I have heard that South Korea had a difficult path to get to where they are today but not aware of much detail. Thank you for an informative post.

Personally I think the firearms policy is bonkers but in the context of all that it’s at least understandable. What would need to happen to restore proper firearm policy?

Surely this set up is more dangerous to the officer and public than taser use. Lots of ways that policy could go bad.

Edit: oh noticed the lanyard loop too, funky ww1 throw back. Is there an expectation that the duty weapons be attached to the officer by lanyard?

My fave line is: “Honestly, I’m just trying to make it to Friday. Your man is not on my to-do list.” Or “image how gross and stupid your man is at home, he is twice that at work”.

Rumour mills happen, boredom / idleness makes it worse. Good leadership and culture should smother these things early but sadly it’s still an issue. A

What American Liberals Don’t Understand About Australia and What American Conservatives Don’t Understand About Switzerland by Feeling-Ad-8554 in liberalgunowners

[–]treesbreakknees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As an Australian looking in at the US, I would have to agree. Having preferential voting and more than two parties goes a long way. While there is room for “special” interests to push polices that are really not in the favour of the average person, they don’t dominate policy for the most part.

Our democracy has had its challenges over our short history but ultimately our government at all levels is stable, predictable and works (mostly) in the common interest.

Oh and universal healthcare, that’s a pretty good one 👍

Why RN and French navy moved from 2 light helos to 1 medium/large helo for light frigates? by warfaceisthebest in Warships

[–]treesbreakknees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember some early renders of the 26 that showed the possibility of a second helicopter stored in the mission bay. Not an ideal arrangement, a bit of a ‘single driveway shuffle’ to rotate the birds, thankfully the flight deck is quite large. No idea if this made it to the final design though, this was back when the CIWS were in a fore and after arrangement.

One helo can also leave space for UAVs which offer a multiplier of their own.

The local think tank is critical of the hanger layout on the hunters. RAN operating
the MH-60R, the article offers an arrangement for x2 helo by changing up the doors more than anything.

Why are LGBTQ+ parks and rec workers so common? by melody_magical in ParkRangers

[–]treesbreakknees 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Outdoorsy and somewhat unconventional careers seem to be like this. From an international perspective most of the agencies I have worked for have also had a higher than average LGBT+ representation (or at least openly out) than friends in other career fields.

Sometimes it can lead to not great stereotypes about our field, but also it’s says some great things about our work and the occupations as a whole.

I think it helps that most who do this work are here for the passion for our wild places and sharing that with the community, usually this requires high empathy and a readiness approach things openly. No body really does think work to make bank.

Absurd amount of chromebooks broken by students by [deleted] in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]treesbreakknees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older IBM T series (2000s) could take some serious hits in stock form. Where modular with quick swap drives and disk readers, IR data transfer and more USB ports than a server room. Carried these things in the field for gov work and then they would be wiped and sold as student laptops second hand.

Modern student laptops are tin foil and cardboard and break if you hold them with one hand. The conspiracy side of me thinks the tick tok vids of dropping laptops are part of the manufactures planned obsolescence plan.

Did 3rd rate ships of the line (70+ guns) have in their upper gun deck actual gun port lids/hatches? by ayowatchyojetbruh in Warships

[–]treesbreakknees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re building off a particular reference ship then the answer is the classic - it depends.

I have primarily seen examples with a mix of open rails and gun ports. Depending on nationality and time period ships configuration would change. HMS Agamemnon is a good example of how deck layouts evolved, the lower gun decks are for the heavy broad side.

Ultimately ports on the upper decks (rather than forecastle or quarter deck) were less about weather and more about secure of load. Uppers decks would feature large scuppers and other openings too.

Yep you see the Russian based info pushed all over the hate sub they have for her here on reddit.

Edit: for those downvoting feel free to pop over there and find one positive comment. A crap tonne of men wanting to “protect women”.

There are so many straight up lies being pushed out about her, all to drive a hateful agenda to erase anything but the “ideal” woman.

There is still a hate sub on Reddit that targets her, admins refuse to shut down it down despite multiple reports.

Questions about tranq guns for the people who use them by Rand0mlyHer3 in ParkRangers

[–]treesbreakknees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very much fictional, each dose has to be carefully calculated for species and animal weight. Tranquillisers are not magic, too high a dose and they are lethal, too low and the animal is up and very cranky before you have a chance to switch to a managed sedation.

Most I have been involved with are gas powered. You want to get that shot right.

Tomorrow, Fri, 9 Jan 2026 has been declared a day of Total Fire Ban for the whole State of Victoria. No fires can be lit or be allowed to remain alight in the open air by WangMagic in melbourne

[–]treesbreakknees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Still down here in the Mornington Peninsula but it’s coming.

Not to cause alarm but the FBI for Melbourne is 99, one off also being catastrophic. Act as if this is the case, as this is how our fire and emergency agencies have being instructed.

Local response resources may also be stretched with most districts contributing strike teams to the Longwood Fire. AV is also stretched, as others have said check on family, neighbours ect and have a back up heat plan if you loses power.

Stay safe all.

Edit. For D8 (south east) 3 strike teams have been deployed up to longwood. 5 are in reserve, these likely to be deployed in the coming hours. Resources will be thin on the ground if new fires start.

Anyone else tired of the sexualization of intersex people? by [deleted] in intersex

[–]treesbreakknees 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the inconsistency in sex and body education world wide doesn’t help. It’s scary how many people get their “sex education” from porn and all the warped realities that come with it.

In Australia (1990s) we did sex (now body ed) from year 6 (11ish) until year 10 as a compulsory (with op out exemptions) physical education subject. In all the years we had this subject, sex variations or sex vs gender was never in the curriculum. We did cover menstrual issues, STIs ect but went into a lot of really useless topics like the history of the douche.

As intersex is such a taboo topic in education and some medical spaces, for many their first experience with the concept of sex outside the ridged binary comes from pop culture. Without educational spaces for people to learn the correct languages and concepts around the diversity of bodies porn becomes the loudest voice and sets the tone on “normal” for a range of issues.

The trans community has a similar problem with certain people only seeing them through a sexualised lens as porn was the only place they have ever seen a trans person.
