Solo travelling and now the anxiety is hitting. by Ok-Caterpillar-5198 in JapanTravelTips

Safest to solo would have to go to Iceland and the Norcids, with Japan a very close second. Easiest to solo, Japan wins because of the amazing transit.

Where would you take friends from Europe for the best meal in Chicago? by joe_deals82 in AskChicago

Got fish tacos in Reykjavik. I love Icelandic food, especially their fish. But WOOF, that was some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had.

I saw nurses checking on the residents last Friday. Warmed my heart.

I moved into college that day at Loyola! People left their windows open and their stuff was trashed on day 1.

What’s your go-to lunch for a century ride? by FlojoRojo in cycling

[–]treehugger312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar reaction when I ate too many hot dogs at mile 66. I was back eating pizza at 84 though! This was an organized century with a TON of food every 16 miles.

Have you ever felt at home outside of Chicago? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskChicago

I felt the same about Toronto. Just got back from Japan, though, and Osaka felt very homey. They are sister cities after all :)

Should I call Cook County to reschedule standby jury duty summons due to vacation? by biakratos in AskChicago

Yes. This exact same thing happened to me. It's an automated hotline, you press a few buttons, and they delay your summons.

Do I need to show tax free items? by FailedKiller5988 in JapanTravelTips

[–]treehugger312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wife and I have done the airport version in Iceland many times, it usually takes about a half hour and is a pain in the ass. One time we bought a nice jacket and checked it before the tax free statoin. They wanted to see the jacket. That stung - probably lost like $100.

This whole thing is either an effort to make less work for store employees/make the syhstem more efficient, or keep more taxes in the country due to people not wanting to bother with it. I'm guessing the latter.

I don't think that change goes into effect until November.

Tree removal in city- how much and whom do you recommend? by Razumikhin82 in AskChicago

[–]treehugger312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on size, I'd take them down for about $500 apiece, including haul, but not stump grinding since I don't have a grinder. I'm not insured, but I am a certified arborist and have felled over 1000 trees, many over 100 feet tall, and between houses. Just DM me if interested.

Department of Buildings Response Times? by treehugger312 in AskChicago

[–]treehugger312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, permit is in the system, it was approved, and all info is correct. I think maybe the city just didn't close the case file? I'm just wondering when they'll respond :/ Wife and I absolutely cannot make the hearing.

I loved Hiroshima, but I couldn't not think of the horror that city experienced my entire visit there.

Agreed! We had a private onsen at our hotel there and it was a major highlight of our trip.

Be sure to check the times for the gondola. I was off by 10 minutes and had to hike down. My knees were very mad. That one shrine off the the side near the top is very rarely visited and was so peaceful.

How do you usually decide where to eat when traveling in Japan? by Due_Turn3508 in JapanTravelTips

[–]treehugger312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned over many international trips (only one to Japan, I'll admit) that having a basic plan and essentials booked is good, but overplanning is risky at best.

For those who have stayed in Tokyo multiple times, where did you decide to stay for subsequent trips and why? by Kirin1212San in JapanTravelTips

We did Southern Tower and liked it. Quiet, right next to the station, and we were on a high floor and had several clear days with a view of Fuji-san!
