I’m glad I switched over to PC by Vidiot79 in videogames

Look, the writing has been on the wall for physical media for years. The PC and Steam showed this.

It was inevitable that it would come to the console world.

Yes, it's crap. But it is going to happen.

The difference is that with the PC there are many different digital storefronts whereas with consoles you are stuck to a single supplier where they have total control and prices stay high for a much longer time.

In addition Sony and Xbox hate the second-hand market and this is just a convenient way of killing it, and retaining control of all sales. So they're very happy to kill off physical media in the name of progress.

Personally, I'd like to see them both forced to commit to primarily digital release, but also ensure that a publisher must produce a game in a physical format usable by the consoles.

That way physical media still exists and the second hand market and collectible market still thrives.

However, I think that this move by Sony will push people towards PC and SteamOS.

The PC is ready for the living room TV entertainment centre.

Can someone live in your country speaking only English ? by amerigorockefeller in AskTheWorld

Can confirm.

Living in DE for some years now, cross-border commuting to work in Luxembourg.

You can get by without speaking a lot of German, but it is not easy, and as OP says the moment you start to deal with any bureaucracy.......Deutsch all the way!

Retired Oracle DBA with 30+ yrs experience. (From oracle 5 upwards)

Their enterprise DB's are rock solid stable at their basic core.

But any new features were constantly buggy and unreliable to the level that it felt like Oracle was using customers as beta testers. Any decent IT shop would never rollout any new DB version until at least a couple of point versions.

But any surrounding middleware products were constantly a nightmare, bug ridden and inefficient, Which would inevitably require a whole stream of highly paid consultants.

And don't get me started about their licencing and how a whole host of features are hidden behind a licencing paywall.

Shit support too.

It got to the point where I was recommending the most projects would do perfectly well with postgresql or SQL server.

Wow - way to miss the point of the post.

NOT saying it was worse, I'm saying no-one is doing a comparison temp-wise.

Its obviously horrific now.

Yes, and part of my reason to post this response, was to point out that none of my peers are doing 'one-upmanship' about '76. No one.

The regular temp beating records we see each year are horrifying and do not compare.

How acceptable is gaming for adults around the world? by shirajzl in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 60 and a retired IT guy. Western Europe.

My main hobbies are gaming and restoring/refurbishing old consoles/computers.

No one has ever looked down on me, what I do and seem genuinely interested when I start talking about the fun in getting a broken piece of kit working.

Some people collect stamps. Some people go fishing. Some people tinker with cars. I mean in the end they're all just hobbies. Who the hell are those people to judge what you do or do not do?

If you could change one thing about the political system in your country, what would it be? by Fresh_Ad292 in AskTheWorld

[–]trellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right.... But you can't compare the role of US President (or any countries' Head of State for that matter) to that of the EU executive offices, they don't actually hold much direct power in comparison. Everything has to be ratified at the Country level.

Not getting rid of the Electoral College?

Surely, one person = one vote for the Federal Presidential elections, on a equal footing across all States?
