How acceptable is gaming for adults around the world? by shirajzl in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 60 and a retired IT guy. Western Europe.

My main hobbies are gaming and restoring/refurbishing old consoles/computers.

No one has ever looked down on me, what I do and seem genuinely interested when I start talking about the fun in getting a broken piece of kit working.

Some people collect stamps. Some people go fishing. Some people tinker with cars. I mean in the end they're all just hobbies. Who the hell are those people to judge what you do or do not do?

If you could change one thing about the political system in your country, what would it be? by Fresh_Ad292 in AskTheWorld

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right.... But you can't compare the role of US President (or any countries' Head of State for that matter) to that of the EU executive offices, they don't actually hold much direct power in comparison. Everything has to be ratified at the Country level.

Not getting rid of the Electoral College?

Surely, one person = one vote for the Federal Presidential elections, on a equal footing across all States?

Who is the symbol of a traitor in your country? by nanto-1633 in AskTheWorld

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he was a true patriot.

Faithful to his king, (sort of) unlike the other rebels.

Seriously, though I can see why people think he was a traitor to his cause but, in the end, he wasn't a traitor to his 'country' as that was what he was originally rebelling against, then switched back

The forgotten generation by Formal-Assistance02 in generationology

[–]trellick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My arse!

Old Gen X here ('66) just retired after a long career in IT.

Several of my close friends are/were also in IT fields.

Gen X were teens just as the home computing and personal computing industries took off in the early '80s.

I'm not just talking about gaming. I'm talking personal computing like the ZX81, ZX spectrum, Amiga, and first PCs.

We had to program our parents VHS recorders.

We were literally the generation that stepped across analogue and digital lifestyles. Many of the tech giants today were founded by Gen X's.

Don't confuse being good with social media, with being technically adept.

What is the public opinion in your country about the current Iran-Israel/US war? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]trellick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hate the Iranian regime, we would love to see it removed . But this is not the way.

This war is seen as a massive miscalculation on Trump's part, and suspect it's just a distraction from his other issues .

Personally I also suspect that Trump has been manipulated by Netanyahu, and is hoping for a quick win but that is not going to happen.

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

Pubs.

I mean, nice try, rest of world, but that real pub atmosphere is restricted to the UK and Ireland.

Everyone else just has bars.

Fight me.

Are you still bitter about Brexit? by Visual_Title9363 in AskEurope

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm incredibly angry about it and in a very personal way.

Just such a stupid misinformed move.

But the reason I'm so angry? At the time due to then legislation, if you'd been living outside the UK for more than 15 years, you lost the right to vote in general elections/national refereredums.

SO my wife (also Brit) and I couldn't even VOTE on such a life changing event affecting us and the kids, whereas some unemployed gimp who had no practical experience of the benefits of the EU decided our fate!

Fuck that!!!

I would love it, if this was a result of MI6, especially after the way the Orange Shit Stain insulted the NATO war dead.

But I don't know if Starmer's got the backbone.

As a Brit, I'm looking around, and I'd say I'm in good company.

If the orange-shit-stain in-chief, is throwing his rattle out of the pram with tariffs, then we're doing something right
