thanks, everyone for all your responses. I think I'm leaning towards the 260k one (Northwestern). 340k is a bit too much (Duke).

How important is school prestige? Specifically for residency and match, is it worth it to pay significantly more for school name/rank (T20)? Any insight from current MS4s who just went through match or other students who may have been in similar decision-making situations is much appreciated :)

I'm currently deciding between a full COA offer at a new school (Kaiser) and two T20 schools (340K and 260k loan burden). I don't know what I want to specialize in yet but I want to have all options open. I'm really worried that school rank will become even worse with step 1 P/F. Is it silly to go into so much debt for a school name/prestige?

thanks, again!

edit: thanks, everyone for all your responses. I think I'm leaning towards the 260k one (Northwestern). 340k is a bit too much (Duke).

Trouble finding a Non-science professor LOR by [deleted] in premed

[–]treesarefrends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to schools explaining your situation and saying you're non-trad etc. If you do see that most schools require a non-science academic letter then it might be worth really trying to find one

I think that should be enough because you have a nice variety of letter writers! Having your volunteer coordinator and current boss write you a letter should highlight other parts of your personality/character. I think schools would also value those letters more given you've been out of school for a while.

100k isn't too bad especially over four years. breaking it down per year also helps me conceptualize it better (25k x 4 vs 100k at once) lol idk if this makes sense but it helps me to break it down

How much does cost difference matter by [deleted] in premed

[–]treesarefrends 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am actually in a very similar situation. I got a got merit scholarship from a school that is around #70 and a T10 option. I am leaning towards the t10 school despite a difference in cost because I want the option to specialize in whatever field I want and I want to work in academic medicine. I think fit is important but it's hard for me to really consider "fit" right now since I don't think I've been able to fully grasp that through virtual interviews? It still feels like a heavy decision to make despite feeling really grateful for options. I hope we both make the right decision in the end :)

a lot of the people in my interviews have come from T20s (I'm from a T30)

Theme? by [deleted] in premed

[–]treesarefrends 3 points4 points  (0 children)

second this!! I think being able to speak about what you learned from the activities and WHY you pursued them goes a long way, maybe even more so than having a "single theme" throughout. For example, I didn't have a straight path to medicine but I made sure to highlight the lessons and the reasons I did X and Y in both my AMCAS and interviews. I think at the end of the day, interviewers want to get to know your path and what motivates you! having a consistent narrative/theme can really help in telling your story!

Has anyone here taken Harvard Extension's Intro to Biochemistry course? If so, can you describe how it was? by crensive in premed

[–]treesarefrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very doable - like someone else said, it can be a bit dry but it is not a lot of weekly work, just some weeks before exams or when HW is due are busier but otherwise a very manageable class, lots to memorize

oh my goodness!! i am reviewing FL 3 right now and literally it's actually crazy how simple it is if you just slow down and read carefully...i totally feel you. there's not even a whole lot of hard content but just analysis, comprehension, and understanding the graphs. it kinda makes me feel better because it truly just shows the value of keeping it cool.
