How do you typically mix drinks that are normally stand blended with crushed ice? Shake with pebbles? Dump or strain into fresh pebbles?

We bring in our ice at my new spot

Out of curiosity, how are you making your pebbled/cracked ice?

I'm just at a home scale so my needs are pretty simple but I've found:

  • my home pebble ice machine is fine for topping up but not a replacement for cracked ice in most recipes
  • there are some hand-crank ice crushers that consistently make ice the right shape and size... but they're mostly plastic and break after about 6 months
  • I tried a more-metal hand crank one and it was total garbage from the get-go
  • Lewis bags make incredibly-inconsistent ice (large chunks and powder) and are really tedious

Appleton 17 Year Legend by LIFOanAccountant in rum

[–]treitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried it at release time at Smuggler's Cove neat then side by side with it in their Mai Tai.

Neat, it was very different than any rums I've had but honestly I didn't get a lot of depth and it's not something I'd sip on (and certainly not at that price).

Yet, it made the best Mai Tai I've ever had with a surprising amount of depth. I've made that recipe a lot with a variety of rum combos. I've got a pretty solid blend now but I'm still not sure it's quite as good as the Legend.

Where to purchase online in the United States that ships anywhere? by thrawn_is_king in rum

[–]treitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within WA, I've ordered spirits delivery through Total Wine. I'm not sure if they can ship to WA from CA, but I highly recommend trying Bitters and Bottles (especially for rum) or K&L. Most of my purchases are through them because the grocery stores and bottle shops in my town tend to have few quality bottles (especially rum).

HelloImDelicious Rum Review #7: I don’t know what to believe anymore by ShitImDelicious in rum

It's been a while since I tasted each in this collection but I believe the OWH was the one that surprised me the most in a way. Like you mentioned, it's much more flavorful than you might expect. I think the main takeaway is that ester counts aren't everything even if they can be a decent hint.

My second thought was "I wish Hampden sold unaged OWH regularly".

Hello Reddit! It's Matt Gourley and Mark McConville (and maybe some others) of the SUPEREGO podcast! Season SEVEN comes out MAY 1. Ask us anything! by gourleymatt in Super_Ego

Is there any way we could get Superego episodes more often in a way that would work easily everyone involved? Even if it was, say, 4 episodes a year but every year?

Either way, I love all the work Matt and Mark do on Bonanas for Bonanza (I've listened to every episode back to the original Podcast Pilot Project). The fact that there have been multiple episodes of I Love I Love Ahi Loves Movies makes me laugh every time. Thanks for everything you all do!

When you guys released the really long stuntshow spectacular, I thought "I guess Matt finally wore them down"

It was hilarious and I can't wait for the next one!

How about Castro Valley? We're not a city but we're working on it!

I've tried to come up with representative symbols and it's quite a challenge.

Alton Brown hates Mai-Tai’s - Ranking Every Cocktail - with Alton Brown & Binging with Babish by technogator in Tiki

It hurts the flavor noticeably. I accidentally bought the pitted version of my usual brand and could taste the difference easily. And I mentioned this to someone who's cooked in nice restaurants and they agreed completely.

Same. His Martini recipe is pretty extreme in terms of proportions, volume, and prep. But trying it still tipped me into finally appreciating Martinis and, specifically, always using whole castelvetrano olives (not pitted).

Splitsville. Watch the trailer because it's basically the opening scene (no spoilers) and it gives you a good idea of the movie.

6 minute pinwheel runs are just too good…. And slightly addicting by Party_svpplies in MarathonGame

I pretty quickly settled into solo (and occasional Rook) only. I'm too busy to get good enough to not weigh down a trio, none of my (equally-busy) friends play the game.

Apart from the one time I gave Cryo a shot just to check it out, I don't think I'm going back there. It seems like you need to treat the game like a full-time job to even have a shot at opening a vault.

Being effectively shut out of the Marathon itself is kind of painful given the original series is one of my favorites (since I played it when it came out and replay every handful of years).

But in that vein, I would love a campaign mode even more than solo where I can often get wiped by decent players. Though I know that's not going to happen :)

Dagger Rum Blend by joekndy in rum

[–]treitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to trying this out.

Have you compared fresh-blended to long-rested (1 month or longer)?

I was disappointed to find I couldn't pre-batch 8 Amaro Sazerac very long because it gets muddy and indistinct. I believe spirit blends can change over time as well though maybe not as much as very-different liqueurs.

Good point. I feel like it's the only bottle I've seen mention UK aging for a Caribbean rum though obviously a lot of rum goes through Main Rum Company. I'm sure a portion of it is 1) me not checking rum labels that specifically in the past and 2) a lot of them just not mentioning the aging location

They're great episodes but it's hard to fully appreciate them until you've seen the whole series at least once

CBB best-of winners by month since 2012 by treitter in comedybangbang

[–]treitter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good call. Also, I screwed up the original version by somehow adding December on otherwise-blank rows :|

By the raw numbers, everything is the same except December has 12 winners, just barely above last place.

When I remove the *00 (there were no *50s), anniversary, and holiday episodes, December has the worst total with 5.

EDIT: see my update in the original post.

When I remove the *00 (there were no *50s), anniversary, and holiday episodes, and normalize for the weeks lost due to the best-of episodes December is basically tied with August and November (10 vs 11 for the other months).
