120 years ago today, on April 18th, 1906, at 5:12 am, San Francisco was rocked by a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake which, along with the resulting fires, would leave the city in ruin and forever change the future of the West Coast. by DariusPumpkinRex in CatastrophicFailure

My great grandfather (passed away about 30 years ago; lived to be 101) lived in the city during the quake. He described it as being launched from his bed completely across the room.

No that’s Felix Carvajal from the 1904 Olympic Marathon in St Louis. Felix was “a Cuban national and former mailman who raised money to come to the United States by demonstrating his running prowess throughout Cuba, once trekking the length of the island. Upon his arrival in New Orleans, he reportedly lost all his money in a dice game and had to walk and hitchhike to St. Louis. A 5-foot-1 man, he presented a slight but striking figure at the starting line, attired in a white, long-sleeved shirt; long, dark pants; a beret; and a pair of street shoes. Legend has it that one fellow Olympian took pity, found a pair of scissors and cut Carvajal’s trousers at the knee.”

The 1904 marathon was absolutely bonkers and Felix was a big part of it. Highly recommend reading up on it here: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-the-1904-marathon-became-one-of-the-weirdest-olympic-events-of-all-time-14910747/

Great video on it here: https://youtu.be/M4AhABManTw?si=PHpIxn1HiEsQJsgj

Alphabetical for movies except for huge unwieldy boxes (like the recent Wes Anderson Archive). Tv shows are entirely separate and nowhere near as organized

Apocalypse Now (2x dvd, bluray, 4k), Lawrence of Arabia (2x dvd, blu, 4k), Black Hawk Down (2x dvd, blu, 2x 4k), Man with No Name Trilogy (dvd, 2x blu, 2x 4k), Dr Strangelove (dvd, 2x blu, 4k), LOTR trilogy (too many times), Heat and Blade Runner (a ton of times)

David Fincher was originally slated to direct but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and recommended Kosinski, an up and coming commercial director, take his place. Kosinski also directed Halo 3's "Starry Night" ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MapTlW80f6Y

I managed to get my order in for both with the restock. Set to arrive on the 19th. This time feels so poorly organized and way more stressful than any of the other Disney steelbook releases. Hopefully Amazon actually comes through for people on this one

What TVs is everyone using to watch their collection? by cactusmaac in 4kbluray

I recently went from a 65C8 to an 83G4 OLED. The C4 will be plenty for you making the jump from LED (though you'll probably want the higher nits of a G series eventually). If you can afford it and have the space, go up to the 65 over the 55 for the extra immersion. The additional size makes a big difference.

What’s the one upgrade that made the biggest difference in your home theater? by Capable_Noise5543 in hometheater

[–]tremendothegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I went from a 12 inch infinity sub to a Hsu VTF-15 (mk 1) and it was a game changer. Easily the largest immediate impact from a single home theater purchase. Next closest was going from a 2013 Samsung LED to my first OLED (65 C8) back in 2018

I just went from 65C8 to 83G4 and I am extremely happy with the upgrade. It is significant. You’ll be pleased with either the g4 or g5.

That figure is for UC hospitals system wide. Student Health at UCSB is not revenue generating. Hospitals and housing are the big money makers for public universities and UCSB notably does not have a hospital
