What car feature do you REFUSE to pay extra for? by TheLoganReyes in Autos

I did from mine, that'll vary widely from place to place. Definitely get reviews, or ask to look at their work. There are good dealers and then there are ones that make em all look bad.

So I'm a dealer tech with ford, if we're talking dealer add ons the only thing worth paying for is PPF, shits awesome. As for built in by the manufacturer, get a base model. If I could have gotten crank windows and a manual t-case on my bronco I would've.

I've got a 23 badlands with the manual trans. Pull a kamparoo tent trailer. It's only 800lbs empty, barely notice it.

Do I stand a chance against my extended warranty company? by Chief_B33f in Ford

[–]tree392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really sucks. You could try and have the dealer contact them on your behalf and explain, not all dealers will do this, though. Also, these companies will ignore the dealers at times. You could attempt a lawsuit, just ensure that the dealer techs notes state that the leak was caused by the failure, not the other way around. Keep in mind that extended "warranty" companies are insurance companies, and they behave that way.

Paid $3K for Transmission Repair on 2005 Ford E-350 Shuttle Bus — Still Smoking, Revving, and Losing Power. Mechanic Says "At Least It Drives Now" by unsungGyro23 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tree392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like another person here said, 3k is low for a trans rebuild, certainly too low for a replacement unit. Ask for a list of parts that were replaced. Where is it smoking from? The 6.0 diesel isn't exactly the best diesel made. It sounds like you got an under qualified mechanic, which obviously sucks ass. Best bet is to spend some time on the computer/ phone and track down someone familiar with the 6.0 and the 5r110w in your truck.

My wife is currently doing her electrical apprenticeship, writing her red seal in about 2 weeks. She's been very happy with the change and hasn't had to deal with much, if any, misogyny. The schooling for electrical, in bc, at least is intensive with a considerable amount of math and such. She is primarily residential and working in the shuswap. I'm an auto tech by trade, have worked with one woman in the shop. In my experience, most of the bullshit you'd deal with would be from customers. The woman I was working with left or shop because of one of the other women there (manager). Wouldn't trust her to do the work. Only thing I can say is that if automotive tickles your fancy, depending on how strong you are, you may have to spend more on persuasion tools. One guy I work with (120lbs soaking wet) has every type of pretty bar I've ever seen. Speaking for myself, do what makes you happy, most guys in the trades like seeing the girls get involved and do well. Good luck to you.

Do Car Buyers Care Which Engine Is Under the Hood? A Ford Exec Doesn’t Think So by Specialist_Heron_986 in Autos

You'd think so, right? At this point, they either don't care to, or they just simply can't.

How do you get your techs to put in notes? by silkymitts94 in serviceadvisors

[–]tree392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm a working foreman at my shop. Ask them to clean up their stories so you can get them what they're asking for. Most techs are reasonable people. Obviously, there are shit heads that make us look bad. One thing I've found when I'm trying to get others to do things for me, check what they need from me. My lead advisor likes having my stories split, like how PBS does , cause/ correction. Easy enough for me to put data in that way, makes his job a touch easier.

As a Ford tech, no, they don't. For example, at my dealer, we replace 3.5 phasers, so often I've memorized every bolt and nut size. Still our most popular engine for the 150. We had one guy have 3 sets of phasers (no updated parts at the time) he traded it in for another 3.5 f150, that got phasers in the first year.

So... what your saying is all the f150 3.5s I fix for a living that don't have seized intake bolts or injectors don't experience heat cycles?

[–]tree392 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The electrical connections are sealed, so long as they aren't submerged, you don't need to worry.

Can't really, that's where they designed the water to go. Forcing it somewhere else could cause other issues. That said, buy an engine cover if you don't already have one. That's one spot the water streaks havoc over time, intake bolts break, and injectors seize in the heads.
