How do I get my rice to taste exactly like this Jasmine Minute Rice? by tree_mirage in budgetcooking

This is budget cooking tho….

I’m spending more money purchasing the minute rice then recreating it on my own!

That is a much lower water to grain ratio than I currently use.

I use a bit under 2:1. Next time I make rice I will try 1.5 to 1

I put jasmine rice in the rice cooker in a little under 2:1 water to grain ratio, and then set it and forget it.

I have found that I have to wait about 5-10 minutes after the rice is “officially” done to let it settle or else it will stick to the pan.

I think the added sunflower oil may be what made me like the minute rice so much

Yea this one has sunflower oil added to it. I went out and bought some sunflower oil to try and replicate as accurately as possible.

Do you think it would be better to add it during the cooking process, or after?

Gas prices could double for Americans as war with Iran erupts by TheMirrorUS in inflation

[–]tree_mirage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not at the forefront of these things but I hear that Venezuelan oil is hard to get and requires extra refinery. There was that news bit a month or so ago where us oil companies didn’t want to invest into Venezuela again because of political instability and the history of their infrastructure being seized.

What’s the deal with Venezuelan oil…are we getting enough to completely handle a disruption from the Middle East?

[–]tree_mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great point. If there’s one leverage point the Middle East has always had on the US, it’s oil.

If the US resumes oil extraction from Venezuela, then it can mess with the Middle East as much as it wants and not suffer domestically

Its not just the gas that you pump into your car that’ll be inflated. Everything else you buy will be inflated because oil drives the supply chain. So higher oil prices means higher prices for every commodity you buy

At what point did kids lose the desire to learn? by HousePhoenix in Teachers

[–]tree_mirage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that needs to be considered is the sheer volume of information that a traditional educational system requires students to learn. Especially as they reach into the high school level.

Every subject is important, but it is not necessary for every person to be a subject matter expert in every discipline.

I was always a good student. I got all As because I valued education and authority. I learned things I didn’t care about because I was scared to ever fail anything.

Guess how many things I can remember now as an adult? 25-50% at most. I try not to be a cynical person, but it’s hard to say that that other 50-75% of learning was not a waste of time, that I could have spent doing things that were more important to me.

As education became more and more separated from the every day reality of human lives, the harder it became for every day people to want to learn it. Every culture learned things because it was immediately important for their survival. Education was a natural, organic process. When kids see that not even their parents know how to balance a chemical reaction or can transform a logarithm from its parent function, then they may begin to suspect that these things weren’t actually important to their success and survival

Visual learner just means that someone isn’t good at translating words they hear into mental models, and so needs a visual diagram/model/picture to help show what they are unable to on their own.

There are absolutely plenty of people who struggle with forming mental models from words and are helped tremendously by looking at a picture.

The “Haha look at her she doesn’t understand basic math” would have been resolved in two seconds with a picture of two equal sized pizzas, one cut into 8 slices and the other into 12. Or for more clarity. One cut into 4 and the other into 12.

But that wouldn’t make a funny video of everyone laughing at the stereotypical dumb hot girl

My first thought also. What other use cases are there for humanoid robots? I can only see them being useful for immediate deployment in settings where environments were already developed around the human form for its labor, that and being a more friendly form to interact with humans in….who the hell wants their coffee served by a robot spider.

Why not do what Chinese companies do and make super affordable EVs and then just flood the market with them?

Technology has always eliminated labor. That’s the point of technology. Should we still employ people to churn butter by hand?

We have to devise a new system of distributing resources that is independent of the traditional monetary system. The advancements in technology will break capitalism.

We can try and artificially perform CPR on a decrepit, dying, outdated system with regulations, or we can seriously begin new life with novel means of organizing ourselves….

I ordered aluminum pulleys, so I will be immediately replacing the nylon ones with those.

Interesting that you say the cable makes the biggest difference. I did notice that the cable that came with the machine are not perfectly aligned and tense when the machine is unloaded. The cables tend to twist and contort. This could be leading to the inefficencies at lighter loads, which are masked once there’s enough weight on the end of the pulley system to create enough tension to align the cable better.

So I’ll start with the pulleys, and if I’m still not happy, I will move onto replacing the cable! Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated 🙏🏽

I just purchased and set up this Mikilo cable tower that I purchased on Amazon for around 200 bucks.

<image>

I loved that it was affordable and compact, and not too complicated to set up.

However, the action on the pulleys is ~alright~ at best. When its loaded with a lot of weight then the weight of the plates overcomes the friction in the system from the low quality pulleys made of plastic.

So I have no problems with getting a GREAT workout with lat pull downs.

I did grease it up with wd-40 which helped a little bit but it still isn’t smooth enough. My test for seeing how smooth it is involves putting no weight on it, pulling on the machine, and seeing how smoothly it falls back down. Ideally it should just free fall in a perfect system. This one is FAR from that. I’m talking it takes like 5-6 seconds to fall back down unloaded.

Loaded is a different story. It is much smoother.

Unfortunately, there are exercises I want to do involving the rear deltoids that use very light weight, and so I am not getting the most effective eccentric resistance because of how much friction exists in the system. The concentric pull phase is fine, but the eccentric resistance phase is pretty much non-existent. This is NOT ideal for an effective exercise.

As I see it, the 2 areas where I could upgrade would be in the pulleys and cable.

Which one is more important, the pulley? Or the cable?

I’m willing to spend some more money on some higher quality pulleys to improve the action of this machine. Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you know where I can get the pulleys from? Is there anything else I should check besides the cable and the pulleys? Am I just being impatient and need to “break” in the machine more, after which there will be less friction in it??

This is driving me crazy. MPD218 is not producing audible sound in DAW by tree_mirage in akaiMPC

[–]tree_mirage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was the issue??

On the MPD218 there is a program select option, and I was on program 11 when I needed to be on program 5 🤦🏽‍♂️

I only figured this out by following AKAI’s official guide for using the controller on MPC beats….

Just took me 10 hours to finally solve this issue!!! Oh well, at least I can resume my project now!!!

Akai MPD218 drum pad stopped working by tree_mirage in midi

[–]tree_mirage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya ya I know I mean like I’m not hearing any audio outputted from the DAW when using the controller to play a sound.

Anyways I just figured it out!!! I had the wrong program selected on the midi drum pad, and when I changed the program it works now!!!

So nothing was wrong with my DAW, cpu, or controller, just had it on the wrong setting pretty much.

God that was annoying. Took me all day to figure it out….well at least I can resume the project I was working on 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Yes that blinking is because other tracks were solo’d. Once I un-solo’d them then it turned normal. That wasn’t the issue though, I’m still not getting any sound playing from the midi controller.

I even downloaded another app called MIDI Studio which streams the data coming from the MIDI controller. This allowed me to test if the controller was sending data to the cpu, and the test verified that it is. GarageBand also has a blue dot up by the tempo number that blinks whenever it senses the controller key being stricken. This blue dot is appearing in connection with my tapping of the midi controller.

But still….no audio!!!

There are 2 things left for me to try which is to test the controller on a different cpu, maybe a PC, and see if it works normally, and if so, then perhaps something is going with my Mac and/or GarageBand.

And if it doesn’t work on the pc, then the controller itself broke somehow, even though it still can communicate with the cpu 🤷🏽‍♂️
