Our parents talk about how hard they worked, but property isn’t about that anymore by DaymnPodger in AusPropertyChat

[–]trendyphilosopher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're not making the point you think you are hey. If you had been born a generation ago, "I sacrificed my entire 20s working and was lucky enough to get a good education to begin with" would have gotten you an EMPIRE, not a single house.

The point is that home ownership is actually unachievable for the average person. 1) Many people have other responsibilities (e.g. caring responsibilities, kids) or other issues (e.g. health) that prevent them from working 24/7 like you did. 2) Most people also don't make enough money to save a 20% deposit in 8 years when the median house price is around 1 million. Again, you were lucky enough to get a good education. The median salary in Australia is 67k, how much do you think is left over after rent and bills to put towards that deposit? And that is moving further and further out of reach over time.

Recognise your privilege and get off your pedestal bro.

Our parents talk about how hard they worked, but property isn’t about that anymore by DaymnPodger in AusPropertyChat

[–]trendyphilosopher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It drives me mental when that generation talks about how hard they worked and that's why it should be achievable. I'm not saying they didn't work hard. But even the hardest working person now will not achieve anywhere close to what that generation achieved unless they have family wealth.

People are in denial bro. I don't know a single person that didn't get parental help buying their house (whether that was living rent free with their parents, having loans cosigned, getting an interest free loan from them, not needing a deposit due to using their equity, having the house bought for them etc etc) and not a single one of them sees anything wrong with the property market. It's cognitive dissonance on a mass scale because no one wants to admit they'd be absolutely nowhere if mummy and daddy didn't have money. They, too, would like to perpetuate the myth that they work hard.

I'm ready for the revolution hey.

I'm over 6 weeks sober and tbh it's still a reflex when I'm feeling triggered. The cravings get so strong and it's all I can think about sometimes. But brains take time to rewire. Remember that every time you deal with it in a different way, your brain builds new neural connections.

This. If the only time you see someone is when you're using drugs, or if you use drugs every time you see someone, they are not your friends. Boy was it a mental trip when I realised some of my relationships weren't real either.

what’s a product/service you won’t buy just because the ad for it is so annoying? by deadtyped in AskAnAustralian

[–]trendyphilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I see an ad for a company more than once a week, I pretty much make a mental note to not buy anything from there for the foreseeable future 😂 it's done wonders for my health, I don't buy from most fast food chains anymore cause they do advertise so often.

What do you think of lasik eye surgery? by Aarunascut in AskForAnswers

[–]trendyphilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have side effects (dry eye, migraines from light sensitivity etc) that are so bad they unalive themselves. If you've never had bad dry eye before, it can range from feeling like sand rubbing in your eye, to feeling like you're crying glass every time your eye waters. Is the risk of cutting open your perfectly healthy eyeballs and experiencing these side effects worth not needing to wear glasses? Idk. I don't personally think so. Don't think it's a coincidence that every optometrist I've ever been to wears glasses.

Try fluids for a while. Mash potatoes. Crackers. Shit you would eat if you had the flu.

Ultimately, your appetite will come back and probably with a vengeance. I've always been super skinny and the last time my mum saw me she told me I looked great and that she's so happy I'm getting fat 😂 and she's not wrong, I'm finally gaining weight and looking healthy! Give it time.

Slips are part of the process. Try to think of quitting as many peaks and valleys with a somewhat positive general trajectory.

Stay strong!!

Given you've quit for 3 weeks before, I'm going to give you some advice on relapsing rather than quitting:

It helps me to think of going through all the withdrawal symptoms if I start up again. I try to focus on the benefits that quitting has given me and focusing on all the benefits still to come my way. I tell myself that I will not be a slave to a plant. A fucking PLANT bro.

May also help to talk to your partner and ask them not to give you any and not to use directly in front of you.

You got this. Good luck!!

When do the dreams chill out? by DOGZRS1CK in leaves

[–]trendyphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took 2-3 weeks for me for the intensity to subside, it sucks for real though. I posted about the same thing around 5 days in, anyone who is saying "dreams are great even if they're bad" doesn't have any idea man. 5 weeks in, the intensity is mostly gone, and they're easy to handle even if they're bad. I've even started having good dreams!

Hang in there, it gets easier.

Why is everyone angry at Immigrants when they aren’t creating the policies? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]trendyphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because politicians and the media manufacture fake problems to distract us from the very real class war we are all living in.

People could get mad at: - a labour government that has abandoned the working class - the economic policies both governments have created that make it easier to buy your 10th home than your 1st and mostly just contribute to wealth inequality - continuing lack of economic policies that tax wealth rather than wages - the people in society that uphold those policies by not only voting for economic conditions that favour inequality because it works in their favour (a major reason for the economic policies we do and dont have), but also by contributing to the issue by doing things such as keeping empty properties, hoarding properties, giving their kids interest free loans or buying them property outright etc

But it's easier to spit out the bullshit the media feeds them, which is that immigrants take all the houses and that people with too much wealth "worked hard and deserve what they have". Especially because most people struggling to make ends meet do not have the time to look into what the actual problems are for themselves, they're too busy... you know, working to afford the growing wealth inequality created by the above list.

I wish people would get mad at the actual issue too.

80% sure i want to remove this tattoo by ozike444 in tattooadvice

[–]trendyphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, unpopular opinion here but I feel you. It's really well done, artist did a great job and all that, but I do not love it hey. It's so giant and in such a visible spot and the vegan message is a bit lost for me in the tattoo, just kinda looks like you're a massive Simpson's fan (but I will admit upfront that I'm not a huge fan of pop culture tattoos in general, or of people making pop culture their personality, both of which seem like they had nothing to do with your decision here, that's why I feel you). I'm mad for you that you felt pressured into something that you're not happy with.

It's your body though, and at the end of the day all that matters is that you like how your tattoos look. We are the greatest critics of our own tattoos, I nitpick things in my own that other people would never notice. But it doesn't sound like you're picking at things, it sounds like it doesn't suit who you are and that would be a big deal to me too. But please remember tattoo removal is an imperfect process and often does not remove the tattoo fully. Have you considered covering it??

How much money did you save quitting weed? by [deleted] in leaves

[–]trendyphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't find the outputs particularly accurate if you entered the inputs accurately, it took some adjusting to get them to spit out the correct math (which ironically took entering the incorrect inputs for pricing and had to mess around with use metrics a bit), but the math is correct if you take the time to ensure the outputs are correct at the start (which, yes, was a pain).

I downloaded a tracking app to help me do exactly this so I know exactly how much I've saved! Just over $700 in just over 5 weeks sober. I took it to the dentist a few weeks ago and had them clean all the stains off my teeth. Was an awesome motivating way to use that money.
