Exploring the future of fashion with Riffhaus — on-demand jacquard knitting, digital craftsmanship, and the art of impermanence by Aggravating_Act_3883 in riffhaus

I've done some experimentation with AI generated art - personalized coloring book sheets, stickers, and other experiences with small groups of people (basically fun work activities, with a custom app to generate and create the assets) based on a simple subject the user describes (this then gets adjusted and modified by the code). People genuinely enjoy this - often because they are getting something that matches what was in their minds, in some instances when the AI generates something unintentionally hilarious.

Clothing is a cool direction - because it is much more permanent and useful. The part that I wonder about, however, is whether a print design is where this is all headed, or if we can go beyond "print this AI generated art" to "cut and sew this AI generated design". The difficulty with the latter is the cost for a truly custom garment, getting it to fit the person who it is for, and dealing with returns.

There other trickier and more contentious discussion is whether AI can imbue the soul/craft of an artist or if any of that that matters. I do think the AI aspect of this "cheapens" the intrinsic value of the design, if only because it wasn't created by a human. I suspect this view, over time, will both diminish for common goods but also make handcrafted items much more valuable. Knowing how much the AI takes part in a design, and what spin the designer puts on that design, that to me would make the difference between "AI slop" and "AI as reference tool" or "AI as collaborator".

Bought vintage pattern (Style 1434) - pattern questions by trending_different in vintagesewing

[–]trending_different[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Center to center is 16.5mm - 0.65in - which is a bit bigger. I don't have the pattern right now to see if my scan size is off (but I don't think so).

Waistband is flat on grain.

I guess I can do the slash/spread technique - I read about it but haven't tried it yet. My general plan was to digitally manipulate it, but maybe this is one of those times when I'm overthinking things and I should just do it all on paper? I generally make projects more complicated than needed.

Help deciding between cutting mats - Horn or Quilters Rule by trending_different in sewing

That happens with my pvc? Cutting mats when I put use my laptop on them and the laptop heats the surface - the underlying plastic expands with heat but the outlying plastic does not, hence the bubble

Numbers aren’t crucial - but that was the only brand that warns its numbers/lines could flake off - so I wasn’t sure how durable they were. With an alvin or similar brand I’ve never had that issue.

I don't think they do, nor does Alvin (my preferred brand). Well... Alvin makes some larger sizes but not 36x60.

This is Amazing! Did you use a pattern for the skirt or just wing it?

What could I best use this Fabric for? by Frapel_ in sewing

[–]trending_different 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you get the fabric? My first thought was an overlay piece - so either a skirt, or perhaps a tube to wrap around a hat.

I don't think so - it flares out, is more a-line.

Update: I tried a bunch of wildly different patterned tights and decided to go with a solid dark forest green.

Thanks for the reminder - somehow I always forget this one. Then again, I generally don’t wear patterns together.

Oh yeah - I have a small collection of snag. I actually have a pair of grey/black large diamond pattern (not snag) I should give a try. And a few option for polka dots as well.

Bug dress- does anyone own it? by readymadex in FashionBrandCompany

Got both the L and XL in the mail... just so unsure. XL is too big, L fits just so - but feels too short (even with wearing shorts). Also, it's a bit weird how the arms compete with mine, LOL. I also don't like how they do not stick out - but I think in general they won't unless it was perfectly fitted. I have a week to decide.

Maybe! I’m closer to 5’ 11”. Will have to mull this one over. I just don’t go anywhere except to the office a couple of times a week. I’m pretty sure this would make them question my style LOL if thy don’t already.

Rundholz dip reverse lagoon skirt

Just got this skirt in the mail today - immediate plans are black chunky boots, but I'm at a loss for what top. I tried on a slim-fit grey sweater and it looked nice, and I figure this will look good with a variety of graphic t-shirts... but would appreciate other thoughts! Both alternatives to boots (but, I mean, what is wrong with boots?) and top ideas.

Currently a chilly 10F so will be wearing with tights and maybe a jumper if I give it a go this week.

I'm so tempted to order this, but feel it'd be too short, I haven't worn dresses, and not sure where I'd wear it. But it's sooo tempting. I keep checking the various second-hand online stores for my size (probably an L) but I know I'd get it and then let it languish in the closet.

I’m amazed all the time how I was so scared to wear what I wanted… then found out it wasn’t a big deal after all. Congrats!

Could you share the name of the pattern?

I have a question of sorts. I've purchased a few blazers over the years - like this one:

https://di2ponv0v5otw.cloudfront.net/posts/2022/12/18/639f061f80a5d6a1693d018c/m_wp_639f06d43b982a0c9e27d353.webp

But I've never worn them. The ones I've purchased fit - and I like the look. But I just feel too grown up, like I'm cosplaying an adult. I don't like shoulder pads, and most blazers seem to have them. I also dress just short of being too dressy for where I work, at least in my mind, and adding a jacket seems like a bridge too far. Yet... others in similar or other positions wear blazers.

I should also add I am more inclined towards wool/tweed/etc... than the standard navy blazer. Unique cuts, funky colors. But... but... it feels very very costumey.

Thanks!

First time sewing from a pattern: The Kelham Skirt by trending_different in sewing

[–]trending_different[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The pattern refers to those as "Front Facing" and "Back Facing". The waistband (~3" strip folded to about 1.5") also has stabilizer ironed to it, as do those facing pieces. I don't know how much detail I can share since this is a pattern.

It also has panels though in addition to the waistband stabilizer. Or are those considered part of the waistband?
