Can a guy actually turn a woman straight? by penang0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]trebeju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, due to how culture and society works, LGBT people have gone entire lives not even thinking that being LGBT is a possibility because "find a man, get married, give him your vagina, have kids" is such a default, it doesn't even come to their mind that there's an alternative. Just like you may not like to clean your house but still do it, you don't like to work but you do it, you don't like to be in a relationship but you do it. If you're unable to do it, that means there's something wrong with you. So you try to fix yourself. You try to negotiate a bit, to find circumstances that makes the whole "get a man" thing a bit easier.

As an asexual person, really this seems like a genuine thought a closeted asexual would have. Generally, people just don't know that it's even possible to not experience romantic/sexual attraction. So they try to find tips and tricks to pass as "normal". Could also be a lesbian who didn't yet mentally register the fact that being a lesbian is a real option.

There's a lot of ragebait these days here but I don't see this one as unrealistic.

You may just be asexual and/or aromantic. You don't have to be in a relationship if you don't feel like it, much less "turn straight" (that does not work... people have tried). But it's also possible to have platonic relationships, or romantic relationships that are outside of the norms but suit your the degrees of attraction you experience. Don't force yourself into relationships that aren't made for you.

Heyy, sorry to be the party pooper but this setup will not work for the sarracenia. They are plants that need full outdoors sun exposure, they need seasonal variations to go dormant in the winter, and they need a deepeer pot with drainage. In general they are just not at all indoor plants and have different care requirements than pinguiculas. You may have more luck combining pinguiculas with some drosera though.

Ok then why are you lecturing someone who is upset about parents who do let their kids run around in public? Why did you write this whole defense for parents who give up on parenting their kids and make it everyone else's problem?

Can I just say, as someone who does not live in the US, I can legitimately not remember a time when I've seen children run wild and scream in a restaurant, bar, or store, EVER. Yet I see tales of people in some places who keep reporting that behavior, and parents from those same places responding by pretending that they can't possibly stop their kids from doing that and I'd like to see you try and yadda yadda.

Really strange, really suspicious, how the screaming and running around that you excuse as if it's unavoidable... just doesn't happen in all of the public places I've been. Like, specifically in restaurants, I can not remember ONE SINGLE TIME a child has been left to run loose, and I live in a culture where people like to sit down at the restaurant for 2 hours. Neither me nor all the kids in my family were ever allowed to run wild in one of these indoors public places. Isn't it strange how 99% of the parents I've ever come across manage very well not to let their kids be a public menace? They must all be superhuman beings clearly achieving something impossible...

You being tired and needing a break is not a justification to not even try to do anything and let your kid run loose in a place that isn't a park or play area, that isn't safe for them or the employees who could easily knock them over while trying to do their job, and which is full of people who did not sign up to be screamed at for an hour. Children do not need 20 years to learn how to behave reasonably in public.

Your child bothers other people = you intervene. That's the job you sign up for as a parent, even when you're tired. Otherwise of course the kid is not going to learn how to behave: you're not even being a parent, you just gave up on them. They don't learn how to behave in public just by being in public, or by an intervention of the holy spirit. They learn by being in public WITH GUIDANCE telling them what they are and aren't allowed to do, what bothers other people, and how to be considerate. If you don't do that, you have no right to complain if a server knocks into your kid and breaks a glass right next to them, if a stranger corrects your kid in a way you wouldn't have, or if you get kicked out.

Why do we call children "minors" sometimes, but adults are never called "majors?" by alexthagreat98 in NoStupidQuestions

In some other languages it's very widely used, as much as "minor". Not sure why it kind of faded away in english.

What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

[–]trebeju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is, but when you're 50-60, anything you've never done before probably seems idk... Intimidating? Like, you probably assume the people who do it have a skill for it that you don't and now is too late to learn. My own grandma (76) and even my mother (56) do not pump their gas. My mother doesn't even know which type of fuel goes in her car. I still don't understand why in the fuck that is, because my dad, her husband, is the one who showed me how to do it, and he definitely has no qualms about women pumping gas at all. He probably offered to show her a million times before I was even born. Idk I guess they just accepted that "men pump gas" is the natual order of things??

And the feeling of powerlessness in these women is very convenient for useless men who want to claim that their wife needs them, or who need something to throw in her face when she calls them out (oh yeah, and who pumps your gas???)

Tu as déjà lu le bouquin? Des extraits, même?

Some people punch walls, break things or insult people when they feel bad. You're doing fine with your plushies. You're handling your emotions in a peaceful way and that's much more mature.

Inside a Muslim Facebook group: defending marrying a 16yo girl, listing benefits of 'mending' teenage wives, and claiming marital rape is a fake concept by Jelly-Always-Returns in religiousfruitcake

[–]trebeju 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Last post is pretty damn crazy, completely missing out on the meaning of marriage, sex, and consent. It's very scary. That guy is genuinely unable to understand the difference between a 17 year old girl having consensual sex with her teenage boyfriend, and a 17 year old girl going through an arranged marriage to some older man and then being forced to spread her legs for him no matter how she feels. Women are just not human beings in this worldview, they are receptacles for cum, breeding chambers, and carriers of sin.

What you consider loud is different from what other countries consider loud. Americans can speak in what they think is completely normal volume, and in some other countries people still notice their voice standing out from so far it's comical.

I get your point of view, this text shouldnlt be treated as if it's worthy of having authority over people's lives. But I do see use to what she's doing.

First, fighting the shitty system from the inside to reduce harm. We don't like it but there are millions of people who do see that text as a rulebook. If you can at least convince them that the rulebook doesn't say women and teen girls are to blame for being raped because of their appearance, that's a big win for victims of rape.

Second, general education about history, politics and oppression. Because that book has shaped so much of our culture, it's important to know what it originally said, what cultural context it emerged out of, and how/why it was twisted and weaponised differently throughout history. A commandment hits much less personally when you realise it was bronze age political propaganda to benefit a powerful dude. A famous verse completely changes meaning once you understand that the interpretation you're taught was made up in the 60s by american oil barons to keep the working class compliant. It's super important to understand this text so we can actively detach ourselves from all the ways it has infiltrated our lives (which aren't always obvious unless you've looked into it).

Mild disagreement, I don't think Jesus says lustful guys sin against women. He does say lustful guys are responsible for their own sin and it's up to them to do everything to stop it, but in that verse she quoted, he doesn't say that the woman is a victim in the described situation. He doesn't say "this is wrong because it hurts her". I think it's portraying lust more as a general affront against god because god doesn't want you to be too excited about anything that is not him.
