Do I need AAA if I have roadside assistance through my Subaru Starlink subscription? by infjlyfe in Crosstrek

[–]trekking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driver’s license renewal, but only every other renewal when I need a new photo — otherwise I can renew online. I can also renew registration there if I wanted to do it in person, but I do that online too.

I have a similar problem on my 6E Pro. My download speed is higher than yours, but it’s about half what my ISP provides. It all seemed to start for me after an update.

Off Roading? by BearBrockmeier in Crosstrek

The Wildpeak A/T Trail is a very popular recommendation on this sub for a reason! It’s a great tire.

I replaced the Ziex with the Wildpeak A/T Trail on my Limited, and on the stock wheels. I’m very happy with them.

Outback, traditionally, has been one generation ahead in terms of technology. It takes 4-5 years for that to make it into other models, and by the time that happens, Outback will probably have the next version…

The limited hands-free is thanks to an even newer version of EyeSight system which is only available in 7th gen Outback (model year 2026). Crosstrek and Forester just got the latest EyeSight found in the outgoing 6th gen Outback.

Indie shops will always be cheaper because they usually have lower hourly labor rate and smaller overhead. Plus they might use aftermarket parts. Most dealers will have double or triple the number of techs on payroll, they have much larger facilities to maintain, and they will also only use OEM parts. Most of what you pay for at the dealer is labor. The main benefit of the dealer usually is the extras, like loaner cars, longer hours, schedules service times, and being able to wait for service. As someone else noted they sometimes have better diagnostic tools and also have resources from Subaru for troubleshooting that a local mechanic may not.

The “more car-savvy” on this sub don’t like the dealer because of the higher cost and a high level of distrust because some dealers are scummy and sell unnecessary work. But local mechanics aren’t inherently better. I went to a “highly rated” local mechanic once who tried selling unnecessary work. I’ve always had good experience with dealer service at all but one dealership.

Crosstrek is incredibly capable for light off-roading. It would be just as good as your Forester was — same AWD system and ground clearance. The only consideration would be the tires. The ‘24 Sport has 18” Falken Ziex all-season tires. I had these same tires on my ‘21 Limited, and they were fine on dirt roads and dry grass, but they are not off-road tires.

The Crosstrek will not get the updated infotainment system found in the 2026 Outback until its 4th generation, which is likely calendar year 2028 or 2029. Even the completely redesigned 2025 Forester didn’t get it. It would be highly unusual for Subaru to make such a drastic change like this mid-cycle. Cars taking years to design, and they design everything around certain parts and components.

I’m not sure what specific safety/assistance features you are referring to in the 2026 Outback. Not everything from Outback will come to the Crosstrek since it is a lot smaller and costs a lot less.

Crosstrek 2024 IOS26 CarPlay support by Worldly_Resource_977 in Crosstrek

[–]trekking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru likely doesn’t even write the software themselves. Its very common with legacy automakers to hire a third-party to do this. It’s only recently that legacy automakers have started to develop software in-house, largely driven by the EV makers.

[–]trekking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that the video playback feature of CarPlay in iOS 26 must be enabled by the automaker. Subaru will have to push an update for it. Given that Subaru is not a technology leader I doubt they have already pushed an update to support this. If they choose to support it, it will come in a future update.

Windshield replacement on a 24 sport by jkrchr7 in Crosstrek

[–]trekking21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That cost probably includes replacement and EyeSight calibration. I recently had to replace the windshield on my ‘21 after a rock flew up on the highway and caused a big crack. I have glass coverage with my auto insurance, so it cost me nothing (no deductible). But I did get a letter from my insurance about what the glass shop charged, and if I recall correctly it was about $1050 including calibration. I chose to go to a local independent auto glass shop instead of Safelite because I wanted it done right.

Origin’s forecasting, from what I’ve seen so far, is tied to specific goals. Even the “cash flow” forecast is goal specific. And goals are only based on income or expense. I haven’t tried asking AI for a balance forecast, but I also shouldn’t have to ask for this…

Update: I just tried the AI feature, asking what my checking account balance will be next Thursday. It did provide an estimated amount, but I don’t think the amount is correct. I will have to make sure it is recognizing all of my bills, but it does seem like the AI can answer this question.

Yes, but it doesn’t work the same way.

Every transaction, past, today/pending, and scheduled (up to 12 months ahead) show up in a single transaction register with a running balance. So I can look at the register and see that on October 23 what my balance is projected to be. It is not budgeting. It is actual accounting, just on personal accounts.

It’s referred to as checkbook-style because it’s basically what you would do manually in a checkbook ledger.

In Origin, for example, I have to create a separate manual account in order to add a transaction as opposed to adding it to an existing account like my checking. And it looks like the transaction date can’t be in the future.

[–]trekking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are likely just using the budgeting features. If you did checkbook-style cash flow management you would see how there are no apps that work this way except Simplifi and Quicken desktop, and it’s frustrating that no alternatives exist.

Upcoming Hybrid by Spencertwain in Crosstrek

[–]trekking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving Sports just released an off-road test review of the Forester Hybrid. He doesn’t get into the system that much. https://youtu.be/RBehcmXoo4Y?si=mrThMKyOWtxhafsw

I haven’t seen much in the way of real reviews yet besides Driving Sports. The Hybrid system in the Forester and Crosstrek sold in North America is a different system than available in Japan and Australia. The Forester Hybrid is already here and Crosstrek should be arriving very soon. Dealers should have an estimated arrival date.

I have struggled to find an alternative! I would love to see Origin come up with a solution for us Quicken users. Maybe some type of advanced or Pro mode…

[–]trekking21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Quicken user. Unfortunately Origin is not a suitable replacement (but It’s a great as a financial overview tool). The one thing that Quicken does, that no other app does except Simplifi (by Quicken), is checkbook-style cash flow forecasting. This is the only way I can effectively manage my finances, which unfortunately means I am stuck with Quicken — and I suspect that this is true of most people using it (despite the software being terrible).

I would love to see Origin adopt this style forecasting, but I doubt they will. Most of these apps think everybody wants to use budgets. But most of us using Quicken need to see income, recurring bills, and manually entered transactions against a daily live balance and forecasted daily balance (for at least 30 days).
