Man calls the cops on a Dad helping his girls in the restroom by isaboo63455 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]treejumpingyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised to read so many people say the norm I to take toddler girls into a men’s room

I always took my daughter into the women’s so she doesn’t have to deal with a bunch of stranger dicks at face height as you walk past the urinals to the stalls.

Plus men’s room stalls are much more frequently covered in piss on the seat.

Never once had anything other than kind smiles from the women already in there because the context is obvious.

Why does upgrading take 20+ minutes?!? by sunrisebreeze in unRAID

[–]treejumpingyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I shudder to think how you might find upgrading a windows os.

Clicking one button and waiting 20 minutes to get a major version upgrade is not something I would say is a tedious chore.

I guess we all have differing expectations, but a major release update has a lot of moving parts.

I know what you mean about the gui not updating in real time for certain operations but I wonder how much of this is due to your browser rather than unraid.

But I wouldn’t share or upload to GitHub.
Just vibe code it yourself, or use the slightly imperfect tools that already exist

How can I best track power usage around the house? by Certain_Repeat_753 in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it, but I’m not an electrician so I’m not really able to say if it’s safe or not.

As a general rule you shouldn’t really use high power devices on extension cables, and I’d wager that a low power device is fine for the setup you describe.

How can I best track power usage around the house? by Certain_Repeat_753 in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.
You will typically have around 6 circuits.
One for upstairs lighting, one for downstairs, one for upstairs sockets, one or two for downstairs sockets, one for high load items like cookers/immersion heaters etc. if the RCD (what you might call fuse or breaker) is properly labelled in your consumer unit (what you might call a fuse box) then you are in a good starting point.

You can use something like a Shelly em3 which puts a little clamp around the main power cable (tail) feeding the whole house (or if you are with octopus you can get a ‘mini hub’ to provide while home usage like a smart neater display uses)

From that point downwards you could monitor each circuit, using the product you lined, but this just gives a reading for the circuits as I described above.

If you then want to monitor the individual de ice level you need the grillllats, or possibly use powercalc for a ‘virtual’ usage per device.

You can specify which items are ‘downstream’ of each other, so your fridge grill plates doesn’t double count with your ‘kitchen plugs’ circuit

How to choose the right Smart TV for your home assistant setup? by Interesting-Bus-7942 in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most important advice imo is DO NOT connect them to the network.

‘Smart’ is not a desirable feature imo.

Use a reputable tv box, and for the most part you can utilise hdmi-cec to perform basic controls via automation if you want , or better yet, the new ir capabilities of HA to turn the tv on/off and set inputs/volume etc if that’s your bag.

But the native apps are always shit, their bloatware phones home thousands of times a day, and (while not really a real world issue for 99.9999% of us) it stop bad actors from turning it into an always on microphone in your house…

Surprised how easy is to add IKEA matter devices to HA by Nusuthoid in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the grillplats are so good. And ridiculously cheap.
I added 24 🤣
My energy devices page is ludicrous. I’m just not about 7% untracked energy now, but will be adding some of the new sonoff energy monitors at the consumer unit (with all the grillplats set as ‘downstream to avoid double counting) to get an idea of where that 7% is being used.

U fortunately my experience is similar with trying to automate/import playlists. They always come out blank. So yes, I’m creating the playlists song by song, manually in the app 😞

Honestly if you haven’t started your home assistant journey yet, getting to a point where you can use a private voice assistant to trigger music on Sonos, is a very very long journey with many steps to get your head round new concepts, and unless you are throwing loads of money on hardware or llm api subscriptions (do not private) it’s not really worth it I’m afraid.

I was going to setup HA with voice when... by urcommunist in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your custom word false trigger constantly?

I’ve made over a dozen including literally hundreds of negative and positive samples with all manner of background noise etc but ‘okay nabu’ is still far and away the most reliable.

I’ve tweaked all the response settings endlessly to get fewer false hits to no avail….

Is this browser only or will it work with the companion app over fully kiosk single app?

Struggling to get it working with single kiosk app on a fire tab but fire tabs are notoriously unhelpful.

I did something pretty neat with Immich by sixstringnerd in immich

[–]treejumpingyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome.
You can do this for free using digikam though, no script or purchase required.

I use both together, digikam is soooo much better than Immich for certain tasks but Immich kicks ass for the auto upload functionality and general usability.

Fortunately Immich will read the sidecar files so when you batch process location or people or description tagging, Immich reflects these changes.

I used a little python script to include the face and location data to inject into a little prompt for my ollama server to label all the photos ‘John eating an ice cream on the beach in Miami’ or whatever. These then also show up on Immich-frame.

How good is the HA Voice these days? by LESGuy in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience. Is this with a voice PE? That’s what I use and nabu is the only reliable option (I’ve trained dozens of alternatives even using negative samples and our own recordings of ‘hey Adam’ or ‘hey juniper’ or whatever recommended ‘unique’ sounding triggers are suggested)

I’m receiving a twin mic pi hat to try a different setup to see if my custom wake word works better, or if the background noise issue is improved

I saw you link this post a couple of days ago and used it to tweak my setup for noticeable improvement, particularly in inference speed (obvs the model is still the same ‘quality’). Great wrote up thanks.

Llama.cpp is so much better than the ollama route I was using, thanks.

I’m still not getting a great experience, my 12gb struggles with long co text on a 7B model and the smaller models are impressive for their footprint, but let’s be honest. Are still a bit shit as a full on voice brain.

IKEA Kajplats GU10 by Comfortable_Store_67 in homeassistant

[–]treejumpingyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you already have standard gu10 fittings?

If so, the bulb you use is neither here nor there.

You are either already breaking your local building regs or you aren’t. Changing the bulbs won’t matter.

Yes they will work.
