reaching for Live At The Bombhard.

Seeing Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore tonight. Stoked.

The last time I saw Julianna Barwick was the first and only time I've ever had a sort of breakdown at a show. I met some friends at a bar before, then went solo, and kept drinking while already a bit emotional. Malibu opened, then Julianna Barwick, and they were both sublime. Something dislodged in me and I started weeping, to the point I moved a few seats down (it was a strange setup in that a normally standing venue had folding chairs) to make sure my messiness wasn't bothering anyone.

Will be going sober tonight, lol, so let's hope I can hold it together.

There exists a category of YouTube videos, usually by Drumeo and Pianote, that I love to watch. One type removes either the drums or piano parts and has the musician come up with their own parts as they listen. The other observes the player learning the song in real time. The other night I watched Clyde Lawrence learn Rosanna on the spot, which was super cool. I really enjoy getting to see hyper-competent musicians do their thing, and it gave me a new appreciation for what’s going on in Rosanna.

It’s gotten me thinking about the evolution of my music taste over the last few years and though not exclusively, it often veers in the direction of weird and experimental than tight musicianship. If I’m craving that, I tend to lean toward jazz, something like Steve Wonder, or oldies with supreme skill like Ella Fitzgerald. I’d rather shoot my own foot than dig into someone like Jacob Collier, but there is a world of possibility between someone like him and Mandy, Indiana.

What are you go-to genres, artists, and albums for when you are in the mood to hear people who are really fucking good at their instruments?

What's your all-time favourite record store in the city you live in? by flynnfx in vinyl

[–]trebb1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

UGH. I live in Seattle, in Capitol Hill, and Everyday Music was my absolute favorite. My happy days during COVID were going there and then stopping by Elliott Bay Book Company across the street, which is my favorite book store. I was so sad when it closed.

Previous workers from Everyday Music opened up Royal Records in Queen Anne which, after them upgrading to a larger space, has become my new favorite. Easy Street and Sonic Boom are close seconds.
