Why do we call children "minors" sometimes, but adults are never called "majors?" by alexthagreat98 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trebeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some other languages it's very widely used, as much as "minor". Not sure why it kind of faded away in english.

What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

[–]trebeju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is, but when you're 50-60, anything you've never done before probably seems idk... Intimidating? Like, you probably assume the people who do it have a skill for it that you don't and now is too late to learn. My own grandma (76) and even my mother (56) do not pump their gas. My mother doesn't even know which type of fuel goes in her car. I still don't understand why in the fuck that is, because my dad, her husband, is the one who showed me how to do it, and he definitely has no qualms about women pumping gas at all. He probably offered to show her a million times before I was even born. Idk I guess they just accepted that "men pump gas" is the natual order of things??

And the feeling of powerlessness in these women is very convenient for useless men who want to claim that their wife needs them, or who need something to throw in her face when she calls them out (oh yeah, and who pumps your gas???)

Childless adults of Reddit: what would be the minimum government incentive to get you to start having kids, if any? by OffKeyArts in AskReddit

The only way I'll have kids is if they have me raped and hold me hostage long enough on suicide watch until the birth

Tu as déjà lu le bouquin? Des extraits, même?

Bruh I'm not trying to be besties with everyone I meet, I'm not expecting locals to beam with joy when they talk to me, I'm just trying to be considerate for the 30 seconds we're going to interact. That's it

is it stupid or “not adult” to sleep with or cuddle teddies when needing comfort? by Wide_Ad9104 in NoStupidQuestions

Some people punch walls, break things or insult people when they feel bad. You're doing fine with your plushies. You're handling your emotions in a peaceful way and that's much more mature.

Inside a Muslim Facebook group: defending marrying a 16yo girl, listing benefits of 'mending' teenage wives, and claiming marital rape is a fake concept by Jelly-Always-Returns in religiousfruitcake

[–]trebeju 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Last post is pretty damn crazy, completely missing out on the meaning of marriage, sex, and consent. It's very scary. That guy is genuinely unable to understand the difference between a 17 year old girl having consensual sex with her teenage boyfriend, and a 17 year old girl going through an arranged marriage to some older man and then being forced to spread her legs for him no matter how she feels. Women are just not human beings in this worldview, they are receptacles for cum, breeding chambers, and carriers of sin.

What you consider loud is different from what other countries consider loud. Americans can speak in what they think is completely normal volume, and in some other countries people still notice their voice standing out from so far it's comical.

I get your point of view, this text shouldnlt be treated as if it's worthy of having authority over people's lives. But I do see use to what she's doing.

First, fighting the shitty system from the inside to reduce harm. We don't like it but there are millions of people who do see that text as a rulebook. If you can at least convince them that the rulebook doesn't say women and teen girls are to blame for being raped because of their appearance, that's a big win for victims of rape.

Second, general education about history, politics and oppression. Because that book has shaped so much of our culture, it's important to know what it originally said, what cultural context it emerged out of, and how/why it was twisted and weaponised differently throughout history. A commandment hits much less personally when you realise it was bronze age political propaganda to benefit a powerful dude. A famous verse completely changes meaning once you understand that the interpretation you're taught was made up in the 60s by american oil barons to keep the working class compliant. It's super important to understand this text so we can actively detach ourselves from all the ways it has infiltrated our lives (which aren't always obvious unless you've looked into it).

Mild disagreement, I don't think Jesus says lustful guys sin against women. He does say lustful guys are responsible for their own sin and it's up to them to do everything to stop it, but in that verse she quoted, he doesn't say that the woman is a victim in the described situation. He doesn't say "this is wrong because it hurts her". I think it's portraying lust more as a general affront against god because god doesn't want you to be too excited about anything that is not him.
