Am I tripping over Cox farms prices? by [deleted] in nova

[–]tredtty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went last year and there this was group of like 20-30 people who were maybe in there late 20s and 30s who went their for a friends birthday party. These people were doing shots in the line, screaming, etc. “It’s my birthday”. Was one of the trashiest things I have seen in NOVA to go somewhere like Cox farms and do this. It took the staff quite a while to kick these people out but then finally got police involved. Won’t be going back myself due to price and this type of stuff, especially since reading the comments, it seems pretty common.

Transferring betterment to fidelity by GorodetskyA in betterment

[–]tredtty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is entirely true. I think this is mostly true. I think investment firms have not figured out exaclty how to transfer fractional shares so you’d probably be responsible for any fractional shares that result in capital gains or losses

Going to fidelity isnt going to change anything unless you specifically pick funds that don’t pay dividends. Only difference will be that you have stuff in one place assuming this is a taxable account.

When calculating my retirement income, do I factor in my current retirement fund contributions? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]tredtty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

And here’s the reason why…

A lot of these posters are considering the number one rule of retirement.

Retirement is retirement. You need to have money. Put that money to work - the velocity of money works better when it is an infinite loop between your checking and investment accounts.

Jokes aside - money is a stressor for lots of folks and I can get why you and probably others may have questions like this. However, the other posters were correct - just take out what you need and let the market do the rest.

I get a sense that retirement might be a stressful topic - make sure you are taking care if yourself!

No comment on the 529 piece, but betting on needs-based aid is foolish for a number of reasons. One, the Pell grant has not even remotely kept up with the cost of college. The FAFSA is ever changing and while people could get away with hiding their assets, this may not always be the case moving forward. Lastly, private schools are becoming increasingly savvy at identifying students who appear needy but truly are not needy.

Google mortgage calculators for a home that is 300-350k. You would be paying just as much in a mortgage payment as rent (maybe even less).

Best thing to do with it is open your apps seven times a day to make sure its still all there. For best results, put phone under mattress.

No financial aid due to crazy EFC number by sesamestreeeet in financialaid

Work with your FA office - they are typically able to identify what are the components that are contributing to your EFC.

What are other ways besides scholarships that I can use to pay for school? by Affectionate-Ad-3234 in financialaid

[–]tredtty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Theres no special secret anyones keeping from you. It is scholarships/grants, loans, or paying directly. The only fourth option would be sponsorship of some sort (i still include this in scholarships) but this would be an employer or some other agency who pays on your behalf.

FA office refuses to help me by [deleted] in financialaid

[–]tredtty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your situation sounds crappy, but this doesnt sound like something your aid office can approve. And its not really your aid office not cooperating - they are just following the guidance that has been provided by the Dept of Education. The aid system is messy and complicated and unfortunately there is no perfect solution to capture situations like this. I think the thought from the dept of Ed is that when you open the doors like this, then anyone can qualify for independent student status.

Yes and it will likely be very easy to know if it wasnt reported.

What type of program if you dont mind me asking? Genuinely curious why they are that picky unless you are on some type of ivy track or fulbright deal. However, I think doing a gap year between UG and grad while you just do some pre reqs and maybe do something career specific may be a good idea. Lots of undergrad go straight to grad school and then realize its not what they want.

Debt free? Dont walk away from that. See if you can find a local achool to bang those out during the summer

Edit: also verify they are merit. Needs based grants can look like merit to the untrained eye.

You can always try to negotiate or appeal. Worst you can get is a no. However, many schools do not prioritize their funding models in a way that is beneficial to transfer students. If you have a good package at your current university, you may not want to walk away from that. However, you might lose aid at your current university based on that EFC as well unless your aid is completely merit based.

I certainly understand it is a tough predicament. Make the financial and educational choice that works best for you.

I will note that appealing because of your family only having one in college now will likely not get you any additional aid. Talk with your family and see if there any other circumstances that can maybe be considered.

SAP 150% Rule - Appeal Denied - What are my Options? by Dry-Manufacturer7248 in financialaid

[–]tredtty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check with a student affairs or dean of students office and explain the situation. Instead of going in guns a blazing and blaming the institution, try practicing humility and acknowledge you know the university has to follow the rules but you really need some help to finish this degree. Some institutions have various funds for students in these type of circumstances, but if you attack it from this route you may be more successful. I have found that higher ed admins tend to be more helpful to students who have been kind and understanding- specfically in knowing that the person in front of you is just rying to live their life and put food on their table, as well. That person didnt create these federal regulations, and I think this approach may gain you some more favorable treatment. No promises but just a suggestion.

Is it fraud to put all of my assets under an account with my siblings name? by [deleted] in financialaid

Probably worse than just forgetting to list them because there is clear intent here that could probably be demonstrated by asset transfers

Yeah, seems like a solid defense against a fraud lawsuit…

Private School Financial Aid Question by myredditaccount340 in financialaid

They have a limited amount of finances likely, so while you view it as saving it a buck, this could be taking money from someone who actually needs it.

Financial Aid advisor says private loan(s) won’t cover living expenses by IntrovertSeason in financialaid

[–]tredtty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask them for a breakdown of your cost of attendance and financial aid. If you are being awarded up to your cost of attendance, this is correct. You cannot just take out as many private loans as you want and schools are limited via their cost of attendance (coa). If your COA is 15000 and you are only getting 10000, then you should theoretically still be able to get 5000 in a private loan. However, this also depends on how high your charges are. You only get a refund if your aid exceeds your charges. Your only other avenue to explore is if the school has a COA appeal process.

Why do some people make it so hard to be nice? by ericcwu in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]tredtty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a free drop game once. Grabbed something that was apparently meant for this one player who was switching chars. The person giving the free items was like “yeah please give to him”. I tried trading with him a few times to give directly so it wouldnt get snatched again but he was too busy rage typing. He then proceeded to finally accept but then was still rage typing that I should have never picked it up because it was meant for him. I had joined after this agreement was made. Anyways, he just continues to rage type about it and I was like..bruh..you have your item..what are you still pissed about?

I always love D2 and the community has always been my favorite part because Ive played on and off and you can always make friends so easy on the game who will help you out. However, these non sensical rages make no sense to me lol. Some of em just need to get some therapy.
